I’m planning a trip and I’m curious about people’s experiences with hotels. What’s the best hotel you’ve ever stayed out and what made it stand out? Whether it’s the service, location, amenities, or something else, I’d love to hear your top recommendations!

@pepperaunt absolutely stay if you can!! I was there for work and from the sounds of my colleagues staying elsewhere locally I definitely hit the jackpot. Apparently it's where our execs are all put up when coming in!

Things that did it for me :

Great atmosphere ~ all staff wear local sports vests over their uniforms and are incredibly friendly. Nothing is too much trouble.

Amazing personal welcome and touches to the room, including chocolates from the Lindt store based under the hotel 😋

Service was insane. I left a very wrinkled blazer on the ironing board whilst I grabbed lunch (I was half done with it and had given up temporarily 😂) ~ housekeeping came whilst I was gone and I came back to it perfectly pressed! No idea how it got done so quickly! They also sourced a souvenir I wanted from another hotel (not part of their chain either) and called to check it was there, before tracking me down to let me know. Also insisted on sending a colleague in the hotel car when having an issue getting an Uber to the airport, despite only 'supposed' to be doing short journeys.

The food and bar is also incredible 😃

Castara Retreat in Tobago. Amazingly beautiful place and such a warm welcome. Not the most luxurious but it's kind of like a home from home.

deltablue · 11/09/2024 19:17

Oberoi, New Delhi - but anywhere. Service off the scale

Mine are UK hotels...

The Queensbury in Bath
Le Manoir Aux Quatre Saisons in Oxford

I'm very lucky to have been able to stay at both a few times and they are lovely, not pretentious just beautiful places to unwind.

The best hotel we've stayed at is the Phulay Bay Ritz Carlton Reserve in Krabi Thailand. We stayed there for our honeymoon 12 hears ago when it just opened and it was amazing and I remember the service was awesome. Our room had the largest bed we have ever seen lol

The Peninsula hotel in Hong Kong. Can't beat it, the luxury suites with the remote control panel in the side of the bath so you can soak and watch TV at the same time, the amazing beds to snuggle in to and sleep for days, the amazing afternoon teas and the staff who just can't do enough for you.

I stayed there in 1978 - sounds like it's been modernised since then!

useitorlose · 11/09/2024 18:56

Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai (the Dar al Masyaf Arabian Summerhouses)
Taj in Downtown Dubai for the best welcome ever
Pimalai resort Koh Lanta

But the one we always go back to, which is not amazing in many ways but it's how you feel about a place - Le Meridien Al Aqah Beach, Dibba, Fujairah, UAE.

NotPennysBoat · 11/09/2024 18:55

Four Seasons Hualalai on the Big Island of Hawaii. Service, location, views, food, cocktails - 100% perfection!

I'm not going to rank ones I would recommend purely for location, as although they were special, it was because of where they were - not the actual hotel; if that makes sense!

I once stayed at a Grand Hyatt in Cairo (long became a Hilton, then now the Grand Nile Tower, mr google tells me), which was on a little island off the Nile Corniche. It had a revolving restaurant on the top, and the food was pretty good, along with the views of Cairo at sunset. The lobby was probably the grandest I've ever been in, and it flowed through to a boardwalk on the Nile. Our room had a balcony onto the Nile, where we could watch the feluccas going by. Everything was marble, and the service was impeccable. Very clean, big rooms, and the most enormous bathtubs!

The Lebua at State Tower in Bangkok is gorgeous. It's got this amazing outdoor bar on about the 65th floor, which looks out over the city, and Chao Phraya River, and is incredible at sunset. The rooms are all large, with a big balcony - and I think they're all suites. The exchange rate means luxury at a reasonable price - but it's still a treat! The service is really attentive, nothing is too much; and we had some amazing food there too. So lovely....

I've also stayed in the Athens Hilton, which has incredible views across the city. The rooftop/outdoor bar is a massive plus point, and although the rooms are fairly nice higher end chain hotels, the Greek hospitality makes it special. It's also one of my favourite places to visit. :)

Nearer to home, Slaley Hall in Northumberland is a favourite. Lovely setting, beautiful food, and amazing staff. It's gorgeous without being snooty. It's not mad expensive, but we've visited 3 or 4 times now. I'd really recommend it.
