In Spain - friend issue with hotel room

Morning lovelies
we’re day 3 on our holidays.
On the morning after our first night, my friend was making a cup of tea in her room, and the ceiling collapsed by the bathroom, leaving a large puddle of water on the floor. She was shaken but uninjured.
So yesterday, she had to repack her case and they moved her to another room (of the same standard)
My friend doesn’t articulate herself very well, and gets very anxious, so I’m her official spokesperson, so to speak.
The manager wasn’t available yesterday, but today he’s back - we’ve yet to speak to him, but what do you think is fair to ask for due to the inconvenience and disruption? I was thinking a refund of the first night’s stay (about £160)
AIBU?

No, a faulty shower so you have to call reception and someone has to fix it is a mild inconvenience. A ceiling falling on you and leaving you shocked (as it would); a bit more than that.

My comparison was a shower that then couldn't be fixed, not one that could. The outcome to both is a room move.

A faulty shower unable to be fixed...move rooms. A collapsed ceiling...move rooms. No difference.

@DappledThings I think this thread definitely shows the divide between people who are bothered by things and people who aren't, doesn't it. And I don't think we will ever understand one another. I am in camp not bothered unless it's actually affecting me.

If the hotel has not been negligent then I'd not be wanting compo.

Unless you plan on carrying out an improptu audit how are you going to determine if they've been negiligent or not?

The onus here isn't on the guest to 'get on with it' as some PP imply. The onus is on the hotel to preserve their reputation if they want long term success. Because how a business responds when things go wrong says a lot about their worth.

People work hard and save up all year to get away for a short break, and have every right expect minimum standards from a business.

If I was deciding how to spend my hard earned money and read a hotel room ceiling collapsed and guests were simply moved room I would thing 'why would I want to stay here?'

However, if I read a roof had collapsed and the guests were moved to a better room and offered a free meal I would think 'this hotel recognised their standards fell short, and clearly care about improving the guests experience'.

'mild inconvenience' Grin That would be something like a faulty shower that someone had to come and fix, or a broken chair you couldn't sit on.
This thread is making me see and hear Monty Python's Black Knight.

Nobody was injured, she just moved rooms. Yes mild inconvenience. Why are people so determined to make everything a bigger deal than it is. It must be exhausting being so overly upset over minor things.

OP has now got 2 free bottles of wine and is "considering" leaving it there. As opposed to what? Why waste time of your, I assume otherwise pleasant, holiday trying to get more stuff and spinning this out into being more of an upset than it actually is?

I think they should most definitely refund the first night's stay. It was not only an inconvenience, but also must have given your friend a bit of a shock - I'd have certainly been upset had that happened to me!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/09/2024 11:25

Of course it absolutely must be incompetence on the hotels part, couldn't possibly be anything else like a guest above overflowing a bath or sink

There could easily have been in flood in another room, @Maverickess, but properly inspected/maintained things don't just collapse instantly - or if there's any chance of them doing so I'd expect the room concerned to be kept vacant until repairs had been made

But that would have cost the hotel, and who cares about safety when £££ are concerned?

RosaMoline · 10/09/2024 11:23

We’re not ‘grabby’ or ‘chancers’ thank you very much. We’re actually extremely reasonable and diplomatic people.
Anyway, we saw the duty manager. He’s given us 2 bottles of wine and anything else wasn’t up for negotiation 😬
We do want to enjoy the rest of holiday, and have 2 friends flying in today to join us.
Thinking about leaving it for now, and emailing the hotel group when home. As I said, it’s a Spanish chain, not an independent family run business. He tells us the hotel is full, and there are no other rooms available.

Nothing martyristic about it, just lack of drama. A thing happened, it got resolved, I'll crack on with my day and my holiday now without wondering what else I can get out of it.

It's a mild inconvenience. It was resolved. More that resolution, e.g. a couple of free drinks or something would be a nice gesture but I wouldn't spend a minute fretting over whether I deserved it or not.

Tbh I don’t think this is particularly “good” service - it’s the minimum expected! I would expect some kind of compensation without having to ask (refund on first night, a massage, bottle of wine etc).. you don’t go on holiday and expect the ceiling to fall in and then to have to re-pack bags and move all your stuff. I would find it a massive inconvenience and it would take me time to get back into the holiday.

Edited

I agree; it's not a dirt-cheap hotel and I think they could do more. Maybe an upgrade on the room or, if that genuinely wasn't available, an offer of dinner on the house, and a nice basket of fruit or pastries for the room,

Debrathom · 10/09/2024 11:15

I was checking into a hotel in Glasgow and the guy on Reception asked me to pay the wrong price for my room. I queried it, he apologised and corrected the amount. No big deal and I wasnt remotely bothered by the mistake but he still gave me drinks vouchers for 3 of us for all 3 nights in the hotel bar.
I think a collapsed ceiling at least warrants a bottle of wine on the house!

