School not allowing children to wear jumpers

Dd15 has just gone into year 11 at school. They went back last week and the teachers were pulling children out the classroom to uniform check shoes, nails, blazers, lashes etc.
They were cutting the bows off of the girls school socks if they had them on.
But they also told the children that they weren’t allowed to wear their jumpers (plain black v neck which is stated in the school uniform policy) it doesn’t state that the jumpers can only be worn at certain times.

Their reasoning is that it isn’t cold enough yet and they will tell the children when they can start wearing them.

My daughter feels the cold so easily, She near enough always has a coat on but obviously in class they have to take it off but she said today the classrooms were really cold.

AIBU to call or email the school to ask why? It just seems like a bit of a power move with the whole ‘we will tell you when you can wear it’

Wow. You could barely get the kids to wear the sleeveless vests let alone jumpers at our school! Who are the teachers to decide whether the child feels the cold or not? I'd be marching in to see the head (with reinforcement from other parents) over this.

I posted on the parents Facebook page and the only parents who responded said that they aren’t allowed to wear them until October and have to stop in March. Lots of heart emotions and yes this is the rules etc.
But it doesn’t state that anywhere in the uniform policy or on their website.

My school and my kid’s school only allow jumpers under blazers. So if you’re cold, blazer on first. If you’re still cold, you can add your jumper. No jumpers without blazers. (Most prefer the blazer anyway for the pockets.) Are you sure that’s not the policy being applied?

Blazers are compulsory at the school. They are all wearing their blazers she just wants to wear her jumper underneath it.

English schools are crazy. Honestly I'm amazed at the nonsense you all have to put up with.

Batshit uniforms, fines, siblings having to go to different schools, not being 'allowed' to walk home from school, starting school at 4, attendance awards.

😳

💯

I’m already steeling myself for the batshit battles I’m going to need to fight when my child enters the school system.

I’m going to spend half my spare time organising petitions from parents about school uniform rules so our kids don’t freeze/boil.

whatever1980 · 10/09/2024 18:33

No coats allowed in my children's secondary school. Another school I know has banned umbrellas (as well as no coats) so not sure what you're supposed to when it's raining or freezing. Been the policy for years and can't believe it hasn't been challenged

MrsMoastyToasty · 10/09/2024 18:30

Tell the school that you will bill them for the damage of YOUR property. YOU are the person that pays out to kit your child out for school, not the child.

She needs thermals or a vest.

The school will be doing a crackdown.
Not a good idea to defy it now.

If she needs speak to a deputy head or similar and get exemption on "medical" groinds.

They are rife within my schools year 11! Long black socks with massive bows on the side!

Very common here at the high school near me in Glasgow also. Short black skirts, long black socks with bows.

aylis · 10/09/2024 18:18

Uniform policies are mostly ridiculous. Definitely contact them.

BloodyAdultDC · 10/09/2024 17:22

Nah, I don't believe any y11 girl is wearing socks with bows on. I've been a y11 HOY and they are (sorry to be so brutal) humiliated out of socks with bows on within 2 weeks of starting y7.

I'd question the jumper wearing though, if it's part of the uniform and your dad is feeling the cold she should absolutely be allowed to wear it.

Can she wear a T-shirt under her shirt in the meantime?

And yet that person is absolutely correct. This school is breaking the law in a number of respects, including a little matter of criminal damage on the bows on socks.

It's astonishing that schools that claim to be so hot on discipline and enforcing the rules seem to be quite happy to break the law. It's hardly setting their pupils the best example, is it?

Mine has Raynauds so feels cold very easily
and is wearing her jumper she certainly
doesn't need someone telling her when it is the correct time

A couple of days ago, posters were up in arms about compulsory jumpers and blazers because it's always too hot - and trousers instead of shorts or short skirts. And there have been equal complaints about being expected to wear tights. And that fully grown adults are 'floating around in dresses and sandals' whilst their children melt.

If the school says they're optional, you then get people raging because their kid's lost theirs. Or that skirts/trousers are too long, too shirt, too tight and too big or just not liked.

Whatever the rule or absence of rule, there will always be people complaining about it.

So what if children lose jumpers? They will still be losing their jumpers when the school does decide to allow them.

That is not a valid reason to make them get cold. A child who is cold, uncomfortable and shivery will not be able to concentrate and learn. For a school to deny children the right to access education fully just because they find it inconvenient to deal with lost jumpers is a total abrogation of what they are there for.

Literally none of your examples include some complaining about the absence of a rule. A 15 year old is old enough not to lose their jumper.

HappyDane · 10/09/2024 18:08

You need to get on the school's case about that. It's too much to ask her to defy her teacher in the moment - it's up to you to come down hard on your daughter's behalf.

MouseofCommons · 10/09/2024 18:07

Yanbu. The media are wringing their hands about why our teens have so many mental health problems but we have schools pulling this type of nonsense. No one has the right to say whether it's too hot or to cold for anyone, heaven help the employer that tries it. Children deserve to be allowed to keep warm / cool.

Maray1967 · 10/09/2024 18:05

I’m glad my DS isn’t at a school with a ridiculous policy like this.

His school is one of the highest performing schools in the city in terms of academic results. And astonishingly the students can take their blazers off or wear their jumpers as and when they feel the need.

Strange how some schools seem to think blazer wearing correlates with good results. A year spent in a country with excellent standards and no school uniforms showed me that this is utter nonsense.

Frogmarch89 · 10/09/2024 18:01

Schools have absolutely lost the plot with this stuff.

Thank you all. I know I weren’t BU but just wanted to make sure I wasn’t being over the top.
I know there’s a lot in Facebook groups and online about uniform policies at the moment, it seems the schools have decided to clamp down massively.

I told her yesterday to wear it (she didn’t in the end) and said if they said anything then to tell them to call me about it. She told the teacher this and he said that she would be put in isolation or sent home if she refused to take it off.
I told her again today, if she needed to wear it then to tell them to call me if they think it’s a problem. Once she got home today, she said the teachers were telling people to take them off so she just took hers off because she didn’t want to get in trouble.

I'd not let this lie. I'd call them tomorrow and tell them what batshittery it is

Mac3321 · 10/09/2024 17:56

Blazers are compulsory. There’s very few days in the year that the kids are allowed to take them off and that’s only if it’s reaches a ridiculously high temperature.

No bows seen at my school. Some girls wear the jumper all year round even when boiling because they don't like being seen in just the blouse.

It's supposed to be jumper and blazer or just blazer, but lots try to get away with jumper and no blazer. Perhaps they are trying to point out that if it's not cold enough for a jumper AND a blazer that they shouldn't be wearing the jumper. But if they want to insist that blazers are on then they should be saying blazer has to go over jumper, not that jumper has to come off.

Cutting bows off kids' socks sounds like something parents should complain about as I bet bow socks are expensive.
