Do you help them?

We don't live close enough and they have refused help in the past. It's not just us who feel this way - my sibling in-laws also feel the same and again help is refused.

MIL - fine, sometimes needs dusting but ok. Full of crap old furniture and tat in cabinets, but not a health hazard.
FIL - a hoarder like one of those tv programmes. I would never eat, drink or sit down there. I've not been for years so no idea what it's like now.

My parents - pristine, cosy, lovely furniture, well decorated, well stocked fridge. I'd like to live there!

Not pleasant at all. But MIL is disabled and FIL does his best. We always put all our clothes in the wash the minute we get home and all have a bath or shower as the smell sticks to everything.

Do you help them?

Never stay at MILs but her little flat is spotless (only her there and not many visitors)

When our dc bring their partners home I definitely go the extra mile with the cleaning, I'm paranoid they'll think our house is a dump 😂

KevinDeBrioche · 12/09/2024 17:08

it's awful. I try to avoid going as much as possible.

curious79 · 12/09/2024 17:07

tidy and clean, as is my father’s. Wouldn’t stay in a filthy / unclean house

WhatFlavourIsIt · 12/09/2024 17:07

I don't stay with my mil but her house is very clean because she has an awesome cleaner. Me!

Aparecium · 12/09/2024 17:07

ILs: pristine. MIL is so houseproud that it distresses us to spot cobwebs in corners. We wish she had a cleaner. She does too, but FIL insists they don't need one, he can help. MIL doesn't want his 'help'.

My parents: has always been cluttered but clean. They are very old and frail, and now have a wonderful cleaner. But you can see when dm has done the dishes, because they are not properly clean any more. And I'm not sure they notice that the house is getting decrepit. Distresses us, but not, I think, them.

MIL's - spotless. Not even a speck of dust anywhere.

FIL's - you couldn't pay me to stay there, I don't even visit. It's cluttered, filthy, stinks of cigarettes and everything has a sticky coating of what I presume is nicotine over it. Last time I was there the downstairs toilet had no loo roll, no hand soap and the towel in there was absolutely gopping.

LocalHobo · 12/09/2024 17:03

I go to see my MIL, not to check her cleaning standards. So can't say I've noticed.

Toomanysquishmallows · 12/09/2024 17:03

Mil,s flat is absolutely spotless , I’m the one whose embarrassed when she visits me .

Changeyourfuckingcar · 12/09/2024 17:01

Both my mums and my in laws homes are as clean as they usually are, regardless of whether we’re visiting or staying or whatever. I suppose my in laws is probably cleaner if I was being picky but it’s just the two of them snd they have no pets/live in a village whereas my mum still has a couple of my siblings at home, plus loads of grandkids who visit often, several dogs, a cat, lives on a farm… you get the picture. It’s clean and tidy still but more ‘lived in’ I guess.

mucky123 · 12/09/2024 16:58

Pristine, very luxurious. Plus she cooks really well and he serves good wine so its win win.

Tagyoureit · 12/09/2024 16:46

I wouldn't stay at my ILs house, thankfully they don't have the room for us!

It's cluttered, smells of damp in the bathroom, furniture is on the way out. They moved in to this flat as a temporary thing donkeys years ago so have never done anything with it.
The tv broke so they just put the new tv in front of the old one.

They are lovely but I wouldn't stay there.

Spotless. But they're retired and have a cleaner. Our house isn't 🤣