Janeir0 · 10/09/2024 11:15

No I'd be happy with what they have done, a bottle of wine would be a nice touch but I couldn't get worked up about something that didn't happen (nobody was nearly killed like some people are saying).

LoveHartnett · 10/09/2024 11:12

Absolutely laughing at people saying the matter is sorted with a change of room. The ceiling collapsed and could have killed her- would the hotel have been exempt from any responsibility because they hadn't anticipated that?? I would have expected an apology, and an upgrade and money off as standard- shouldn't have to ask!

Thank god, I was beginning to think I was the only one who thought this! I would expect some kind of reimbursement.

Maverickess · 10/09/2024 11:08

Of course it absolutely must be incompetence on the hotels part, couldn't possibly be anything else like a guest above overflowing a bath or sink.

And having to repack a bag is the absolute height of inconvenience. They should be giving an upgrade and if there isn't one available they should bloody well build one!

Then refund the entire stay, pay for all food and drinks and quite possibly the flights as well, and then you should be leaving a scathing trip advisor review, but don't forget to leave out that they moved your friend swiftly to another room, because that might mean they've done something positive about a situation that happened that was just as likely to be beyond the hotels control as within it.

Or you could just get on with your holiday? Life happens, even in hotels, not everything has to be someone being incompetent or at fault, or needs a reaction of extreme frustration and fury because there's been a bit of inconvenience.

Peoples overreactions to stuff like this are baffling - 'what about the children who weren't there that might have been injured' 🤦.

summersways · 10/09/2024 11:08

The hotel operator and the owner are clearly at fault here as the building should be maintained and there should never be a risk of the ceiling falling down. This is unacceptable. I would expect compensation.

DappledThings · 10/09/2024 11:02

Tumblingjungleofchaos · 10/09/2024 10:26

Exactly!

The mummy martyrs are out in force today - oh it's fiiiiiiinneee - no it's bloody not!

Sad so many people pleasers would put up with this!

A quiet conversation is all that's needed, and I'm sure you'll get something - a better room at least, and some comp whether that's freebies or night refunded. It's the least they could do!

Nothing martyristic about it, just lack of drama. A thing happened, it got resolved, I'll crack on with my day and my holiday now without wondering what else I can get out of it.

I know I’m ashamed of myself for just sitting by the pool with a few ice cold beers and reading my book rather than tracking down the manager to complain about a resolved issue in the hopes of a free bottle of wine that I could buy for pennies at the local supermarket.

Exactly. But you're so pathetic for people pleasing apparently. The only person I'm bothered about pleasing is myself 🤣

Whydoiwearsomuchleopardprint · 10/09/2024 10:55

I would have thought a room up grade would be the right thing to do here, after all your friend has been put out having to pack up and move when she has done nothing wrong, she is paying good money for a room so least they can do!

BeMintBee · 10/09/2024 10:54

Talkaboutt · 10/09/2024 10:51

Be careful you'll be called pathetic for just enjoying your holiday 🤣🤣

Blimey so much over dramatics on this thread! “Valorising misery” “if a ceiling had fallen on me” (it didn’t) “won’t somebody think of the poor children who weren’t actually there but could have been crushed and killed” 🤣

sometimes it’s important to complain but personally I’d rather get on with my holiday! We had to move rooms on holiday this year. Yes it was a faff but on balance not the end of the world and we got the outcome we wanted which was a different room.

Be careful you'll be called pathetic for just enjoying your holiday 🤣🤣

luckylavender · 10/09/2024 10:50

RosaMoline · 10/09/2024 08:19

No, none of her belongings got damaged.
We’re not complainers, very easygoing, but just wondered if it would be acceptable to ask for something?

Not really. For what?

KerryBlues · 10/09/2024 10:49

achipandachair · 10/09/2024 10:35

I can't believe how many of you lot are valorising misery.

The hotel is charging people not for a room you can manage to survive in and keep the elements off. A holiday is supposed to be pleasant, a break, a nice experience. If the roof falls in they have failed and they need to do something about it.

It reads to me as if maybe the people stayed in a room for one night with a hole in the ceiling. Fucking hell.
They were disrupted, probably made anxious, had to faff and get moved, and now have a worse room with smaller beds. The hotel have failed and need to make up for it!

This isn't like going to stay with your mum and there is something wrong with the room but you think ah well, I am here to see her so never mind about the slightly uncomfortable stay. This is a hotel! They charge money on the basis that you are supposed to have a nice time!

Why are people on here so pathetic now about things like this? Some days I come on mumsnet and it seems to be dominated by martyrs grovelling around doing other people's jobs for them for no pay, never bothering a doctor, getting up earlier than their husbands and just "popping" things here and there rather than asking someone else to clear up after themselves - which - fine, have a shit life if you want - but stop shaming women who want something better!

We’re not having shit lives at all, thanks 😁
It’s people like you who probably have sky high blood pressure in your desperation to find something to rage against.
