Abolishing single person CT discount

It won’t affect me, but this is really crap if Labour bring it in. I can’t imagine they will actually, it would affect so many people who already financially struggle from living alone.

AIBU to think this is DM stirring the pot?

I think it's fair that a couple should pay twice what a single person pays

Issue with poll tax was that, within a local authority, the rate was the same for each person. So, Jack and Jill in their multimillion house paid the same rate as Tom and Jane in their tiny flat

But are the people living in their multi-million house actually using much more of the local authority's services than people in the cheaper house? Possibly they are costing the LA less because they might send their kids to private school, or if they need social care they will probably have to fund it themselves.
Maybe a poll tax with an income element is the answer?

That works too!

Ive reported the thread and hope MN will edit it. We’re supposed to be here to support each other as parents, not to wind up and scare each other in order to shit stir politically. Too much of this happening is the world right now and it’s really stressful for people.

While I think it's good to make sure people discuss things in exactly the way one would prefer according to one's views, it was widely reported. I attach a screenshot of the Telegraph although recently even the Telegraph have been a bit sensationalist recently.

Yes you could either add "Debunked" or better still "Daily Mail lying again about CT Discount"

Council tax should be made up of different parts imo.

The first could be linked to income (they have the figures for this anyway through HMRC).

The second based on the area of land your house is located on (again easily calculated from the Ordnance Survey, Land Registry and geospatial mapping (UPRN). Linked to this there should be compulsory registration of currently unregistered land. Imagine all the rich landowners that sit on thousands of hectares.

Thirdly, there needs to be revaluation of property (a terraced house is not the same value everywhere). I think it was the early 90s the last time this was done on a large scale.

This would bring further employment to the Civil Service and in turn more tax revenue for the government.

Further employment to the civil service?? Haven't they got enough to do at the moment?

@Scandiviews1 I know some people use it and I know what those people's agenda is. What I'm seeking to understand is why it's used. Can you explain something g 2 tier you have observed please?

Oh I see. Gotcha. Well I think in this case that we are discussing on this thread, I'm going to use it according to the arguments I've already made above.

the80sweregreat · 04/09/2024 11:46

My son ( 26 and working above minimum wage) could pay the ' poll tax' if that was ever brought in as long as it was fair and not as much as council tax is. It would be a contribution towards local facilities if nothing else. He lives with us and pays keep ( which pays our own council tax !)
I can see why it was scrapped and brought down a government, but maybe the principle of it isn't that bad ( for some anyway )
People would get away with not paying it though so it's not fool proof , but it's controversial too.

LoveRosesClimbing · 04/09/2024 11:44

You just need to add ‘debunked’ to the title or something like that please

LoveRosesClimbing · 04/09/2024 11:43

Irresponsible Daily Mail scaremongering. Not a true story. OP, please could you ask @MNHQ to amend your thread title because this will scare the fuck out of many impoverished single people on here. Please. Multiple posters on these threads who are not realising this is a scare story which lends it legitimacy. Thank you

Bring back poll tax. I always thought that was fair. If you are earning, contribute to the area in which you live.

My father always thought it was fair as well.

I think it had its problems (an understatement). But I can see why it was originally introduced.

Maybe the best idea would be to increase central taxation and councils get a grant from government, everyone gets the same and there's no postcode lottery as now. it's not right that some people get better local services than others. So effectively the direct opposite of what the Coalition and Tory governments were trying to achieve.

But clearly someone living on their own should pay less than a couple, or a family.

It would certainly need a rebrand of name 😂

It's not the DM stirring the pot. Angela Rayner was asked about it, in parliament, on Monday and refused to rule out scrapping the single person discount. Councils are also asking the government to scrap the 5% cap on annual increases.

It's being reported in multiple newspapers. This does not mean it will happen just that Angela Rayner refused to say it wouldn't.

I think you must have missed this thread: https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/money-matters/5156788-council-tax

Totally debunked on the floor of the house. DM like nothing more than creating friction and factions in society.

Thanks I didn't see that one.

So you think electricity, gas etc shouldn't be based on what you use? Maybe get the supermarkets to do single person prices while you are at it.

Every one pays for the electricity and gas they use. But I do get a discount on my water bill, which is right - I use far less than the family of four next door. Cant have a water meter which would mean paying even less, so it is right that my lower usage is reflected in my fees. Just like I produce less rubbish and use fewer local public services. So I pay less which is right. But hey, carry on with ridiculous comments.

BurntBroccoli · 04/09/2024 11:39

I really hope it's just pot stirring. It would affect me hugely!

I have drafted an email to my Labour MP (whom I very much supported during the election).

In addition, abolishing the 25% rebate will affect more women than men as lower earners, single parents and retired single women.

Scandiviews1 · 04/09/2024 11:38

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 04/09/2024 11:36

This is such bullshit. Pensions in the NHS have been consistently eroded over the years. People in full time employment doing essential jobs - like nurses - are having to use food banks. For over a decade, people have fallen far behind private sector pay, with raises of 1% being common. I am sick of right wingers piling on public sector workers - they are not the problem - they keep the country going. That they are some kind of drain is Tory rhetoric at its most toxic.

Private sector pensions aren't underwritten by the taxpayer unfortunately.

Anyway I'm not denigrating public sector workers. I'm denigrating the approach Labour are taking by taking from the most vulnerable in society (pensioners who cannot work to raise more money) and giving to very well paid public sector workers such as train drivers. Who also have a fantastic pension scheme. Reverse Robin Hood. Or a two tier approach.

CherryVanillaPie · 04/09/2024 11:38

I think the discount should increase. At the moment 2 working adults in a household pay 50% each. A single working adult pays 75%

fitzwilliamdarcy · 04/09/2024 11:36

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 04/09/2024 11:30

If you are single with kids you are not a single occupier! Single person discount is for houses where one person lives! And yes, you should pay less than the family of four next door. All utilities should have a single person discount- sole occupiers proportionately pay far more for everything than people in a family.

SPD applies to a single parent of children (i.e. people under 18). It doesn't apply once those children become adults.

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 04/09/2024 11:36

Scandiviews1 · 04/09/2024 09:54

There are groups favoured by Labour (public sector workers who are already paid handsomely with huge pension pots, unions etc) who will get pay rises, and groups that will bear the brunt in order to pay those payrises (pensioners, the private sector, savers). There's no two ways about it and it's a shaky old start by Labour.

Edited

@Scandiviews1 referring to the PM as ‘2Tier’ tells me a lot about you and your political position and values. Could you explain exactly what you mean by the name?

Well I didn't come up with it myself! So Google in this case is your friend. The fact that you know who I mean by 2Tier means you already know though.
