Would you have your own bedroom if you had space

So a friend of friend is moving house and she has said that the main bedroom which is en suite and has a teeny balcony is going to be her room. She's having a dressing table and fitted wardrobes and the bathroom is hers alone. Her husband is taking a bedroom across the landing next to one of her sons and is sharing a bathroom with him. (Other children are up on next floor).

Would you if you could 🤣

As a widow I have my own room, and will never share my bed again (except with the dogs). However I loved sleeping next to my husband, and will miss him forever.

I had two relationships where we slept in separate bedrooms and both ended as we lost a connection and became more like flatmates. I vouched to never date a man who can't share a bed with his partner again.
We have a spare bedroom we use if either or us can't sleep. But wouldn't have a permanent setup like this again.

mondaytosunday · 04/09/2024 08:09

No, but I'd love my own hobby room. Own bathroom too.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 04/09/2024 08:07

I don't think it would benefit us much to sleep separately but I did mention the possibility to DP a couple of times and he wasn't receptive 😄

I guess I'm lucky though as we rarely impact each other's sleep. I hardly sleep so am up a lot of the night, lights on, wandering about, making 'in pain' noises but DP just sleeps through it all. On the rare occasions I wake him, he's fine about it and drops straight back off to sleep.
He occasionally snores so I wake him and tell him to stop/roll over, which he does. He also works 2 night shifts a week so I get those to myself.

I've ended relationships due to snoring - I can't bear it. If DP suddenly became a bad snorer I'd 100% be asking for separate rooms.

TheNoonBell · 04/09/2024 08:07

I have one and I love it, DH is a light sleeping fidgeter and snores. We both sleep much better since we did it.

He always brings me a cup of tea in the morning and joins me in bed for a bit.

Pipecleanerrevival · 04/09/2024 08:03

I like sharing with dh.

BananaGrapeMelon · 04/09/2024 08:01

We always start the night off in our bedroom, but I move to the spare room if I'm not sleeping well. That's the perfect solution IMO.

Alpolonia · 04/09/2024 07:58

In a heartbeat.

I’ve never had my own bedroom that I could decorate just for me. Always shared with sibling, then room in shared houses, then with DH.

Copperoliverbear · 04/09/2024 07:51

100%

Andthereitis · 04/09/2024 07:49

We have a spare room which he uses when I snore badly or he's unwell. I've woken up alone today which is nice as I can piss about on my phone before getting up and making coffee without disturbing him.
We always start out in the same bed though.

Vettrianofan · 04/09/2024 07:40

If there was space, definitely. DH has had a CPAP machine for years.

notatinydancer · 04/09/2024 07:38

We have separate rooms. We both sleep so much better.
Sometimes we share if we have guests , I hate it.
I'm such a light sleeper and I'm awake a lot in the night.

poptake · 04/09/2024 07:36

But yes I like sharing a bed! So long as it's a good size!

poptake · 04/09/2024 07:35

We manage this by DH having the 4th bedroom as his "man cave" (Envy hate the term) but yes all his memorabilia, gaming etc. I have the downstairs office which is kitted out with all my favourite things, posters etc. And whilst we share the main bedroom, the en suite is mine, he uses the main bathroom, something he offered when our house became over run with men 😂 (we have sons!)

EnterFunnyNameHere · 04/09/2024 07:34

No, I like sharing bed with my husband, but appreciate how lucky I am that a) we have room for a super king bed and b) we both sleep reasonably well, or at least, if one of us has a bad night it's quiet (no snoring or flailing around).

I don't think it's any kind of death knell for a relationship either way, people should do what suits them as a couple and surely being well rested leads to greater happiness!

Didimum · 04/09/2024 07:29

No. I love sharing with DH, but couples should do what works for them if they have the luxury.

Frowningprovidence · 04/09/2024 07:27

Yes. My retirement aim is to have my own bedroom right next to DHs.

I am a much tidier person than him which means I feel slighlty down the whole time I am in our bedroom. I know could just pick up after him but I would then resent that too. He also snores and our weight difference is big so it's hard to get a comfy bed.

sangriaandsunshineplease · 04/09/2024 07:20

My problem isn't sharing a bed with DH but the bedroom itself. I always had my own room as a child and the one thing I've struggled with living with DH or with a previous boyfriend was the sense of not having my own sanctuary just how I wanted it. I love DD's room in our house so, eventually, might get that set up as my space but still sleep in our room.

Boredlass · 04/09/2024 06:54

No way. I like cuddling. I wouldn’t feel as close and it would feel like I was living with a flat mate than a husband.

PearTreeBoat · 04/09/2024 06:51

I wouldn't want separate bedrooms but I do like separate duvets as I like to get tangled up in mine and don't sleep well having to share it

AlisonDonut · 04/09/2024 06:49

I've had my own bedroom for over 10 years now - neither of us ever slept properly in one bed so when the spare bedroom was redone I moved right in.

When we bought a house in france we went for 3 bedrooms, one for each of us and one for when the cat won't move off one of the beds.

Just kidding, we didn't have a cat at the time, he just turned up here and decided to never leave. It was originally for family and friends to stay in.

PayYourselfFirst · 04/09/2024 06:45

Own room here
Absolute bliss !

sesquipedalian · 04/09/2024 06:40

Ponderingwindow · 04/09/2024 04:32

I like sharing a bedroom.

my dream house has 2 en-suites for the master bedroom and separate closets.

I’m absolutely with you, Ponderingwindow. I’m very happy to have a cuddle with my DH before we fall asleep (even though he snores) and I really wouldn’t want not to share a bed, but I would love my own bathroom!

Zanatdy · 04/09/2024 06:29

Friend of mine and her DH have had separate rooms for years, majority of their 20 odd year marriage. She likes light, electronics / screens and he likes quiet, dark and to read a book. They are perfectly happy.

OnlyYellowRoses · 04/09/2024 06:27

God no! I know it works for lots of people but for me personally if we started sleeping separately it would announce the death of our marriage.
We're very tactile and go to sleep cuddled up. Once we've dropped off we then face away from each other but we'll still be touching feet or holding hands.
