To ask why people hang poo on trees?

This perplexes me. I can’t think of anything more disgusting than hanging a bag of shit on a tree. Yet they are everywhere.

Someone on here must know someone who does this. What is going through their heads when they do it? Is it a massive “fuck you” to society now expecting poo to be scooped up (I grew up in the 70s/80s when it was acceptable just to leave it on the pavement)?

Or do they think that somehow hanging it like a macabre bauble is what they are meant to do? Do they believe that the Faeces Fairy will come and clear the trees at night time?

I work for a charity which has dog bins. We spend £10,000 a year emptying them in a small locality. We need to double the collections but can’t afford to. The money has been donated for our cause, not dog poo. When the bins overflow, dog owners complain. If asked directly kindly not leave their bag on the overflow pile (as we are trying to tidy it ) people get abusive and throw bags on the same pile in front of us. This is a naice area. I love dogs, but the 50% anntisocial owners are taking over this country.

They're the ones who only picked it up in the first place because someone was watching them. Otherwise they'd have left it on the path. Then they carry it, pretending to be responsible, and chuck it somewhere when there's no one watching them because they can't be bothered to carry it home or to a bin!

I was considering this on my dog walk the other day and could see no reason why you go to the effort of picking up poo and then throwing in a Bush over a 6ft fence, but Badbadbunnies theory sounds the most likely. I have been guilty of picking it up and leaving it in a quiet corner and then picking it up on my way back, always do the same circuit and always pick it up at the end, and is a rare occurrence as dog normally does ablutions next to a bin handily!

WayTooManyTabsOpen · 10/09/2024 08:37

See also people who pile up their dog poo bags on top off/around a poo bin that’s clearly full so that there’s just a mountain of poo filled bags around a barely visible bin. Gross. Take it home with you if the bin is full.

PontiacFirebird · 10/09/2024 08:36

I’ve changed nappies and had to take them home countless times, but then I didn’t have a car when mine were tiny and we’d roam far and wide. Definitely didn’t hang them off a tree….

PontiacFirebird · 10/09/2024 08:34

50% of Dog owners are unbelievably entitled and will somehow defend this.
I’d love a dog, and I have the time to have one now, but I couldn’t put up with some of the owners.

There's an pathway here known to the DCs as 'dog poo alley' - if it isn't on the floor it's in a bag in the trees. There's a dog poo bin at the end of this (at most) 100m stretch so no reason to leave it.

There’s similar near to where I live. I’ll never go again so creepy. In the middle of a small dog walking wood. With dog poo bins at the start and end of the walk. All the trees hung with bags of dog shit. The creepiness is from thinking about the people who might be nearby that were crazy enough to do such a weird antisocial act. Nothing to do with normal human laziness as tying the bags takes more effort than putting them in the bins. Seriously disturbing.

I think that if you choose to go out and about with a dog you need to accept that you must not leave the shit unattended at any time.

Exactly this.

NeedBiggerWindChimes · 10/09/2024 08:25

I don't think comparing it to hanging nappies from trees is the same thing. I've never had to change my baby anywhere where there weren't facilities or I wasn't near my car.

I always carry the bags on walks, though confess that on two occasions I have hidden it behind a tree to collect later (not hung it in a tree or put it anywhere anyone will see it). I walk my dogs in areas it's unlikely anyone else will go, so the hiding isn't even really necessary. The two times I did it was because I was doing a long walk and didn't want to carry it for that long. I also did actually reclaim the bags on the way back and take them home. It would be wrong not to. 99.9% of the time though, I'm carrying it the whole way.

I think hanging it in a tree is gross though. No-one wants to see that.

Lots of walks don't have bins on so people hang them on trees or leave them somewhere noticeable to pick them up on the way back to the car, home etc rather than carry the poop bag the entire way.

But then they don't pick them up!

I see bags just dotted along the verges around here. It really annoys me - just no consideration for other people or the environment at all.

Or it could be that they're lazy half-arsed fuckers who literally don't give a shit.

In case you hadn't noticed - it really pisses me off!

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 10/09/2024 08:18

They go out for a walk with their dog and it does a crap but there is no poo bin in sight so they think they are being thoughtful by hanging the bag from a tree so that no one treads on it. It seems not to occur to the lazy, entitled buggers that they should take it home with them. I doubt anyone will own up to doing this.

These owners need to carry a zipped bag with them to put the poo in, rather than leaving it hanging and stinking for others on their walk. It’s disgusting to leave it lying around.

The happy comparison was a good one. Mums never leave nappies hanging to ‘pick up later’, we bag them and take them with us if there is no nappy bin .

I’m bemused at the idea that a lack of poo bins requires antisocial measures. Surely dog poo bins are the exception rather than the norm on most walks that are not in municipal parks?

Are they walking from Land’s End to John O’Groats and back? Because those bags are waiting there weeks for them to return.

OP posts:
SensibleSigma · 10/09/2024 08:09

I used to leave the bag for my return journey 20mins later- not in a tree- but was thoroughly disabused of the notion that was ok, so I no longer do.

gretathegremlin · 10/09/2024 08:08

I think it's because they think they are being vey vey responsible in not leaving it on the ground to get trodden on or wheeled through, but can't be arsed to actually walk to the nearest bin with it.

Wolfpa · 10/09/2024 08:08

They will act like they are leaving it there so it is noticeable and they will pick it up on their return of the walk.

really they are just disgusting and probably think it’s funny to make the outdoors less enjoyable for other people

But it makes the area really unpleasant.

Part of being a dog owner is unfortunately carrying bags of poo on your walks!

SleepGoalsJumped · 10/09/2024 08:06

My theory is that it would have started off with people on country walks with no bins and a there-and-back route planning to leave the poo there on the way out and collect it up on the way back to bin when they get home so that they don't have to carry a bag of poo with them for the whole walk. However from time to time someone would miss a bag and every time a selfish arsehole sees one they see it as actually permission and an invitation to do this because clearly it's an acceptable thing to do so the problem multiplies, and becomes common even on routes where bins exist.

Ha Ha! They just say that when challenged. In reality, they've no intention of picking them up again.
