To think it’s okay to take certain things from a hotel?

For once I really hope this post is by a journalist, and not a shameless MNer.

I only take the toiletries and coffee stuff etc

I stayed in a hotel Dubai few times and they gave you a large rubber duck with the name of the hotel on it 😂 and a bathrobe

I’ve stayed there 4 times over the years and have 4 rubber ducks and 4 bath robes

I never understand this; I think only very poor people do it. If you can afford a hotel why do you need to steal mugs, glasses, pillows, sheets, etc.

I always take the tea bags and coffee sachets as well as mini jams and spreads if they're provided. I certainly wouldn't take towels or anything - in fact, I usually bring my own towels because I'll have dyed my hair to go on holiday and I don't want to wreck the hotel's ones.

Now cups... I have never taken a cup because they're all big mugs but I really want some of those old-style, small, cheap cafeteria cups because they'd be the perfect size for mug cakes and I can't find them anywhere. If they were in my hotel room I'd definitely be tempted.

Malmaison had squeezy (non refillable) toiletries that were labelled "the best you'll ever steal" or words to that effect. I took them home and agreed thry were very nice....but was it stealing? in reality what were they going to do with a used bottle of shampoo/shower gel possibly with a few strands of my hair on it? It's definitely not being put out for the next guest!!

Of course you shouldn't take fixtures and fittings. 🫣

I have taken the mini shampoos to use on future weekends where there won’t be any provided and I have to pack light - used to pack sachets of shampoo but they seem to have fallen from favour. I wouldn’t bother with teabags etc., I have them at home. Biscuits for the journey home.

I used to take the biros when on business trips - my employer didn’t put any in the stationery cupboard and promotional pens were all we used in the office. Pinching mugs is theft.

I agree with single use consumables, but certainly wouldn't go so far as a box of tissues or loo roll!
I also read an article once where someone in the industry said they are more than happy for you to take the small branded notepad and pens left in your room as they advertise the hotel.

Of course it’s to do with social background. To a certain extent it’s learned behaviour.

What am I reading, who even has to ask if it’s stealing if you make off with the mugs and glasses . 😂

Oh yes, being a petty thief is absolutely fine. Keep stealing, because it's totally normal and classy. A hotel isn't a victim, so just do it hun and enjoy yourself.

It’s stealing. And it costs the business in replacing these things time after time. So no. Single use toiletries yes, they’re put there for your use. Anything else, absolutely not.

Friends of ours -a couple - have form for this. The BF has been heard to enthuse that the hotel towels were so fluffy he could hardly close his suitcase !! They regularly used to clean out every hotel room they stayed in. Until they came unstuck. They hadn’t noticed the inventory list in one hotel room, and found themselves billed for everything they took. Never did it again.

Travel sized toiletries can be bought in Boots or Superdrug.

When staying at a friends house, she provides miniature toiletries in little bags (she flies ALOT) and always encourages guests to take them.

I’m SO excited I now get to take the Damien Hirst off of her wall aswell!

I’ve just come up to my own holiday let to repair/ redecorate from the summer damage.

Someone has stolen the fruit bowl. It wasn’t anything special, just a bamboo one from ikea.

I won’t be replacing it. It’s just another nice thing I won’t now provide due to light fingered thieves guests.

I do miss the single use toiletries now most hotels do big bottles that they top up between guests (that are not for taking) due to environmental reasons (and is probably for the best re plastic waste) .

Although hotels probably do prefer this now as I'm sure it costs them less!

I always take the slippers. Used ones will get thrown away, & can last 2-3 months back home. DH doesn't wear them, so they go to a charity shop.

Toiletries yes, often taken to the food bank if the hotel have been generous. Slippers if the type that are very simple, would possibly fall apart if washed and many people would wear out in one stay, Maybe tea/coffee sachets if we are expecting to use them elsewhere.

You can take consumables - toiletries, biscuits, loo roll (if you're so inclined!) etc.

Bit weird to pocket all of the instant tea/coffee sachets, but some people do - whatever.

But taking mugs, glasses, towels etc is stealing and you'll likely be invoiced if you do.

Oh my god, I once met a colleague who would do just that. They thought it was acceptable to take the beer glass with them at a pub, and even said they did it often to “amass” a collection of glasses from different restaurants! No shame whatsoever. I remember sitting there with my jaw dropped to the ground!

They were genuinely confused when I said that was stealing! Some people are just clueless!!

So you have a cupboard full of hotel brand cups and glasses?

No chance why on earth do people do this it's beyond tacky and chavy to take things from hotel stay and also half the time hotels charge you for taking certain items and rightly so.
