I go to see my MIL, not to check her cleaning standards. So can't say I've noticed.

Quite

Smartiepants79 · 12/09/2024 19:37

Very.
MIL doesn’t like clutter and is very houseproud. It’s very neat and tidy and clean. And welcoming. They’re good people.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 12/09/2024 19:35

Well, they blame the cat for bringing in the mice and rats, but that doesn't account for the hedgehog or the empty bottles of Sanatogen.
But I'm not quite sure... 🤔

dontforgetme · 12/09/2024 19:33

We don't sleepover at my IL's because there isn't room but when we visit it's spotless. They are fab hosts too.

ShamblesRock · 12/09/2024 19:29

Are you asking me or my husband? 😬

I think my husband finds visiting easier now we don't stop overnight (since COVID we've stopped out, though the eldest DD does usually stop)

It's just very busy and cluttered, and can feel slightly overpowering.

My ILs house is absolutely filthy. Talking mouldy fridge, dirty sinks and I’m convinced they do not change sheets for us when we stay. It turns my stomach frankly. I take a sleeping bag these days. Both musty and dusty.

All my friends say similar to those on this thread - their ILs house is spotless.

Im a neat freak. Parents were too busy to clean when I was growing up. Just bloody over being around messy people!

Edited

My ILs house was similar, the toilet had a second skin from lack of cleaning, plates were covered in pet hairs and cups had old crusted biscuit stuck to the rims despite apparently being 'clean'. Sheets could probably have walked into the machine themselves.

When their hoover broke DH took his round and offered to vacuum, they fell out with him over that. When SIL tried to clean the toilet when she was staying for a visit my MIL stood over her complaining the whole time.

I know shortly before MIL passed away that a couple of the neighbours were judging DH and his siblings for 'letting their mother live in that state' but if someone is happy to live that way, it's not exactly easy to change things.

What do you mean by filthy?

I mean sticky floors and worktops. Carpet never hoovered. Mould toothpaste and limescale covering the sink. Toilet never cleaned. That sort of filthy.

Why do you ask ? My Mums and MIL homes were like many homes . Some days untidy and other days spotless…not sure why it interests anyone.

PILs house is always spotless, everything scrubbed and bleached clean to the point the kitchen/dining room could double as an operating theatre in a pinch! I've never seen a speck of dust or a cobweb there in seven years, it's quite amazing.

It's definitely preferable to my DMs house which (like the house I grew up in) is chaotic and genuinely filthy as she smokes inside... the total opposite!

Debtandmoredebt · 12/09/2024 18:44

My MIL house is filthy. Actually disgusting.

We do love her but we never eat or stay there long!

Portfun24 · 12/09/2024 18:23

ALL my inlaws houses are absolutely show home spotless, every single member of DH family are very house proud from cousins, aunts, siblings, nieces and parents. Never met a whole family who are so house proud/tidy.

Eldarrr · 12/09/2024 18:21

They don't have space for us to stay and most likely wouldn't be keen, but their house is very messy and dirty.
The oldest is early 50s, no health or mobility issues, they just don't seem bothered. Examples are mould and grime all over the bathroom, carpets stained, oven filthy, garden barely maintained and full of junk.
Luckily they aren't really bothered about seeing us so it's not often we go there!

PfishFood · 12/09/2024 18:16

When MIL was alive it would be spotless. Now it's just FIL it's clean, but not MIL standard clean! It's fine though.

My own parents' house is not spotless, but quite frankly I'd rather my parents enjoy their lives rather than spending their lives cleaning to perfection.

My DM has two rules:

  • if you move it, but it back on the same dust free spot; and
  • if it bothers you, I'll pass you a duster

I have a cleaner, yet my house is probably dirtier than both my FIL's and DP's houses as I have too much clutter and not enough time or willpower to make it better.

I do make sure the spare room and bathrooms are clean before someone comes to stay, but if you spot a cobweb, either remove it yourself or keep quiet! (Unless you're my DPs or FIL, in which case, point it out and take the piss).

BarbaraHoward · 12/09/2024 18:03

What a weird question. What's special about ILs' houses?

Ophy83 · 12/09/2024 18:00

Spotless. Retired midwife!

BobbyBiscuits · 12/09/2024 17:59

By my standards, show home level of clean. Intimidatingly so. Like it's never ever been even remotely dusty or dirty for even a second. Like nobody lives there?! Very nerve wracking for me who grew up in an old dusty home with a fair amount of clutter. Nothing was 'new' or pale coloured.
I always thought I'd spill something on their huge pristine cream couches and carpet! Thankfully I never did. It is quite relaxing on the surface being somewhere that clean, but you just feel like you can't quite fully switch off.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 12/09/2024 17:51

Well my FIL has been married 3 times, so I'm on my third MIL.

  • Late MIL (DH's Mum): Gorgeous apartment, bit cluttered, but clean, comfy and super welcoming.
  • Ex-Step-MIL: House so filthy I refuse to take my toddler to visit. Squirrels living in the roof, leaky toilet, no working showers, dodgy kitchen tap.
  • Current-step-MIL + FIL: Grey crushed velvet interior design monstrosity, but it is very clean.
Pleaselettheholidayend · 12/09/2024 17:50

MIL house is always clean and tidy but in a pleasant 'lived in' way. She sometimes gets on my nerves but I've always liked that she isn't overly tidy and neurotic about house stuff, makes me feel more relaxed!

Xiaoxiong · 12/09/2024 17:47

MIL's house is clean but dusty and a tiny bit cluttered in a nice lived-in way. Our house is far worse!

My parents live like monks, and basically only wipe down the kitchen counters, chuck bleach down the loo occasionally and change bed linen. Not sure when the floors were last mopped and I don't think the fridge has ever been cleaned but all they keep in it is eggs, olives and champagne so it doesn't really get that dirty.

SmellyNelliey · 12/09/2024 17:41

Fil house is very clean but stinks of smoke and that alone is enough to put anybody off wanted to visit let alone stay the night.
Grandparent in laws...is spotless both her daughters & us hoover everytime we visit and dust around ect the house is always ready for visitors.
My mum's house is spotless and very homely and smells lovely, and I wouldn't no about my dad's house as I've not been for about 4 years.

TwinklyAmberOrca · 12/09/2024 17:41

My parents house is spotless.

My inlaws house isn't my idea of clean. The bathroom is really grubby. Hairy carpets. The kitchen worktops are at least wiped down and the kitchen appears to be clean! We lived with them for a while and the bathroom was so disgusting I refused to bath my DS in the bath and instead we spent HOURS scrubbing it whilst pretending to bath him!

rightoguvnor · 12/09/2024 17:27

It's only spotless because we arranged a cleaner when MIL's eyesight started failing (well she is nearly 90) and she couldn't really see when things needed doing.
That poor cleaner, all those toby jugs and 'best grandma ever' ornaments and little china dogs and VHS tapes (yes).

FrenchandSaunders · 12/09/2024 17:25

Mil was always very house proud, to the point I’d stress when she came over to ours. She gradually deteriorated and it was sad to see her lovely home musty and dusty. Refused to get a cleaner and would get offended if we started doing it. Lovely lady, there’s a big gap in our family now she’s passed away

AnnaMagnani · 12/09/2024 17:22

Spotless but with a general air of everything being tired, dated, possibly a bit faulty if not outright broken and in need of replacement.

None of her adult children stay any more because the shower doesn't work and you need a special knack to flush the loo.
