To think it’s odd for someone to have their phone on DND for days?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to understand a situation with a friend who’s recently put their phone on Do Not Disturb, and it’s been like this for several days now. We had no major falling out, but communication has been a bit strained. They mentioned being ill and needing some quiet, but it's unusual to not have any communication for this long.

AIBU to think it's a bit odd for someone to keep their phone on DND for such an extended period? Could this be a sign of something more, like needing space or dealing with something personal? I’m trying to respect their space, but I’m also a bit worried. Would appreciate any insights or similar experiences.

What I think is odd is you expecting someone to always be available to respond to calls.

I think people have developed some really strange expectations since social media and mobile phones became a thing...

Thinking everyone should be contactable 24/7 is not healthy.

Your friend is just does not want to be disturbed/has other priorities at the moment. Respect that.

DS lives his entire life with his oho e on dnd, it's infuriating

Planesmistakenforstars · 29/08/2024 17:55

They mentioned being ill and needing some quiet

So they have explained, in effect, why they have done it. You should just leave them be for a bit. I can understand you being worried but I also don't think that "several days" is an "extended period of time."

Fwiw my phone is always on silent, sometimes switched off for a day or two if I forget about it, and not always with me when I go out. But that is normal behaviour for me.

How can you tell whether someone has their phone on DND?

surely you send messages and get no answer, but is there a way to tell if the receiving phone is on DND or not?

I’d assume though even if a phone is on DND they’re still reading the messages, just not being interrupted by constant phone buzzing. I put my dnd on when I’m on nights, but read when I get up 🤷‍♀️

My phone is alalways on silent, I check it semi regularly. Nothing is so urgent I need to answer the phone immediately

This. I refuse to be constantly available. I also get no notifications and am not using Last Seen on WhatsApp.

OneTC · 29/08/2024 17:29

Mine switches DND on sometimes automatically (like when it thinks you've got in a car) and isn't always as good at deciding when to switch it off

ShyMaryEllen · 29/08/2024 17:27

I sometimes put mine on DND when i'm on Zoom or in the theatre/cinema then forget to put it back on. I tend to check messages when I'm on the laptop, as I'm not eating/talking to someone/out when I'm looking at that. My mum has a habit of ringing at inconvenient times and launching into conversation whether it's convenient or not. When I had a landline she would start by saying 'I tried you at home but there was no answer so I rang you on your mobile as I knew you were out.' Er, yes. I'm out - what makes you think I want to chat?

I would leave your friend a message, and she'll get back to you when she's free.

ConflictofInterest · 29/08/2024 17:22

How do you know, does the phone give out a message when it's on DND? Mine is permanently on DND because I worry about it ringing in meetings. I didn't realise it effected other people though. I still get calls and messages through just silently.

Destiny123 · 29/08/2024 17:20

Mine is on 247 I swap between nights and days too often to want some randomer disturbing my inability to sleep..phone contacts can get through if call more than once in a short period of time

alittlebitalexis1 · 29/08/2024 17:18

DH always has his on DND because he gets distracted easily and is now self employed and always home

OneTooFree · 29/08/2024 17:12

Mine is on permanent silent mode and usually dumped on the side in the kitchen or buried at the bottom of my bag.
Most of the time I don't want disturbing whether I'm at home or out and about, as I'm usually either busy or relaxing.
I have all notifications turned off permanently too.

My phone is always on DND and it’s the norm for most people I know.

Mine too. I remember when a phone would sit on a table in the hall and mind it's own business. I do check it and respond but I would feel overwhelmed if I was receiving constant notifications .

Pootle23 · 29/08/2024 15:38

Maybe your friend is like me. You see I have a phone, but, it is for me to use. I don’t pay for it so people can contact me. If I don’t want to deal with it I put it on DND.

It is not personal, it’s called living my life how I want to. I do not have to be on call 24 hours a day for anyone.

SooticaTheWitchesCat · 29/08/2024 15:17

My daughters have their phone on DND most of the time. My DH has his on silent all time. I turn mine on DND in the evenings.

Nobody needs to be contactable at all times if they don't want to be.
She obviously just wants time away from her phone.

AsYouWiiiiiiiiiiiiish · 29/08/2024 14:55

I hate being so available. I often purposely take a while to answer messages and put my phone on DND when burnt out or busy.

Having boundaries around communication and devices is increasingly important these days.

My phone is also always on silent.
I choose when I want to be available to people.

SensibleSigma · 29/08/2024 14:47

My phone is permanently silent. I choose when to check and how urgently I need to respond.

My phone is for me to use, not for other people to be able to access me.

Rory17384949 · 29/08/2024 14:46

I have my phone on silent apart from calls all the time because notifications stress me out - I just check my phone regularly.
If she's going through a difficult time she might just need space , but also it could just be that she's forgotten about it

MoveItOnUp · 29/08/2024 14:44

I sometimes feel that there is an expectation now that we are all available at all times.

Realistically, although it can be frustrating if you're trying to get hold of someone, we need to remember that people need time to themselves. Therefore, I often put my phone on DND (except for my teenagers in case of an emergency).

If someone leaves me an answerphone message I'll ring them back if I need to.

In addition though, I absolutely HATE talking on the phone and would much prefer to send a message!

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 29/08/2024 13:56

I can't imagine noticing if a friend had DND on for a few days!

I don't do instantly contactable for anyone but DP or DD. Anyone else can wait until I'm free before they get message back.

Fedup92 · 29/08/2024 13:24

It's not healthy to be contactable 24/7. Try it sometime, it's very freeing.
Why do you think rates of anxiety and depression have skyrocket since non stop notifications became a thing.

I’m possibly a bit of a dinosaur with my phone. Is it notifications from friends and family that’s driving you nuts? or is it notifications from apps and things. Because I always disable those.

Catza · 29/08/2024 13:43

It's not unusual for me to leave my phone on DND for extended periods of time. Sometimes it is deliberate, sometimes I just forget. I don't get a lot of phone calls anyway but I get fed up with phone notifications from apps etc. If I could only turn it on when I needed to make a call, I honestly would. But I freaked my partner out before by going on holiday and forgetting my phone was on DND.

ScattyHattie · 29/08/2024 13:32

I put my phone on DND a lot as it's the only easy way that seems to silence all the bloody app notifications on my phone. I can still see the WhatsApp/text/call notification pop up so i will get back to people. It just stops it being a distraction when I'm trying to get things done as the vibrate only setting wasn't helping.

MouseofCommons · 29/08/2024 13:28

My teens do this all the time. It drives me potty.
