Wedding guest dress - it’s cream

But it’s covered in polkadots, does this make it acceptable?

love this dress and the lady in the shop described it as the ‘perfect’ wedding guest dress but obviously she wants to sell it. I just keep thinking it’s a lot of cream.

Since when does it matter what the royal family do @Nobodywouldknow Confused

And of course it's cream - the fact that it has black splodges all over it doesn't change the colour!

Well they are the very definition of outdated and rigid so if they think it’s okay I can’t see why it wouldn’t be.

Well seeing as the royal family don’t have an issue with it, yes it is. And it’s not even cream or white - it just happens to have cream in it. With a large black pattern.

It was actually a yellow dress if it’s the same one I’m thinking of.

It's hardly "insanely outdated and rigid" to say that you don't wear cream as a wedding guest 😂

Mumsnet invariably has insanely dated and rigid views on what people should wear to weddings.

OP, the dress is absolutely fine and you look great in it.

Growlybear83 · 05/09/2024 09:05

I think the dress is lovely, and perfect for the wedding. I would wear it with a lightweight black jacket, black bag, and the black shoes that you're wearing in the photo. My mum wore a cream and black dress to our wedding and she looked perfect.

RoachFish · 05/09/2024 09:02

The polka dot dress is quite cartoon-y as someone else pointed out. The cut if also very unfashionable and the colour washes you out slightly. I think the blue colour is much more flattering on you and unpatterned dresses are generally speaking more elegant, although the style isn't saying wedding guest. I love the light blue one a previous poster recommended, something like that will make you look much more classy and with your lovely figure you can really pull something like that off.

Sinisterdexter · 05/09/2024 09:01

Please wear a dress with some oomph.
You've a lovely figure, don’t hide it.

pinkducky · 05/09/2024 09:00

I wouldn't have noticed at all on my wedding day, but if you had sent me this prior to ask if it was ok I'd probably say no it's too close. No one would mistake you obviously but some people would gossip and mutter about it on the day (my mum being one!) and I just wouldn't want that going on on the day and inevitably afterwards!

JanefromLondon1 · 05/09/2024 07:19

They're both middle aged and safe. The cut of the first one is awful.

Still blue, what about this? Bit more on trend.

I love that one, much more interesting than the other two.

Octopies · 05/09/2024 08:56

Wear a darker coloured cardigan/blazer over the top for photos and stand at the back if you're worried, then it's visually the equivalent to almost every man who'll be there dressed in a standard issue white shirt and a darker coloured suit jacket! Unless you're in the main wedding party, you're only likely to be in one or two of the photos and won't be in the front row where your lower half will be visible. I've been to loads of weddings and never heard any chunterings when the ladies have worn patterned off white dresses or blazers/cardis.

I think the polka dot dress would look lovely with a wide waist belt.

Nobodywouldknow · 05/09/2024 08:55

There’s pics of Kate Middleton wearing full
on cream outfits to other people’s weddings so it seems the wedding photographers might be able to cope. Unless you’re close family of the bride or groom, you’re hardly going to be in many pictures anyway are you? There’s usually only one or two whole group shots of all guests.

I couldn't agree more!

Although OP I prefer the blue dress!

Coffeeandchocolate12 · 05/09/2024 08:53

I think it’s lovely. I can’t really understand this insistence of avoiding anything that has white/cream.
At my wedding my mum wore white, my mother-in-law wore cream, my cousin wore cream. All looked fabulous. Why should I be annoyed by it?

AbigailisPartiedOut · 05/09/2024 08:53

The polka dot one is lovely and perfectly acceptable for a wedding. The blue one says knock off kate Middleton to me. Sorry!

FuckThePoPo · 05/09/2024 08:50

Only Kate Middleton wears those kinds of dresses surely??? I mean they aren't awful or anything but idk they are very staid in my opinion. Which means nothing so crack on 🤣

DillDanding · 05/09/2024 08:47

Just saw the blue dress OP. Wear the polka dot! It looks lovely on you. The pale blue looks dowdy and unflattering.

Nobodywouldknow · 05/09/2024 08:46

TENDTOprocrastinate · 05/09/2024 06:48

Nope. Find another colour. I’d be a bit annoyed if I was the bride.

Ffs so you can’t have cream or white anywhere on your clothing? Is there a reason why? Do you think someone will mistake this polka dot dress for a bridal gown?

Sharptonguedwoman · 05/09/2024 08:46

Maybe put a smart back jacket over the top? End of problem. Unless you are in the bridal party, you are unlikely to be in the same formal photos.

Much prefer OP's blue dress, in a smaller size it would look amazing

DillDanding · 05/09/2024 08:44

It’s fine. Not remotely bridal.

Neither of these dresses is particularly feminine, sexy or fun. To me they both scream lack of confidence as if the wearer is trying to cover up and hide or prudishness. The second dress looks positively laced-up and Victorian. Unleash your frivolity, enjoy the opportunity to dress up and don’t downplay your wonderful figure.

Since when should wedding guest attire be 'sexy'?ConfusedHmm ... that's about the one think you might get 'judged' for!

No, it’s definitely not the perfect wedding guest dress. Firstly it’s a bit boring. It’s giving workwear and it definitely looks too close to white. You need to remember that photos may be taken in different lighting that makes it look more white too.

I think there’s hundreds of dresses out there that would look better, and also not potentially cause annoyance

Workwear 😂😂😂😂
