To be flabbergasted, amazed, and perplexed by my friends bean choice

I was recently at a friend’s house and noticed they only had supermarket own brand beans. I was flabbergasted and astonished. It has rocked me to the core.

My friend isn’t short of money. She earns six figures, has a 900k house (mortgaged), has a BMW, and holidays in the Maldives annually.

I was there for lunch. I was expecting bruschetta with cherry tomatoes from the artisan farmer’s market. When she offered me beans on toast, I just couldn’t take it any longer and had to leave. I told her it was because I thought I’d left the hot tub on, but I think she knew it was the beans.

It’s been on my mind ever since, although I’ve tried to forget it. I thought about leaving a four pack of Heinz on her doorstep but not sure she’d take them with the kindess they were intended.

Should I just go no contact or low contact?

This has got to be a wind-up 😂

Sainsbury's own here. They are nice. Though I'm told M&S beans are nicer.

Heinz are expensive & lack flavour.

M&S are the best I can confirm.

ClockwiseHoneysuckle · 02/09/2024 09:38

I hope that at least the toast was made from freshly baked sourdough bread?

RIVERDALEHIGH · 02/09/2024 09:38

Not coffee but Asda own brand decaf tea bags are supreme to any other I've tried!!

Tesco own brand here 🫣

Snap and there's nothing wrong with them. The mixed beans are very nice as well. I'm not a beans snob don't get the fuss over branston beans they all taste the same to me.😂😂😂

Withdrawn at the poster's request

Why bother to comment if that is all you are going to say?

Growlybear83 · 02/09/2024 09:35

I'm sorry, OP. I should imagine that your visit must have been quite traumatic, and left you shaking and crying.

DeanElderberry · 02/09/2024 09:33

I like the Lidl ones - they taste better than Heinz.

vodkaredbullgirl · 02/09/2024 09:32

Now I want beans on toast, with loads of cheese on top 😆

SIL's sister married a multi millionaire - They are so rich that he bought the mansion next to his as they ''Didn't want neighbours''.

He evidently goes ape if she buys anything other than Tesco own brand bleach.

He's got the right idea. I don't want neighbours either.

It is funny!

This.

I’m having a bad time at the mo OP and your post made me smile. Thank you!

Own brand beans have beans and sauce. They still taste like shit but I’d take them over branded beans if I really had to eat them. Branded beans tend to have heaps of sugar in them, can’t stand how overly sweet they taste.

By the by, anyone that’s eating baked beans is massive unreasonable no matter the brand.

also shops own paracetamol and ibuprofen
really cannot see how they could be any different.

same with me i usually get the generic brands of these, why over pay for x brand whn presuming they are mostly the same

Sorry OP, your attempt at being funny has fallen really flat. Maybe make up a thread about Oasis tickets, those seem to be going down a storm.

Yeah, or something like the one last night where the poster’s partner only gave her £250 a month. People were frothing.

mydogisthebest · 02/09/2024 09:20

Sainsbury's own are nice but the best are M&S and they are pretty cheap. I don't mind Heinz but too expensive now and Branston are just revolting

ilovesooty · 02/09/2024 09:18

If I were a friend of someone with this mindset she wouldn't be invited again.

In any case I imagine I'm in a minority in not being able to tell the difference between most brands of baked beans.

Heinz make beans for Aldi, Asda etc....they just put their own label on.

People are so gullible.

they taste totally different, the sauce is vile

@C64 is this a wind up???? if not, then you are a dreadful snob! I have used tesco beans for years! branded everything else but beans and garden peas are all the same!! the beans used to be 3p a tin!!

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 02/09/2024 09:12

Fucking desperate.

It definitely made me realise that 'rich' people are rich for a reason- They are often quite tight with money.

Tesco bleach must be good- oddly, a GP I had says she only ever buys Tesco own brand soluble aspirin for her migraines.

Says it works for her, Tesco soluble aspirin and an anti nauseant, and she's good to go.

She says she never buys Nurofen or branded painkillers as ''A waste of money, and no more effective''.

That's true about the painkillers.

Usually the same active ingredients and sometimes even exactly the same tablets at many times the cost.

Of course Nurofen have many different variations with slightly different specialities to 'add value' but they won't necessarily perform significantly better than a basic ibuprofen tablet.
