What are your funeral songs?

Appreciate it's a bit of a morbid question, but an important one (I feel) nonetheless. My family have always been quite pragmatic and have wills, but also a document entitled 'in the event of my death' My Mum keeps a copy of hers in her mobile phone case.

I think it's a last opportunity to tell people who you are / how you feel / what music you loved. Apart from that, it's also an opportunity to leave some potential comforting 'words'

My sister died young - aged only 29 - of complications from a heart issue related to her Downs Syndrome. At her funeral she had Alone by Heart and Lily The Pink played. She alos had the theme from Heartbeat. For a short time afterwards I couldn't listen to the former, but now it makes me smile. Lily The Pink made us all smile, as did Heartbeat as it was what made her smile too.

Anyway, mine are:

Stop Crying Your Heart Out by Oasis, and
White Lies by Stereophonics (I love them, amd this is my favourite song of theirs)

Apologies to anyone recently bereaved. I hope this isn't upsetting.

My grandad was a proper Yorkshire man. At his funeral we had the theme from Last of the Summer Wine, an instrumental version of on Ilkley Moor Ba Tat played by the RAF band and La Golandrina.
We only had the instrumental version of on Ilkley Moor because my sister was bothered by the lyrics about the worms eating you when you’re dead. I wanted the version with the lyrics, my grandad would’ve found it hilarious!!

We played Slipping through my Fingers by ABBA at my granny's funeral. A reminder that she wasn't always an old lady but had been one a girl and woman with hopes and dreams.

The funeral that is etched in my memory is where we came in to the Eastenders theme tune and went out to Who Let The Dogs Out.

Wow. Well if they intended it to be memorable, it certainly worked!

For my 13 year old son's recent funeral

Walking in: The Beatles - Here comes the sun (he did a Beatles music project at school and loved the song, plus I am originally from Merseyside)

Photo montage: One Direction - The story of my life

The committal: Coldplay - Sky full of stars ( he listened to Coldplay throughout all his proton beam treatment, he had cancer)

Walking out: Pharel Williams - Happy (this was a difficult choice, but we really wanted to celebrate his life. His friends did a conga and we all danced and it was magical)

I can't listen to any of these songs anymore

I'm so sorry for your loss. Xox

Through The Barricades by Spandau Ballet, I tell my family I want it at my funeral everytime it comes on! Need to give some thought to the others, hopefully I'll have many years to do so! We went out to Baggy Trousers by Madness at the funeral of a friend who died far too young 😪

I work in the funeral industry and we have the usual...lots of abba, time to say goodbye, nimrod (today) but the best was in a Sally army church....highway to hell!!!

I am coming in to gene Vincent's version of somewhere over the rainbow. No hymns but during the service Elvis how great thou art, Eddie Cochran three steps to heaven. Going out to buddy holly it doesn't matter any more. I would perhaps have Elvis and return to sender Wanda Jackson lets have a party

Its a really good thing to let people know what you want even if it's not for 80years! There's nothing worse than hearing when you drive the family away "oh mum wouldn't have liked that" or " they played the wrong version...mum told me she wanted cliff 's one". I always feel like saying did you tell us that...because I know they didn't

I’ve recently decided I don’t want a funeral but did speak with my family about music in the past.
Highway to hell was one of mine!
I also chose This Fire Burns by Killswitch Engage and one of my sons suggested Ding Dong the witch is dead from Wizard of Oz 😂😂

Perfect Day, Lou Reed
Morning has broken, Cat Stevens.

I attended a very important funeral this week and vowed to have no hymns at my funeral. Even with a large congregation the voices are thin and sad and drowned out by the organ ( in church).

What is a very important funeral?

notyourmummy · 13/09/2024 06:14

I've written down my wishes for my funeral, partly because my husband doesn't share my faith and wouldn't know what to pick and partly to make it easier for everyone left behind. 4 hymns chosen, want to be brought in to All Things Bright and Beautiful (I walked up the aisle on my wedding day to it) and the service starts with the words "May the Lord grant us a quiet night and a perfect end" as that's how I'd like my death to be, quiet and perfect.

trackerc · 13/09/2024 03:08

This amazing but unreleased song from Gary Barlow - when I say goodbye
Describes how I want to have gone, living a full life but also signalling the love for those who I'll have left.

BWV 170

TempestTost · 13/09/2024 01:15

I have hymns picked out. No songs, maybe I will choose some for the wake at some point. I'd rather not have songs in the service itself. I feel like the songs I want or find most meaningful might change before I kick the bucket.

For hymns I'd like The Day Thou Gavest Lord is Ended (my grandmother had that,) Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence, and A Mighty Fortress Is Our God which was my favorite as a child. I'd really like my daughter to sing Bist du bei mir, but will leave it up to her to decide if she is up for it . And I want Carillon de Westminster on the organ.

Clementine22 · 13/09/2024 01:02

Music Sounds Better with You - Stardust (just because it’s my favourite song)

Wouldn’t it be Nice - the Beach Boys (went through a phase of loving them in my teens)

Into the Mystic - Van Morrison ( because I kind of relate that one to dying)

My sister wants Teardrops by Massive Attack - so I hate hearing that song and already well up

FranticFrankie · 13/09/2024 01:01

Praise my soul the king of heaven
Anything sung by Mike Patton

OMG. I love that song by Johnny Flynn (and Detectorists for that matter; it is my favourite and most rewatched show) It's the most perfect, gentle, beautiful song and matches the programme perfectly. You may have made me rethink my choices.

I walked down the 'aisle' to The Detectorists (we married in a wood). It's a magical tune.

I only have one song that I definitely want played for my final departure and it's Flogging Molly "If I Ever Leave This World Alive"

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 13/09/2024 00:14

Not my funeral but when my Dads ashes are finally laid to rest with my Mums (she's still alive) , I;d like to play "Going Home" from Mark Knopflers "Local Hero" soundtrack .
