To think we should all boycott John Lewis until they respect their female employees

This is a letter from a female employee of John Lewis's Cheadle branch. John Lewis told its female employees that they have to share toilets and locker rooms with trans identifying men. The employee says this is having a terrible effect especially on colleagues who have experienced trauma relating to men or who have religious reasons to not want to share a space with someone who is the opposite sex.

Ah yes, the predictable ad hominem attacks on other women who have different opinions than you do. Luckily in this country and in this century we’re able to hold and express different views. Why does it need to get so personal?

Absolutely.

Unfortunately John Lewis is morphing away from it's winning formula.
It will go the way of other large dept stores.
I don't agree with them forcing females to share like this esp after the case in Scotland.

What case? I'm Scottish and haven't heard about this.

SoundTheSirens · 29/08/2024 20:30

Do all the people here who are happy to open up female-only spaces to transwomen also believe that Rachel Dolezal is really a black woman or that Stefonknee Wolscht is really a six year old girl?

If not, what’s the difference?

ZiriForGood · 29/08/2024 20:26

ElleWoods15 · 29/08/2024 20:13

Indeed.

And also, can we stop with this ridiculous assertion that trans woman in some way necessarily means sexual predator. It’s offensive.

It's offensive to pretend that men (male people) have any excuse to occupy women's (female people) spaces.

If a male bodied person really had a woman inside their head, they would never decide to encroach on women's space because they would know better.

So yes, any male who feels entitled to use women's spaces is a predator to a degree.

Edit: to be totally clear I am NOT saying sexual predator, I am saying a predator in a broader sense.

Why is the bar set at being attacked?

I don’t want to be in certain spaces in the presence of a penised male. The end. I don’t need a reason why. No matter what their intentions are. My brother and lovely male friends would never hurt anyone (as far as I know). Would I want them to be in any spaces for women if they woke up tomorrow with different gender feels despite being sure their intentions were not nefarious in any way? No. Because their presence may be problematic to some women, for a myriad of reasons.

Why is this such a difficult concept to grasp?

It's 'problematic' for all women and girls because it compromises the comfort, privacy, security and safety of any woman or girl.

And it is problematic for men too who want comfort privacy and security though it does not affect them in the same way or to the same degree in terms of risk to safety.

ClockwiseHoneysuckle · 29/08/2024 20:11

Exactly how much easier do you claim it is? It's not as if anywhere places guards at the doors of women's toilets. Men literally just need to open the doors and walk in.

This is also so disingenuous.

Say you are a woman (doubtful) in the ladies loos with your young daughters and a bloke just walks in...what do you do? Do you just shrug and think 'must identify as a woman' and carry on? No. I am fortunate enough not to have directly suffered from male violence but I would feel extremely threatened, on edge and would get me and my kids out of there. I think all women would.

No different if said bloke was wearing a dress.

Can you tell the rest of us how you can tell the sexual predators from the normal blokes?

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 29/08/2024 20:23

KendraTheVampyrSlayer · 29/08/2024 20:02

Are blokes of all shapes and sizes allowed in those breastfeeding facilities?

There is nothing to say that they’re not. A man was there with his wife at some point when I was there (there wasn’t actually a door , just a wall to separate it so not everyone could see). I get that might not be seen as ideal for some but for me it was fine and a lot better than trying to do it in a crowded cafe

Kath85 · 29/08/2024 20:11

I have no issue with trans women using female facilities considering we have cubicles, they are private. Nothing to do with the voting being a basic right for everyone, give over

Edited

So you get to consent for all women because you have no issue with it? I take it you're also absolutely fine with being filmed by pervs in toilets too? As that happens frequently in female facilities, see my post above. I don't want to be filmed when I'm changing my tampon thanks, just because you want to doesn't mean the rest of us do.

