DH and me on Mounjaro weightloss injections

WaffleDogg20 · 06/09/2024 06:57

God I’m so fed up.

Usually my husband and myself diet together. We’ve done every diet under the sun and we support each other through it.

This time I decided to start mounjaro and he hasn’t. He’s not comfortable with his body what so ever and claims he’s the biggest he has ever been but won’t join me on this and doesn’t seem to be making any changes.

It feels like he’s jealous of me losing weight. He says I talk about it all the time but I don’t, he rolls his eyes when I mention anything iv lost, he never asks me how much iv lost or how am I doing. He’s not acknowledged any change in me. I tried a pair of jeans on today that I couldn’t even get up a few months ago and now I can do up! I told my daughter first and then went downstairs to tell him and all he said was “I heard you upstairs”.

iv been on it a month now and lost nearly 2 stones. Iv been unable to tell him or speak to him about how im feeling because he just says “you do talk about it a lot” I bloody don’t.

It’s really really getting me down. He’s making me feel embarrassed and ashamed for losing weight and being proud of myself. I don’t know what to do 😞

All these people saying it stops the food noise…. That food noise will just return once you stop taking it. What happens then? The weight will creep back on unless you tackle the root cause and your relationship to food. The drug is only ever a sticking plaster.

My weight gain was mostly due to medication, side effects, which feels really unfair on top of being sick since my teens. Whenever I've been doing better and able to come off that medication for a bit I've been able to lose weight through calorie restriction. I've recently had a new medication added that can cause lack of appetite and weightloss as a side effect and am losing weight slowly. I knew this was possible so ive been cutting out as much as i can. Although it's still taking effort to lose the weight It doesn't really feel like I've earnt the weightloss.

I think this is the thing I have issue with - phrases like 'earnt the weight loss'

It shows how much is tied up with moral value and weight.

I have lost weight, its not an 'achievement' that I want a medal for, or consider I 'earned' something, its huge relief that my health, my mobility, my future, my organs, my hormones, my fitness is worlds apart from what it was 10 stone ago.

EliLilly · 06/09/2024 17:02

I'm taking Mounjaro and although DH is supportive he also has made it subtly clear he doesn't want to hear about it much, and that suits me. This is the same for any time I have tried to lose weight.

I actually like NOT talking about weight loss to people in 'real life'. I have support/opportunity to talk about it online and with one close friend (who is also taking MJ), although as the weeks go on the amount we talk about it has reduced - they are more interesting things to talk about! Other than this one friend no one other than DH knows I am taking it - the main reason being I just don't want to talk about it, just do it.

Your DH has made it clear that he doesn't want to talk about it. Take power from NOT talking about it with him and enjoying your milestones yourself. I think you were rude suggesting it to him multiple times, and I dare say he feels judged and defensive. Leave him be. You may well inspire him a year or so down the line when you've lost the weight you want to lose and are happily maintaining.

Good luck for your continued success!

Sorry, I had misinterpreted what was said. After it was explained like that it did actually make much more sense.

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 06/09/2024 16:11

@onfiree Read the threads. They are lying to claim a bmi of 30 to get the injections, otherwise they wouldn't get them. You're the one with the weird attitude if you think these injections should be used by people who aren't severely obese, and those who lie to claim they are, who can lose weight by other means.

My sister is on ozempic and has been for a year. She has lost 25kg and looks great. No ozempic face or other loose skin. I think she should stop now but she is determined to loose 13kg more. It seems that these weight loose jab people have unrealistic goals and end up having loose skin.

I'd have loose skin regardless of how I lose weight, I've been overweight since a teen and I'm now 50...no amount of exercise is going to make everything ping back

I don't think @mm81736 was dissing the injections, more likely dissing the OP who said people know you're on mounjaro if you lose a lot of weight, because people never lost a lot of weight before the jab

I start 7.5mg this week. It's a very slow journey up to 15mg and the promise of improvement in symptoms!

I know people who have stayed on 2.5 for months, but it didn't work for me and lots of other people, the 5 was brilliant for the first 2-3 weeks but then was wearing off after a couple of days. Hoping the 7.5 works!

JusteanBiscuits · 06/09/2024 14:42

Mounjaroooooh · 06/09/2024 14:30

OK, I haven't seen any on the thread I go on but yeah I agree, if you need to lie then you shouldn't be taking it.

I'm 9 weeks in and have lost 27 lbs, 12 of that was in the first 2 weeks though, and I'm about to go us to 7.5mg as the suppression is non existent now

There are examples in the threads of people who are NOT overweight taking it and admitting to lying to continue to lose weight or not gain it.

This has led to supply issues for similar drugs before. I will be on it for life - or rather until they come up with a better drug for me - as evidence shows it helps with the symptoms of the adrenal tumours I have. 8 weeks in I haven't seen much affect from it personally, but I was warned I probably wouldn't until I reached the 15mg and possibly even 20mg.

SilenceInside · 06/09/2024 14:30

No one is advocating for anyone to lie and to fraudulently obtain a prescription for a treatment that isn't suitable for them. Providers should be doing everything they can to prevent that. Personally I would always (and have) challenge anyone on a thread who states they are doing that.

