Would you have your own bedroom if you had space

So a friend of friend is moving house and she has said that the main bedroom which is en suite and has a teeny balcony is going to be her room. She's having a dressing table and fitted wardrobes and the bathroom is hers alone. Her husband is taking a bedroom across the landing next to one of her sons and is sharing a bathroom with him. (Other children are up on next floor).

Would you if you could 🤣

We have separate rooms and I love it! The reasons are as follows:

  • DH snores which prevents me from sleeping
  • We go to bed and get up at slightly different times due to work schedules so would disturb each other
  • i like to sleep in silence, DH likes to fall asleep to podcasts
  • I like to be cosy with hot water bottle in autumn/winter but DH finds it too hot
  • I have IBS in the mornings and disturb DH by being back and forth to the loo
  • i like to have a room filled with my clothes, hair stuff, makeup, mirror, dressing table, etc whereas DH likes to be in a very uncluttered room with just a bed and his clothes in a wardrobe
  • probably other reasons I’ve forgotten

And our sex life is better now we don’t share a room when sleeping.

We still share a room on holiday but that’s different as you’re not getting up for work etc. and it’s all a different routine. I can manage with earplugs for the snoring for a few nights.

I do. My husband sleeps in the main bedroom all the time, and keeps his clothes in there. During the week I sleep in the little spare bedroom, which is decorated to please me, and at weekends I go in the main room. The third bedroom is my dressing room, with all my clothes and my dressing table. The advantage of this is that if anyone comes to stay they can go in the spare bedroom without me losing access to my stuff. The dressing table is also where we dry clothes when it rains, so the rest of the house doesn’t feel like a laundry.

This needs to be a vote...

Kind of scary (for me at least) how many people don't actually want to sleep with their partner.

Mainoo72 · 04/09/2024 12:14

Yes I already do. Absolutely love it. I sleep so much better.

KreedKafer · 04/09/2024 12:09

I'd rather have my own little living room than my own bedroom.

We don't 'go to sleep cuddling' (I'd actually hate that) but I generally find it easier for either of us to initiate an impromptu shag when sharing a bed. Also we both like to read in bed and listen to the radio together and chat.

SilverBranchGoldenPears · 04/09/2024 12:08

With my ex in a heartbeat (and we did sleep separately for years) with my DH never. He is my cuddly security blanket. I adore him next to me 🥰

Beforetheend · 04/09/2024 12:04

We have the space but we still choose to sleep together.

We each have a hobby room so we

RuthW · 04/09/2024 12:02

Yes if we weren't lucky enough to have our own houses

sunburnandsangria · 04/09/2024 12:01

No. The 5min before we fall asleep is the only 5min of the day that we communicate.

WeRateSquirrels · 04/09/2024 10:15

We have the space but haven't succumbed yet - if his snoring gets worse I may decamp. My own bathroom is non negotiable though.

Cuppa2sugars · 04/09/2024 10:14

i have my own bedroom, i couldn’t stand being squashed or being kept awake in any way any more. i wake in the night and have to put my ipad on and laugh out loud to stupid stuff i watch. We are as bad as each other in the night. i only sleep with oh if really necessary.

Kokomjolk · 04/09/2024 10:08

No, but we do have a large bed and separate duvets. And usually go to bed at different times. So it wouldn't be worth it, I already sleep perfectly and it's nice to have him there when I wake up even though we do not touch each other at all when asleep. It's also really nice on weekend mornings when the kids come in for a big family cuddle all together.

However when we share a smaller bed at my parents' house, it's not enjoyable. I think I'd rather have two separate single beds than a small double!

AliceMcK · 04/09/2024 10:03

O yes! I’ve already managed to get rid of all DHs belongings in our room, he now keeps everything in his office. If there was room for a bed he’d probably sleep in there if I wanted. We are looking at some renovations, if we can pull it off we will work a way for him to have a bed in his office.

For the most park it’s ok sharing a bed, but I have chronic health issues and he needs to sleep which he can’t do when I’m struggling so having a room he can sleep in would be great.

Feelinadequate23 · 04/09/2024 10:01

yes, I sleep in the spare room Sun-thurs and it's brilliant! Can't beat a good night's sleep. We keep most of our clothes in our bedroom but some of my things in the spare room. We are going to be losing it next year due to a new baby and I think we will really struggle!

FinallyYouSaid · 04/09/2024 09:57

No definitely not. I'd always want to share a bed with dh.

In an absolutely ideal, dream-home, money no object situation...I'd love a master suite.

So a large shared main bedroom with super-king bed, small sofa/sitting area. Shared en-suite. Then two separate dressing rooms off the main bedroom, one each. I'd love to have my own totally personal space for my clothes, dressing table, make up, jewellery etc.

I'm not even that much of a 'girly girl', I don't actually have all that much jewellery or make up as I'm fairly minimal and am more likely to be found in wellies walking the dog on the beach than all done up 😂 But still, would love it.

gannett · 04/09/2024 09:56

I do and I do. Quality of sleep is so important for a healthy relationship. Sleep patterns and body clocks are so individual - I can't sleep properly with someone else in the bed, and DP is such a light sleeper that he'll wake up if someone breathes in the same room or a crack of light gets in. That's not a good combination.

MrsWinkly · 04/09/2024 09:55

Alpolonia · 04/09/2024 07:58

In a heartbeat.

I’ve never had my own bedroom that I could decorate just for me. Always shared with sibling, then room in shared houses, then with DH.

This is me too

MrsWinkly · 04/09/2024 09:52

That is exactly what I dream of (when I can get to sleep despite Dh's snoring) and would happily extend it to be the wing of a house, including work room, bathroom, lounge etc.
I'll keep dreaming!

Always28 · 04/09/2024 09:35

I really love sleeping together so would always want to do that. But would love to also be able to have my own room/bedroom that’s just mine where I can escape to.

housemaus · 04/09/2024 09:33

We have our own offices/hobby rooms and his has a spare bed in - we're both awful sleepers so I think probably 3 nights a week one of us goes in there, but still have 'our' room.

I like our set-up, I don't know that I'd like completely separate bedrooms - I think just because it makes me feel weird that we wouldn't have a shared space? I wish my office was bigger though - I'd love a reading area and bookshelves.

brunettemic · 04/09/2024 09:01

Nope, I’m excellent at sleeping. Plus…what happens if I wake up and want…😉

softmauve · 04/09/2024 08:59

Own room here, love it. The snoring was too much for both of us.

Mustreadabook · 04/09/2024 08:45

No I like sharing a bed but I’d love an on suite dressing room that was all mine, so that I can get ready when I want without disturbing and without someone having opened the curtains next to my clothing drawers before I have clothes on.

vincettenoir · 04/09/2024 08:16

Personally I wouldn’t as me and dp are into our cuddles but I can completely understand why it works for a lot of people and why it’s becoming more popular. It makes a lot of sense especially if one person is a light sleeper.

Doggymummar · 04/09/2024 08:15

Definitely
