Wedding guest dress - it’s cream

But it’s covered in polkadots, does this make it acceptable?

love this dress and the lady in the shop described it as the ‘perfect’ wedding guest dress but obviously she wants to sell it. I just keep thinking it’s a lot of cream.

It’s a lovely dress and no one will mistake you for the bride.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 05/09/2024 08:29

I think you look amazing in the polka dot dress, it's not at all bridal and I can't see that it would stand out in photographs, especially with a black jacket or wrap. Not keen on the blue one.

Anonymouslyposting · 05/09/2024 08:23

I think both dresses are beautiful. You could probably get away with the cream one but I just wouldn’t for a wedding, yes it’s probably fine but why skate close to the line when there are so many lovely dresses that aren’t borderline. The blue dress is lovely, go with that if you can get it.

Duckfoot123 · 05/09/2024 08:19

I dunno, does every photo have to be about the bride? Half the fun after the event is looking at the guests. 'Spotting' who's who, if you will. Back in my day....😂......weddings were about people who loved the couple coming together to celebrate the wedding.
Madness 😂

itzthTtimeGib · 05/09/2024 08:19

I think it’s a gorgeous dress, however, of alllllllllllll the dresses in the world, why not pick one that doesn’t make you worry about how the bride (or guests) might feel?

badgerpatrol · 05/09/2024 08:19

DGPP · 05/09/2024 06:41

Honestly, don’t ask a bunch of random people on the internet. It’s lovely and if you feel good in it and your husband likes it, it’s a winner. I think you look great

You look lovely and it's perfect for a wedding.

Unfortunately there are some new people on MN (maybe they are men) who like nothing more than be nasty to every poster like it's their job.

Ignore them, enjoy the wedding!

Duckfoot123 · 05/09/2024 08:15

Wedding etiquette is bonkers if people think you'd upstage the bride or ruin photos. It's lovely and you look great in it. Are we not allowed to look good at a wedding? In the big group photos everyone but the couple are just crammed in anyway.
Shuffles off muttering mad cat lady style 😂

But somebody somewhere will think it's a bad choice so best choose something else to avoid any drama

DottoTrain · 05/09/2024 08:14

Re any criticisms of dresses etc - I'd ignore all this, everyone has different styles and you need to wear something you like. You asked about appropriateness which is the thing to look at sentiments about here.

Personally I think it's fine but if you are not totally sure you may feel more comfortable on the day in the blue as it won't even be a 'thing' to remotely worry about. Both are fab x

BinsinBonson · 05/09/2024 08:12

Agree with pps saying if you have any doubt, don’t.

DP talked me out of my doubts over wearing a cream dress to a wedding when I was a wedding newbie, and I spent the whole event self-consciously swathed in a black pashmina hoping I’d got away with it. To my horror, the dress appeared as a wedding dress in a soap! Nearly twenty years later, and threads like this bring me out in a cold sweat as it all comes back.

If you’re going to worry, it really isn’t worth it. Pick something safer and enjoy the day.

Youmwarayoum · 05/09/2024 06:57

It’s a beautiful dress but I still wouldn’t wear it to a wedding. Anyone who wears an overly white or cream dress to a wedding is very much a look at me person IMO. It’s only one colour to avoid so not hard to do.

You look lovely though, and I would scrap the black shoes for grey. Black is too harsh with the dress.

I'm afraid I agree OP. My mother wore a dress with jacket that was the same off white material as my wedding dress. Granted there was a small black trim and she wore a hat rather than a veil but in wedding photos it was obviously too close in colour.

We've always had a difficult relationship and even the shop manager gently told her that it wasn't the best colour for a wedding. But she wanted it so that was that!

urbanbuddha · 05/09/2024 07:54

I’m with your DH and the shop lady on the blue dress. It’s inoffensive, but it does nothing for you and might make you look a bit pallid (I don’t know - I can’t see you properly!). The other dress really highlights your figure.

Yes... it's a bit 'daywear' in style though probably not in fabric. Depends maybe on the type of wedding. It'd probably look ok accessorised but it's a bit pale and bland.

