‘Has anyone else experienced this?’

Why does this sentence give me the rage?

I just want to type - No you are the only person in the history of forever to ever have this experience’

What sentence gives you the rage?

Expected to able and active, at my age, lots complain of elderly, why’s and hows, I’m 62, I feel cheated by my poor health, and envy those that have better.
No other half, or near sons to help, my parents had better health till mid 70s

They mean “can anyone else reading this relate personally to what has happened to me?” 🙄

they are looking for someone with a shared experience to talk to. 🤷🏼‍♀️

it’s not literally “Am I the only person ever on the planet to have had this sort of experience? “ 🤦‍♀️

well, yeah, obviously! I don't think that needed explaining. I don't think OP ACTUALLY thought anyone posting that was really believed there was a possibility they were the only ones this had ever happened to, because the majority of the posts worded thus are so utterly commonplace you'd have to be a complete idiot ("Has anyone been on holiday to France?" "Does anyone not drive?" to actually query if you were the only one

OP was presumably just pointing out that it's a fatuitous way to start a post. Which I agree, because it is (or at least I also find it) very annoying, and presumably if people have gone to the effort of posting about something they want others to reply, rather than eye-roll and scroll by.

MN is very busy with hundreds of posts a day on the busy threads, therefore it's always better to be as specific as possible if you want helpful responses rather than people jumping on to snark, "no, you're the only person to ever own a cat ever" (or similar).

If you want advice on loneliness maybe start a thread called "I'm really struggling with loneliness" or "how can I stop feeling so lonely?" or "need a hand hold - feeling lonely," not "has anyone else ever felt lonely?"

If they want to complain about the COL or want advice on saving money start a post with "Thread to complain about the COL" or "Who else is really struggling with the COL?" rather than "Is anyone struggling with money?"

If you want tips on buying a house in a particular area of London, start a thread saying that, not "Does anyone live in London?"

Yes it's a bit thread-police-y to complain about how people word their OPs but there have been far more minor/pedantic threads.

why bother wording a post in a way that you hope most people will 'know what you mean,' when you can just....actually write exactly what you mean????

I have been known to get murderous over "at the end of the day" and "it's all good." Also using the word literally when they don't actually mean literally. They just use it for emphasis. Drives me batty.

And "I turned round and said" 😣😁

True, but I'm thinking of the sort of person who says it after almost everything.

I think for some, it's just become a fashionable habit.

It could be a self esteem thing as well. They aren't sure about how articulate they are. But yeah, it can be annoying.

ouch321 · 31/08/2024 22:39

Yeah, a few weeks ago there were multiple variations of "Am I the only person who doesn't love the music of Taylor Swift?"

TheClawDecides · 31/08/2024 22:38

XChrome · 31/08/2024 22:36

Sure, but if it's somebody you don't know well, how are they supposed to know that? There are a lot of stupid people out there, so some people are careful so as not to be misunderstood.

When someone explains something piss simple, and they follow it up with "Does that make sense?"

Yes it does, because I'm not 2 years old with the IQ of a Smartie 😡

BaubleDelight · 31/08/2024 22:34

Yes!!! I also hate people who say, "Only my child could(insert whatever child did here)." Yes you are completely right, only your child,in the entire world, could do that thing you posted on Facebook.Amazing.

thursdaymurderclub · 31/08/2024 22:33

'what it is is!' it really winds me up!

TheClawDecides · 31/08/2024 22:32

Another expression that annoys me is "Are you me?"

No, I'm definitely not you because I went to the toilet and recognised my own knickers 😐

AgileGreenSeal · 31/08/2024 22:31

overgrowntoddler · 31/08/2024 22:07

Ha! well there you go... only you know why to gives you the rage. Maybe it's a you problem rather than those who use it?

Why would you enraged by people seeking support and discourse with those affected by similar experiences?

You must be really intolerant.

I think OP might be the only person to have experienced this 😐

Greytulips · 31/08/2024 22:28

There will be an association somewhere that triggers it

Its not that deep

Or is it?

😀

The ‘Am I pregnant?’ ones.

it’s not literally “Am I the only person ever on the planet to have had this sort of experience? “ 🤦‍♀️

But of course other people can relate. They mean ‘anyone who has experienced this, come and advise’ or whatever. Not ‘has anyone ever’. Of course they have.

Yes I’m intolerant to that but pobody’s nerfect (that’s DH’s fume-inducing phrase 😄).

herecomesautumn · 31/08/2024 22:21

Yes it is annoying

On a par with "am I the only one who [insert mundane, everyday thing or thought]"

I see the culprits of these inanities have turned up on the thread

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 31/08/2024 22:18

Mumistiredzzzz · 31/08/2024 21:48

Hahah I feel the same as so often what to reply 'no, you are the only person ever' 🤣🤣

Sometimes I do if I’m in a bad mood 😆 such a mindless phrase.

5128gap · 31/08/2024 22:17

"Some of these responses are wild" The very use of the word 'wild' annoys me as it conjures up young American MRAs who use more emojis than words. It makes me irrationally angry. To a lesser extent "its not that deep" entitled teens being dismissive now adopted by annoying adults.

pictoosh · 31/08/2024 22:11

I think your adverse reaction to it is particular to you. There will be an association somewhere that triggers it.
It's not a notably cringeworthy phrase.

Crazycatlady79 · 31/08/2024 22:07

I experience rage when anyone uses "the rage" within a sentence.

bakewellbride · 31/08/2024 22:04

I want a baby name that's a bit unique.

Name x is more unique than name y.

Ffs unique is an absolute term. Something is either unique or it's fucking not!

Greytulips · 31/08/2024 22:02

Loving all the explanations ladies, I know what it means!!

It’s cringe worthy.

YABMU

@AgileGreenSeal has it nailed it.

If a way of asking for solidarity and to feel less alone.

Otherwise what is the point of a discussion forum.

It's just a turn of phrase.
