Wedding guest dress - it’s cream

But it’s covered in polkadots, does this make it acceptable?

love this dress and the lady in the shop described it as the ‘perfect’ wedding guest dress but obviously she wants to sell it. I just keep thinking it’s a lot of cream.

Well I was planning to wear the following dress to a wedding 🤔 I was thinking fushcia sandals and perhaps a gold bag. The bride and groom are quite alternative so it seemed very appropriate but I'm now wondering if lots of guests will be tutting at my lack of respect? 😬

Regardless of the colour debate I think the spots really draw the eye, if there's group photographs that dress will stand out for sure.

Someone wore cream to my wedding and it was definitely commented on by other guests.

How sad. You go to a wedding which is supposed to be a joyous happy occasion and spend time remarking on someone else's choice of dress. Unless it was completely outlandish I think you probably had a guest problem not a dress problem.

My sister wore a cream suit to my wedding in the 80s and it never entered my head to be offended. People need to chill out these days 😀

I am glad I got married well over twenty years ago. People have got so precious about all this. When I got married there was never a sense of it being just about the bride and groom. Guests mattered too. Which is how it should be.

SectionState · 05/09/2024 10:05

I feel sorry for people who struggle to identify who the bride is on the wedding day and get all confused by the guests wearing cream. If they can’t tell who the bride is, maybe they shouldn’t even be there.

@Fairyliz 😂 it’s me wearing it but I’ve had two kids so I can promise you it do have wobbly bits it’s just a flattering cut.

So I’m gonna share my favourite dress of the day but neither DH nor the shop lady seemed to like it (it’s light blue)

I’m with your DH on this one. It’s fine, but just fine. The style of the first one looked much nicer on you.

Wedding Photographers hate it

Edited

I used to assist a wedding photographer. He was fine with it. The day we realised that two ladies with identical dresses were next to each other in photos was interesting though 🤣

Op there are some bitter people on here who would tell you that you looked crap in anything if it made them feel better about themselves. It's a lovely dress. You feel nice in it. And it's definitely nothing like a wedding dress!! No sensible bride would bat an eyelid.

isthereaway · 05/09/2024 09:36

OP, you would look lovely in a potato sack! I think the big polka dot dress is lovely, but if you wear it you won't be relaxed on the day or get use of it after. The blue dress is fine, but it's a little staid. Do you have time to look again?

urbanbuddha · 05/09/2024 09:33

As @Sinisterdexter says, where’s the oomph?

With the bride.
The one “rule” of dressing for weddings is ‘don’t upstage the bride’.

I’m not alluding to sluttiness but sexiness. Pippa Middleton looked sexy at her sister’s wedding but wasn’t tarty.
You know what I mean so why be so combative (I’m not your sole adversary this morning).
As @Sinisterdexter says, where’s the oomph?

I never really understood the furore surrounding Pippa at the wedding, she looked perfectly ok but the response was off the scale madness - to me anyway. I would never have described her look as sexy though

HappyThread · 05/09/2024 09:32

You look.absolutely stunning in the Cream polka dots dress but it does look very, very light in colour.

Sorry, but thE blue dress doesn't look that great to me. It's very plain..

You do look gorgeous but I think for weddings just stay away from white or cream. It's not worth going and feeling self conscious or worrying if you're being judged by others! Although if you know the bride well you could text her and ask what she thinks, I've done that before and the bride appreciated it and said it was fine. I changed my mind anyway, and then brides SIL turned up in white lace!!!

cadburyegg · 05/09/2024 09:28

I don't think you should wear it, sorry.

Never, but the aim of wedding guest attire shouldn't be sexiness, should it? And I didn't say 'not feminine'... that's always a choice for each individual.

Agree. Don't think I've ever thought is this outfit sexy enough for the occasion. Classy/smart/casual yes, sexy no.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/09/2024 09:26

WearingMyHardHat · 05/09/2024 09:20

@ErrolTheDragon Since when did women stop being feminine and sexy because they are at a wedding?

Funny how no one on MN claims wearing black to a funeral is a silly social construct that no one follows anymore

Of course it's a social construct, not all cultures wear black to funerals. ConfusedAnd increasingly in the U.K. people are being specifically asked to not wear black, or to wear bright colours.
Even if you're not told that, it's now generally viewed as fine to wear sober colours eg navy, grey, not just black.

nicky2512 · 05/09/2024 09:17

I think it’s a beautiful dress. It looks brilliant on. And it’s perfect for a wedding. Just my opinion!

sunsetsandboardwalks · 05/09/2024 09:06

It's hardly "insanely outdated and rigid" to say that you don't wear cream as a wedding guest 😂

It’s literally one colour to avoid. Just one colour. There’s nothing wrong with having cream or white in a dress but if it is overly so, just avoid it. It’s not that hard!

Funny how no one on MN claims wearing black to a funeral is a silly social construct that no one follows anymore yet when it comes to white, you get half of MN being all cool about it - yet I bet vast majority of them wouldn’t wear white / cream themselves.

RollerRunner · 05/09/2024 09:14

You look amazing in both dresses and they are both lovely dresses.

Nobodywouldknow · 05/09/2024 09:13

Youmwarayoum · 05/09/2024 09:11

It was actually a yellow dress if it’s the same one I’m thinking of.

No, there was one from 2014 where she was in cream. Not Meghan’s wedding.

Goldengirl123 · 05/09/2024 09:13