Apolloneuro · 05/09/2024 08:08

It’s not about competing. I think the photographer who posted that the colour draws the eye to it in photos is correct. If you think about average, large group wedding shots, female guests are in various colours, male guests usually in blue or grey suits and the bride in white stands out.

sunsetsandboardwalks · 05/09/2024 08:06

If you have to ask then no, it's not suitable.

As have PP said, it's not about looking bridal but about standing out in photos and at the event. There are so many other colours to choose from - pick one of them instead.

SectionState · 05/09/2024 08:02

It’s absolutely fine. But I was never a diva bride. There are some egotistical types (bride and guests) who might bizarrely think you are competing and get huffy. But if the bride is a decent sort then go for it.
It was important to me that my guests were happy. I couldn’t care less what they wore.

I don't get it, I really wouldn't give a shit about someone else turning up
in an actual wedding gown to my wedding. The dot one is nicer but I agree both are a bit middle aged grumpy for me. I don't know what you look like or age but you have a lovely figure, nice hair etc so I suspect your fashion sense is putting years on you. Try some stuff a bit trendier? Out of these tho I'd choose the dots, you do look nice in it despite it not being my taste

It’s nice that you’re the cool girl and everything, but what part of this is about you not caring what guests would wear?

Sunshineclouds11 · 05/09/2024 08:00

It's not about it looking bridal but the colour.

Lovely dress, for the races. Does it come on any other colours?

I don't like the blue one.

Deadringer · 05/09/2024 08:00

I think the Polka dot one is lovely and looks fabulous on you. The blue one is very dull imo.

Vergeofbreakdown23 · 05/09/2024 07:59

Thehonestbadger · 05/09/2024 07:14

@Fairyliz 😂 it’s me wearing it but I’ve had two kids so I can promise you it do have wobbly bits it’s just a flattering cut.

So I’m gonna share my favourite dress of the day but neither DH nor the shop lady seemed to like it (it’s light blue)

Comparing the two the cream one definitely suits you better, but they are both beautiful.
The cream with a tailored jacket black heels and clutch bag is perfect wedding attire, mind you so is the blue 😂 sorry not really helping much am I 😂
I think the cream xx 👍

usernother · 05/09/2024 07:56

Dress is lovely and looks great on you. Perfect for a wedding.

usernother · 05/09/2024 07:55

onfiree · 05/09/2024 06:39

No, it’s definitely not the perfect wedding guest dress. Firstly it’s a bit boring. It’s giving workwear and it definitely looks too close to white. You need to remember that photos may be taken in different lighting that makes it look more white too.

I think there’s hundreds of dresses out there that would look better, and also not potentially cause annoyance

I don't know anyone who'd wear that to work.

urbanbuddha · 05/09/2024 07:54

I’m with your DH and the shop lady on the blue dress. It’s inoffensive, but it does nothing for you and might make you look a bit pallid (I don’t know - I can’t see you properly!). The other dress really highlights your figure.

Geminijust · 05/09/2024 07:54

Maybe I'm out of touch but I had no idea white/cream at a wedding was such a big no no unless it was long/lacy and basically looked like a wedding dress. That looks nothing like a wedding dress! I'm now cringing as I wore a cream shift dress to a wedding 25 years ago. I had black accessories (shoes/bag/hat) and looked nothing like the bride, who actually wasn't wearing white as I recall. Pretty sure my friend wore a cream trouser sut too. They're still speaking to us 🤣 Is black a no no too? I wore a black & white dress to another wedding, oh god.......

blahblahblah24 · 05/09/2024 07:51

It's nice. Not remotely bridal.

Alongthepineconetrail · 05/09/2024 07:51

The style suits you but it's more of a races day dress than a wedding guest dress. Is it available in another colour?

Imustgoforarun · 05/09/2024 07:51

It’s absolutely fine. It has huge black spots on it!! Add a bright pink wrap, shoes and bag and you will look great. Not like a bride at all. Can’t stand this fuss that some people (women as men don’t care) have over white.

men don’t have this problem with looking like the groom!!
