pregnant sister drinking redbull

handsoap · 08/09/2024 16:10

i've had 2 children myself, and did no drink any energy drinks due to the fear of what could happen. my sister is 36 weeks pregnant, drinks a 355ml of redbull a day and has multiple coffees a day.

i have told her multiple times that she shouldn't be having so much caffeine as it goes straight through to her placenta and she doesn't listen to me or anyone, she hides it from her boyfriend. i think she forgets it's her own child she has put at risk here, no one else's. she also occasionally vapes.

am i being an *hole for calling her out?

Of course you're not being unreasonable.

SpeakfromExperience · 09/09/2024 01:10

OP, you need to learn a very valuable lesson in life. That is, that you cannot control anybody else.

It matters not what you think, whether you like or dislike what she does, and whether you feel you are right or right, or in fact whether you have facts right or wrong.

It's all inconsequential because women have (or should have) autonomy over our own bodies and lives, regardless what others think of it. Regardless if others feel we are making the wrong choices, regardless if they impact someone else, to some degree.

Your body is yours. Your pregnancies were yours. Your children are yours. Your choices are yours. Her body, pregnancy, children and choices are hers, there's not a thing you can do about it, so back off.

People who try to force their ideals on others are tedious, tend to not be very nice people, and have controlling tendencies. Not nice characters. Look a bit closer to home, first.

@DoIWantTo i don't really care about other people's pregnancies, this is my sister not some random person off the street.

don’t really care about other people’s pregnancies

Weird statement from someone who claims to be an NCU nurse

handsoap · 08/09/2024 18:56

@Choochoo21 i have no idea! she stopped taking her birth control without telling her boyfriend, in a pretty shitty situation as they are both early 30s and live with my parents. she had just been broken up with after being cheated on in her past relationship of 9 years.

me and my parents think she baby trapped him because she is getting older and has always wanted a child. caused endless arguments with me when i was pregnant with my first and even planned to block me and our family because i 'stole' her baby name.

she has called her unborn baby a b*tch, a cow. etc. like i said, she has always lived jn a fairy world and probably didn't realise how shit pregnancy really was until it was too late.

So basically, you’re just posting here hoping that everyone will join you in slagging her off, then. Nice.

Your family relationships sound dysfunctional and you should probably take a step back and be less enmeshed in the details of your sister’s pregnancy.

Caffeine passes through the placenta easily and into the fetus and amniotic fluid. Because the placenta and fetus lack the enzyme that metabolizes caffeine, high caffeine intake during pregnancy can be harmful to the fetus.

Most experts recommend that pregnant people limit their caffeine intake to 200 mg or less per day. Some studies have linked higher caffeine intake during pregnancy to: Reduced birth weight, Stillbirths, and Overweight or obese infants.
Caffeine's half-life increases during pregnancy, reaching 11.5-18 hours by the end of pregnancy.
This can lead to an accumulation of caffeine in the body with regular daily consumption.

can we have some silence in here now?

If you wanted silence, you shouldn’t have started a thread.

@Bringautumnnights ex smoker, ex alcoholic and caffeine user. don't tell me about struggles i have already come acrossed and faced. yes everyone is different, but when you decide and plan to have a child, you sacrifice your issues for the health and benefit of your child that had no choice to be here.

If you've got such a solid opinion and literally everyone else is wrong why have you bothered doing a post.
Obviously literally everyone who doesn't agree with you hounding your sister about her life is clearly wrong, and you're right.

Let her do what she wants, you've told her the risks, she knows the risks - leave her be, jeez.

SouthLondonMum22 · 08/09/2024 22:13

You've said your piece, I'd leave it alone now.

Ultimately, it's her body and her choice. Attempting to police a pregnant woman's body is a slippery slope.

GabriellaMontez · 08/09/2024 21:57

There's no way you're a nurse.

@handsoap
The thing is, the more you tell your sister not to do something, especially given the job you do, the more she is going to do the exact opposite. I rather suspect that every time you lecture her, she goes home and has a Red Bull, just to spite you. You need to accept that she is her own person and you are yours. Keep your opinions to yourself and you may find that she actually reduces her intake because it's not on her mind so much. She's going to have all and sundry giving their opinion on what she should and shouldn't be doing during her pregnancy, be her sister, not another judgemental voice, she knows your opinion. Only offer it if she asks, unless you don't want a relationship with your new niece or nephew.

Excellent assessment

Mum2jenny · 08/09/2024 20:58

Actually if you were my sister, I’d tell you to fuck off. You’ve said your stuff, but it’s my baby and I’ll do what the fuck I want.

Can you tell I’m sick of ppl telling me what to do?

However I’m fortunate not to be in the OPs scenario!

Pls OP do what you want, and ignore your sibling. Yes, she may be right in her information but it’s your choice to agree or disagree with them.

INeedAnotherName · 08/09/2024 20:57

The bottom line is:
You have already repeated told her.
She has ignored you.

There's nothing left you can do unless you are planning on kidnapping her and locking her in a room until she's had the baby, like a drug/cult intervention type thing. You need to let this go unless you want to permanently damage your relationship with her although it sounds as if you despise her so it might already be too damaged.

Beefholahoops · 08/09/2024 20:56

I once got told off for drinking coffee when I was pregnant.
I carved it more when I was pregnant.
My auntie used to eat it from the jar when she was pregnant.
My baby was born healthy 19 years on still healthy.

Mybusyday · 08/09/2024 20:56

Energy drinks killed my brother at the age of 27 - those things are lethal! The foetus would definitely be affected, shocking that people can treat their unborn children like this

TheRealSlimShandy · 08/09/2024 20:48

handsoap · 08/09/2024 20:08

that's broad of you since i don't give a flying donkeys horse about her choices in who she has a child with. i care more about the fact that my sisters baby has dropped multiple growth centiles which could have been avoided.

why mention it here then?

Mickey79 · 08/09/2024 20:45

You don’t sound like you like your sister very much. Probably in everyone’s best interests to take a step back.

Kentuckycriedfrickin · 08/09/2024 20:42

Hellskitchen24 · 08/09/2024 20:06

That’s ok then. She might as well have vodka with her Red Bull then by your analogy. And maybe chuck a line of cocaine in there, too. Her body her choice after all. Jesus wept. The body autonomy loons are out in force today I see.

"Bodily autonomy loons" believe that a woman has freedom of choice and isn't just an incubator.

I might not personally agree with the choices other women make but I will defend to the hilt their right to make them and I'll keep my opinions about their choices to myself too because I'm not a judgemental dick

handsoap · 08/09/2024 20:42

Severe migraines which left me unable to string together a sentance

Same with me, but I had coffee instead, sometimes the little chilled cans, especially in the first trimester with dd2 as I knew it helped me cope with the migraines and no way of taking regular medication. Was told it was ok by a specialist at the hospital. Migraines are truly miserable aren't they.

I also had medication for the migraines in the 2nd trimester with both which came with a very slight (and it really was minuscule) risk of increase in heart defects, could not be taken in the third trimester as risk was too high. My mother told me off for it and I had to remind her that I am a living person who was unable to eat or even get out of bed for several days a week due to the migraines and I was making the right choice for me and my baby. So unless a pregnant woman is drinking to excess or snorting coke I am not quick to judge.

You didn't get the desired effect of loads of people coming on and berating your sister, so now you want silence?

Why ask the question in the first place if you didn't want the answers?

The ‘body autonomy loons’ are literally pointing out the law. It’s up to the woman to decide whether she wants to throw in a vodka with a red bull, she wouldn’t be committing a criminal offence.