People who have been using the treatment for a long period of time and are now under a BMI of 30 will continue to be able to have the prescription until they reach an agreed target weight in the healthy range.

JusteanBiscuits · 06/09/2024 14:27

Mounjaroooooh · 06/09/2024 14:23

I'd still be overweight with a BMI of 30 so I'll still be taking it until I get to my goal weight, as long as the Zavamed keep prescribing it for me

It's hard to be on any sort of diet and build muscle mass irrespective of whether there is a medical intervention or not.

It's even harder if you don't have the added benefit of testosterone.

Lean muscle gain requires a lot of dedication to exercise. Even muscle maintenance does too.

If you're in a calorie deficit then you are using whatever stores of energy your body has. This is fat in this instance.

I think people also forget that to be lugging around well over 100kg of fat every single day you have got to have the muscle mass to accomodate those movements. I've probably got a higher muscle mass than someone else my age who's never breached 70kg.

Losing some of that muscle mass on balance with losing fat in the grand scheme of things is no bad thing.

Nobody who is taking mounjaro is taking it to go below a healthy BMI, it won't be prescribed to them. Presuming they can still walk and move at that healthy BMI, they can work on building muscle mass through lean gaining then. Nobody who is morbidly obese is going to do their joints any good, especially at 27 stone, if they start muscle building exercises on top of the weight they are already carrying.

So losing muscle mass should not be a deterrent for losing weight whether that's through diet and exercise or with medical intervention. Many of us won't have a later in life to have any health outcomes from if we don't drop the weight now.

2 whole stone? Ok then. I’m not sure how you’d distinguish between water, fat and muscle.

Apologies I read it wrong, I didn't realise it was over 2 months. But I stand by big losses in the first week is unlikely to be fat/muscle!

W0tnow · 06/09/2024 13:59

Mounjaroooooh · 06/09/2024 13:54

Nah, it won't be muscle, probably won't even be fat yet, mostly water weight. I lost 8lbs in my first week, I know that wasn't fat or muscle

If we have a bmi of 45 and have T2 are we allowed to be a bit more concerned that so many women are lying about their weight to get these injections online? You just need to read the threads to see many on bmi of 30 admitting they lied and worried they won't continue to get it from their supplier soon.

Maybe the NHS should be the only way to get them through prescribing them and monitoring them in person by actually weighing patients. As it is some regions won't prescribe them and others have 2 year wait lists.

To be honest I think you need to give your head a wobble. BMI 30 IS obese. It’s an abnormal BMI, it’s class 1 obesity. At BMI 45, you might be class 3 obese, but 30 is obese nonetheless. I hate this competitive fatness about weight loss injections, just because someone had the wherewithal to do something about their obesity as soon as they became obese, doesn’t mean they’re less deserving of treatment. Just because you are significantly obese, doesn’t mean you’re more deserving of treatment. Your attitude is weird.

Losing weight and increasing her life expectancy, that sort of long term impact?

What are the risks associated with it then? List them out

All medications carry risks and cause side effects. It would be stupid to think they know everything about this drug and its long term effects, the studies simply don't cover enough to say that. The studies are also not necessarily reflective of real life when people outside the target groups using it, with BMI below the minimum, and people staying on it long term which isn't the intended way to use it, but I've seen talked about on here. Risk versus benefits changes based on the risk for specific groups. People should make health decisions with all the facts and shouldn't be deciding they're happy to use this based upon the idea that its magically risk free. Long term consequences are still largely an unknown and there is nothing wrong with acknowledging that. The answer may be there's no major long term negatives, or it may not, we won't know that for sure until 30 to 40 years down the line. All sorts of drugs get approved that are later found to have long term health consequences that result in the drug getting pulled from the market. Pharmaceutical companies have faced and been beaten in class actions bought due to failure to disclose known dangerous side effect.

@EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness I find it really sad that you feel like you haven't
earnt the weight loss, you didn't deserve the weigh gain in the first place. You don't need to do 15 hours in a gym every day to earn weight loss.

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 06/09/2024 13:40

HappyShake · 06/09/2024 08:28

Would some people have the same attitude to those with MH issues using medication? Would they think the person is taking the easy route rather than eg exercise, mindfulness, CBT?

Also a comment by a pp about those around BMI of 30 lying to get the drugs - so what? If there's no supply issues what difference does it make to you? BMI of 30 is still in the obese category (27 for some ethnic groups) and associated health risks. We've really lost sight of what a normal size should be.

Lots of people think that way about medication for depression and anxiety.
Whether the lying matters will depend on the reason for the cut off. It may be that that is the point at which it's considered the risks associated with taking the drug are not justified by the potential positive outcomes from taking it. Use of medication is always a case of weighing the risks versus the benefits, at some weight the risks at a population level may outweigh the benefits at a population level.

Similar to those having gastric bands. Well done but it’s certainly not using the same degree of will power than those who’ve done it naturally.
I put on 2 stone through illness and meds. I’ve lost a stone but struggling to loose the rest. Feel guilty saying this but it’s galling to see how easy it is for some using mounjaro etc but the rest of us don’t have that option.