Well 'trans women' retain male rates of violent and sexual offending. These are higher by an order of magnitude than female rates. While not every man who identifies as trans is a sexual offender the rates of offending are a very good reason to keep female spaces single sex. In Darlington a group of nurses is taking the NHS to court because they were forced to share a changing room with a 'trans woman ' He didn't rape anybody but he followed them around and asked them when they were going to get changed. Surely we've all experienced creepy blokes trying to violate boundaries whether it's with words, groping, taking photos, etc. Allowing trans identified men into women's spaces gives those creepy blokes an opportunity they wouldn't otherwise have.

But they didn't use to "open the doors and walk in". Women would protest and would be backed up by other women and staff, and if necessary security guards or the police. Now it's the women protesting who will be vilified, not the men who are invading their spaces.

DuesToTheDirt · 29/08/2024 20:18

BiggerBoat1 · 29/08/2024 19:13

Not caring is not the same as thinking it won’t happen in my workspace. It can happen where I work and that’s fine. I am happy to share space with trans women as I do not consider them to be “men pretending to be women”.

How about Andrew Miller - the Borders butcher who abducted a young girl and took her into his bed "to be motherly," he said, sexually assaulting her of course. What's he, if not a man? Would you like him in your changing room?

Are you happy to share your changing room with any men, or just with transwomen? If you don't want common or garden men in there, why not? What is different about transwomen?

KendraTheVampyrSlayer · 29/08/2024 20:15

Fancycheese · 29/08/2024 19:36

You don’t want to a space with “penised males”, well what about if they’ve had surgery? Is that ok? Somehow I doubt it.

And you don’t want to be in the presence of any men in spaces for women because “their presence may be problematic to some women”. So this is solely an altruistic endeavour to help “some” (undefined) women.

It’s difficult to grasp because I cannot get my head around the uproar it causes when there is genuine harm being done to women. This is a bogey monster under the bed that receives outsized attention on here. I don’t understand it, you all seem to work each other up into a state of apoplexy.

It’s completely pointless posting in these threads full of pitchforks. However I do wonder if any of you have ever actually met or interacted with a person suffering from gender dysphoria. There’s so much ignorance and hatred on display.

This is what men do in mixed sex and women's toilets and changing rooms.

I lost all respect for John Lewis when they shut their Sheffield store down after accepting millions from Sheffield Council to stay open.

Imagine if the suffragettes had said this about the vote! It's to not be bothered when other women fight for all those rights for you and you just reap the benefits, isn't it?

You are aware that 99.9% of men do not need to go through the pretence of lying about their gender identity in order to attack women? They just do it. Honestly you would think that hoards of women were being attacked on a daily basis by men falsely identifying as women. A far, far bigger issue is violence perpetuated by men identifying as men. Why is there not the same uproar there?

Oh here we go, the they'll do it anyway trope. Why bother with any form of safeguarding or security if people will do it anyway? Shall we do away with all checks and balances for people working with children? Have a little think about how much easier allowing men who claim to women into women's spaces makes it for those who wish to enter for nefarious purposes and then have a little think about why single sex spaces were put in place.

Exactly how much easier do you claim it is? It's not as if anywhere places guards at the doors of women's toilets. Men literally just need to open the doors and walk in.

Ah that's nice for you.

ClockwiseHoneysuckle · 29/08/2024 20:09

When everyone has boycotted all the high street stores out of existence, where are you going to shop? Those bastions of exemplary employee relations, Amazon? Or are you all going to go totally self-sufficient?

Elphamouche · 29/08/2024 20:09

It literally doesn’t bother me.

ElleWoods15 · 29/08/2024 20:09

Fortunately, outside of MN, the numbers of gender critical people cutting off their nose to spite their face and boycotting JL is very unlikely to cause JL any issues at all. So I wouldn’t be too worried, those who have posted about not wanting JL to close!

KendraTheVampyrSlayer · 29/08/2024 20:08

lightinthebox · 29/08/2024 19:15

I work for JL and trust me, this is not the issue you think it is. We have male janitors in the changing rooms and no one cares. Stop assuming what colleagues are thinking with no knowledge.

Have you polled every single employee of JL to check they share your views or are you just spouting your opinion?
