To not understand the obsession with ‘doodle’ breeds

Eg: labradoodles, cockapoos etc.

They are absolutely everywhere! Why are people actively seeking out and paying pedigree prices for dogs that are effectively mongrels? Behavioural problems are all too common, not to mention hereditary health issues due to poor and unethical breeding - I am a dog owner and the vast majority of doodles, ‘poo’ breeds etc that I meet are incredibly hyperactive, with owners who have no clue how to deal with them. Obviously there are exceptions, some are lovely but as a rule of thumb they’re dogs that I tend to cross the street to get mine away from.

The breeder who created the labradoodle calls it his ‘life’s regret’ - that speaks volumes in my opinion!

I have a poodle mix.

Clearly I don't think he's a certain breed, and nor does it offend me when people say he's a mixed breed - because that's what he is.

He's also clearly some kind of magical unicorn of the poodle mix world, as both of his parents were health tested.

I can see why people worry about the breeding of dogs, but think it's quite lazy to zone in on the poodle mix - especially when there are actual 'breeds' out there that are bred to be disgustingly unhealthy. My poodle mix is going to be living a much better life than a dog that struggles to breathe at the best of times.

My position is basically no one who has one would have got a working cocker. Because they would be "too much" for a non working home.

Guess what you did. Just looks different.

In the right hands - as with working cockers, they can be nice dogs. But they are generally owned as a first dog by people who think their temperament and training needs will match their butter wouldn't melt looks.

It's two working breeds. In novice hands they are a challenge. Hence so many neurotic, badly managed and hence badly behaved ones.

Any breed that is popular is bred by people out to make money from novice owners who go for a look, follow a trend rather than breed characteristics.

To deny that is deeply disingenuous.

We got a cocker spaniel sitting 2020 - totally planned and enabled by dh wfh. Chose the breed after researching and he’s perfect for our family. Neighbour got a cockerpoo the same time and told me we’d made an error and would have been better off with a cockerpoo… 4 years later his dog barks continually when they leave him (every day for work) and ours is totally chilled around the house and only goes bonkers in walks but has great recall.

It's kind of obvious why their dog is nuts. Any dog they would have it would be crazy.

They should have got a cat and a cat flap instead. Cat could have gone visiting other people while they are at work.

They're the equivalent of grey interiors.

user1471556818 · 11/09/2024 22:28

The problem with them is that there are no rules .Horrible people can breed these poor dogs non stop from a younger age to an older age .The kennel club definitely hasn't done certain breeds any favours but does prevent this.
I've seen some absolutely fantastic ones and some that are sadly just mental .

Waystation · 11/09/2024 22:26

I have a cockerpoo he is nearly 8 and the best dog - affectionate, happy, amazing temperament and very dog clever - everyone in our village loves him - he is just a total sweetie! Oddly enough while walking in the forest today I was thinking how well behaved he was compared to some of the dogs we met! So what if he is a mongrel I don’t care and I don’t love him any less. As for why I got him - I saw one and thought to myself that’s the happiest looking dog I have ever seen! I feel I’m so lucky to have him. PP who are obviously offended by this type of dog please take an eye roll from me!

Then she's a back yard breeder. No lineage to trace back for many many generations to track full health of all the dogs and removal of any that don't meet high standards from the breeding line.
I bet they make a fortune too. Most BYBs make huge amounts from absolute idiots over paying for a dog with unknown history and health.

😂 You couldn’t get less of a back yard breeder if you tried- Kennel club registered parents with an extensive list of health checks, lovely place of birth ( was worried she’d think she was slumming it at our house)with superb socialisation producing the end result of a very happy, friendly and healthy dog.

Csdrassticcallychanginngnnammes · 11/09/2024 22:25

We have a miniature poodle. We cut her the same all over, so she looks like a normal dog. Everyone thinks she’s a cockapoo or a cavapoo. Instead we have a properly bred dog, who doesn’t have any health or behaviour issues. Poodles don’t shed, they are loving, obedient, very intelligent, easy to train and calm.

tillyandmilly · 11/09/2024 22:24

Because they look like teddy bears! I would love any doodle dog but sadly live in a flat!

Poggishairtufts · 11/09/2024 22:23

Aka mongrels

Wheelz46 · 11/09/2024 22:23

CherryValley5 · 11/09/2024 22:16

Looking at some of the doodle prices near us people are paying the same for a mongrel as what I paid for our KC registered golden retriever with excellent lineage and health tested parents. It’s madness

How did pure bred dogs come about?

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 11/09/2024 22:23

YABU. Most “poo” breeds have no worse or better health or behaviour than any pedigree breeds. It’s mostly dependent on the owner and whether they find a good puppy trainer in the first place. And all pedigree breeds were mixed breeds way, way back - whos to say some of the “poo’s” won’t count as a separate (possibly renamed) pedigree breed in the future?

I’ve had mixed breeds - mostly “poo’s” as well as pedigree gun dogs breeds and terriers over the years (mainly rehomes). Health was no different, it’s a bit pot luck and while training the gun dog breeds was generally easier (as expected) the “poo’s” weren’t any more difficult than the stubborn terriers!

Everyone loves them because of their ‘teddy bear’ looks but generally they are very needy and hate being left alone, also rather manic

I’m honestly not a fan of their look, it’s quite scruffy to me!

All dogs smell to some extent, you’ve just gone nose blind to it. Much nicer, proper non shedding breeds are out there.

They are paying more for a cross breed than a pedigree with health testing.

HangingOver · 11/09/2024 22:14

Also, she doesn't really smell at all compared to other dogs. It's weird. I have friends with much shorter hair dogs that stink but even when her fur is quite long she only seems to smell when wet.

CherryValley5 · 11/09/2024 22:14

F0urt33n · 11/09/2024 22:13

Ours was a very reputable breeder and I’d rather have a mixed breed so you can take umbrage all you like. Don’t care. 🤷‍♀️

I agree. Cockatoos are easy to train 😂

Reputable breeders don't breed mongrels. I have nothing against mixed breed dogs; my DD has a lovely one however he is not a designer breed and that is, like the OP, what I take umbrage to. There are exceptions however when their owners treat them like a dog and not the latest fashion.

My perception is that people believe a pedigree of any sort is likely to have health issues so a cross will have better health and temperament.

I believe a lot of that attitude is people not wanting to pay for a responsibly bred pedigree. Health testing for hereditary problems etc comes with a price.

My favourite dog on earth is my friends cockapoo. She so sweet and loving. Excellent recall. Doesn't pay attention to other dogs. Dream dog really. About as clever as a box of hair though 😂

F0urt33n · 11/09/2024 22:10

CherryValley5 · 11/09/2024 22:07

You do not own an actual breed though. MNers hate this fact but to be frank you own a glorified mongrel. Why not get one of the breeds that your dog is mixed with? If a labradoodle get a Labrador etc - a doodle or poo mix certainly is not the only dog who is going to tick your boxes.

Couldn’t hive a shit if she is a mongrel
or a breed. Why would we? She’s gorgeous, a joy and part of the family. Don’t want a show cocker or a poodle , we wanted and adore our cockapoo who is perfect.
