Seeing Prisoners celebrating their release?

Horrible seeing prisoners on the news Celebrating their release. One cracked open a bottle, like you do when your celebrating.
Did the news need to show it?
Not nice for the victims to see this?

Why are there so many people in prison anyway?😮

True, but the victims don't need their faces rubbed in it.

It is the fault of the press.

BabyCloud · 23/10/2024 15:32

This morning I saw a video of a couple using a video of the man’s release from prison as their pregnancy announcement.

  1. The Tories closed 17 prisons to save money.
  2. Starmer and the judiciary decided to make an example of the impoverished underclass of British society who protested last summer, by giving people prison sentences for a first offence in which they variously shouted at a police dog, called the police scum and said nasty things about immigrants online. What they did was wrong, but their prison sentences are, in some cases, longer than those given to people for assaulting their girlfriends or causing death by dangerous drunk/drug driving. I’d hazard a guess community service was all that was needed to drum home the message that their behaviour was unacceptable.
Comedycook · 23/10/2024 11:50

Unless you think every single person in prison should be in for life, then you must accept people will come out at some point and probably be quite pleased about it.

Celebrate, yes. Maybe go to the pub for a pint, order in a takeaway. Drinking champagne in the street and hiring Rolls Royces is rather ostentatious though, and I can’t imagine it being anything but hurtful to the victims these people hurt.

I am also personally inclined to think that if rehabilitation has been truly successful then the person would be more likely to want to spend the day in quiet reflection about what went wrong and how they want to live their lives in the future, rather than in such showy displays.

You certainly have a point. They have had plenty of time in their cells to reflect on the consequences of their convictions.
Early release certainly doesn't work for all but we need to give people a chance.
My views are influenced by personal experience

Prisoners have always celebrated being released... and yes, even the ones with champagne spraying everywhere.
The fault here lies with the press for publicising it.

Disagree. All prisoners have every right to celebrate their release ! Let's support released prisoners to integrate back into society and rebuild their lives!

I mean I’d expect them to maybe celebrate in private but to do so in any public way or as if they’ve won is very distasteful yes.

@firsttimemum1230 you might change your mind once they start dealing fentanyl!

Or if your kid gets a batch of spice that's too strong

Drug dealers always have victims

Are you saying Labour lied to us?

Stop the press. Politicians lie all the time, even The Messiah Kier. Though he’ll call it a ‘sin of omission’ or something like it. Something that sounds more palatable than a lie.

'Difficult decisions'?

'Pain'?

So many lines

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 14/09/2024 18:41

"released offender reoffends"

Well, knock me down with a feather. I bet this never happened prior to July when the UK was in a perfectly functioning state.

The incident raises serious questions about the Government's decision to release thousands of criminals early

Does it now? It's easy to throw about statements, but what's not surprising is the contention here is not backed up with any sort of argument whatsoever about why this is the case.

Typical, hysterical, hyperbolic Mail drivel.

firsttimemum1230 · 14/09/2024 18:41

How do you even know there was a direct victim? It could be robbery of a shop. I also don’t see drug dealers as villains or the takers as victims if they want to do those drugs they’ll find a way no matter who sells it to them. How do you know this crime was committed against one person? And in any case can’t someone be happy to come home to their family after serving their time.

no I don’t agree with rapists murderers terrorists etc celebrating but petty crime maybe I don’t care too much about and let people live how they want to although no one should commit crime

Beekeepingmum · 14/09/2024 18:36

I'm not surprised some are celebrating. I do think it is tragic people are released to nothing - talk about setting people up to fail.

AGirlInACountrySong · 14/09/2024 18:33

No it was commonly known some would slip through a loophole....it was discussed here

The government said only people serving time for non violent and non sexual crimes would be released early. Are you saying Labour lied to us?

Yes the Red Tories lied!

What on earth made the prison send an OSG in a van with ex prisoners!??

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 13/09/2024 21:37

DonnaBanana · 13/09/2024 12:30

There aren't any victims to be too upset by them coming out. Labour said only people with non-violent crimes and non-sexual crimes would be coming out. So people doing things like dangerous driving, fraud, drug possession, burglary etc.

Well there’s a slight inconsistency between what you’re saying and what’s been reported (4 days ago in The Guardian). You’re not entirely wrong but, and it’s a bit of a bigger but than I’m comfortable with, prisoners who’ve already served their time for violent/serious offences but are currently serving a sentence for a lesser offence are among those being released. So… who knows how it’ll all look? It’s not the prettiest picture.

Completely agree.

So sorry for what you and your daughter must have been through.

There is no justice now, you're right. Just hard left 'educate, rehabilitate ' etc etc- it doesn't work. Full stop.

This, especially with all the hand-wringers with the 'oh but prison is so unfun and restrictive to the prisoners, how dreadful for them!'
