Pregnant dog

AIBU? So my partner came home last night and told me he thinks the dog is pregnant (by another dog from his work that I thought was neutered) I was absolutely livid and told him I am not having a litter of puppies at home because he is at work all day and I will be the one looking after them. We had a massive row over it and I get told I'm selfish.

So the reasons I don't want to are, she's a big dog and likely to have a big litter, I have a 6 month old baby and am pregnant, I've just spent the last 3 years overcoming psychosis and getting my mental health back on track and I feel this would be a massive trigger for me.

He's saying I wouldn't have to do anything as the mum would but I just don't think that's true. Please tell me if I'm in the wrong? It's like he's done it on purpose

I don't understand where you're getting xl bully from? There is no xl bully involved here

People are working out assumptions based off the genetic traits of the parents and the very generic definition of what is an XL Bully.

It's literally nothing to do with this thread at all. What is the point of this thread is the dog getting appropriate veterinary care, attention and medical support.

The puppies may well meet the criteria. But of course you won't know until they are born. I know someone with a Dogue de Bordeaux mix (can't remember the other dog), and it meets the criteria. It is a vast dog, and weighs more than I do.

several people have said that crossing these 2 types of dogs will produce puppies that look very like XL bullys, and given that the definition of an XL buly is done by what they look like, not their genetics, there is a high risk of them being classed as such.

@HateSpewingTurnip I was waiting for it to be honest which is why I didn't write what breed she was in the op as I know how people think when hear particular breeds

Op XL bullies would somehow get shoehorned into a thread about a pregnant chihuahua 🤣

IDK Isn't it an offence to breed let alone sell XL Bully puppies?

Hence the 'accidental' mating

steppemum · 12/09/2024 16:15

OP, this is a really touhg postion to be in.

You need to start thinking about who'se name is on the house? Do you have to leave, or can you kick him out? How are you going to get him to leave?

You can't have 10 baby XL type dogs around a baby and a newborn.

Dogue de Bordeaux is a recognised kennel club breed but tbh it’s irrelevant to this convo (just slightly concerning a vet nurse is giving out wrong information ..if in doubt, keep quiet or google..www.thekennelclub.org.uk/search/breeds-a-to-z/breeds/working/dogue-de-bordeaux/)

I misheard heard her - it s Cane Corso's that are not recognised, so my post still stands.

OP, just had a interesting conversations with my DD, who is a vet nurse. She has pointed out the Douge de Bordeaux (sp?) are not recognised in this country by the British Kennel Club. If you google bulldog types, they come up. These puppies will be classified as an XL bully. XL Bully is not a breed but a list of requirements, such as height, etc. It is illegal to breed them, so if he is shopped to the police, there is a chance you could get this pregnancy stopped now.

If you love this bitch, you want to stop this pregnancy. DD has pointed out that a large breed will be a VERY expensive CC, more than 2K and they bleed a lot more, so her life is at risk. The fact that she has been bred to a dog much bigger than her means massive puppies with a much higher chance of getting stuck in the birth canal, so you can pretty much guarantee a CC is going to required, with a huge risk to mother and pups.

Please also research DCM, which is dilated cardio myopathy, which is pretty much a breed trait in the father and average life expectancy is four to six.

As I said, he is a selfish, greedy prick, with no concern for anyone but himself. Do whatever you have to protect yourself and your children from this idiot. He KNOWS he is in the wrong, hence the lying.

No I can't because I've rung and enquired this afternoon so I've got the guilt of what's going to happen to her if she's not here.

Whole thing is a mess

OP, you have to stop absorbing any responsibility for this right now. You have nothing to feel guilty about. It's not your doing, it's not even your dog. Yes, I understand you love the dog and you may feel sorry for her but not guilty! The only person who should feel guilt and shame is your partner.

leighks123 · 12/09/2024 14:58

Absolutely - literally was about to post the same. I think the risk of cane corso crossed with DDB pups ending up fitting XL bully type is significant. Really not a sensible idea.

Lostinbrum · 12/09/2024 14:45

Really feel for you OP. The puppies will be huge. Also just have a look on the usual pet selling sites. Puppies don't go as quick as they did in lockdown. If she has a big litter you can't guarantee that once they hit 8 weeks old they will all fly out the door you coukd end up having alot of them in the house for another couple of months and they grow quick. For your own sanity I think you need to evaluate your options and leave him to deal with his own mess. I'm guessing he will want to keep one aswell adding to your stress

@Efacsen hi, yea I am under there team the psychosis wasn't from my previous pregnancy it was a lot of stress I went through a few years ago but I have been getting support and I am in a much better place. I'm under the perinatal team just for extra support and I have arranged a meeting to see some one tomorrow,
I haven't worked this hard to get my life back on track just for one idiot to ruin it again

Good luck with that - pleased to hear you're getting some proper support

Your partners behaviour is truly beyond belief particularly with the challenges you already have had to contend with

Take good care

Thank you all. I think walking away is my only choice now 😢

Because of your previous PPP are you getting extra support in this pregnancy from perinatal mental health? If not, it might be a good idea to let your midwife know about your difficulties at home - you really need to look after yourself and your 2 little ones especially as it seems your partner is being so selfish and putting you and your family at risk

Also confide in supportive family and friends

leighks123 · 12/09/2024 14:19

I wish I could take her to the vets but I just can't I am not registered owner of her so hopefully he does the right thing

Yeah he's done that on purpose. I wouldn't want anything to do with a man breeding these giant dogs. What ever for? Abort and spay, or I would walk away - not safe animals to have around kids.

krustykittens · 12/09/2024 14:04

He has done this deliberately, OP. Funny how it wasn't a mongrel or a Labrador she got knocked up by. As PP have pointed out, a LOT can go wrong. Even if it goes well, you still need to give her a lot of help, she won't just 'do it all herself'. Homes will also be very hard to come by. The amount of dogs being surrendered to shelters is on the increase with the COL. He really is a selfish, stupid prick. All this when you are pregnant, I am so sorry. x

MissUltraViolet · 12/09/2024 14:02

leighks123 · 12/09/2024 13:52

And that is exactly my argument with him. This could completely change her as a dog and alrhough I would never leave any dog with my children without supervision it makes me even more anxious

You need to stick up for yourself and your children OP, please.

I know these dogs have a bad rep and for good reason a lot of the time. I also know there are some genuinely soft, gentle, loving ones out there but a pregnancy or even phantom could really mess with her, she could become really guarded, protective, miserable and uncomfortable. Your partner is putting you all in danger.

That's without going into the sort of scum that would be interested in these puppies and the shitty lives they could end up with, if you all get that far with no issues beforehand.

Problem is op can’t just take someone’s else’s dog to the vets for treatment she’s not the registered owner they didn’t even jointly get this dog it predated her.

Odds are now as well he will of rang the vets himself and make it perfectly clearly nobody but him has authority to carry out any medical decisions for her.

Sorry your partner is a irresponsible knob head op
