How would you feel, if your DH bought you a bib?

He bought me an adult pelican bib! He thinks it's hilarious.

It says on it "if you can read this, I haven't had my dinner yet". I do drop food on myself, fair enough, but I just think this isn't funny.

And, given that I'm never going to wear it, a total waste of time, because to send it back, he has to parcel it back up and drive some distance to a post office, because we don't have a post office in our town.

I don't know if my sense of humour is lacking, but I feel offended. Maybe that's too strong a word, I don't know, maybe belittled or like he's thinking I'm not sexy, if that makes sense? Maybe I need to lighten up!

YABU - lighten up, it's just a joke

YANBU - I wouldn't like that either

The latter! And now it's a huge effort to return it. Trudging to the next bloody town to the post office!

Put it in the charity box stuff and drop it off next time you take stuff there.

To be honest dropping food down yourself unless you have a disability (I do and have had periods where I’ve dropped food on myself), is grim.

I’d laugh at the joke but quietly be mortified and would start making an effort to eat at the table again. Perhaps this is a good wake up call to put a bit more pride in yourself again?

AgileGreenSeal · 29/08/2024 09:21

Buy him a nappy

cloudydays2 · 29/08/2024 09:20

Its a joke, you drop food on yourself, he thought he was being funny, we all don't have the same humour. Just don't wear it then, it is really as simple as that. Unless he calls you a baby or makes fun of you constantly I personally don't think that is belittling giving a bib.

abracadabra1980 · 29/08/2024 09:19

I love a man with a bit of banter. Suck it up and don't take it so seriously. You're lucky - he sounds fun to me!

AdiosHombre · 29/08/2024 09:19

If he likes funny jokes, then I’d go on lovehoney and buy him a nice silicone cock extender. "I’ve bought you a surprise Nigel, thought this might spice things up a bit." Only joking I know you love a good giggle!

If he calls your bluff its win win lol

betterangels · 29/08/2024 09:14

Get back to sitting at the table to eat. Dropping food all over yourself must be annoying for you? I definitely wouldn't have bought the bib, I think it's mean. But I also wouldn't find a partner, who dropped food down themselves repeatedly, attractive in the long run.

TicketyBoo11 · 29/08/2024 09:11

Time to make some changes;

  1. Get rid of the knee trays - today !!
  2. turn the tv off
  3. Lay the table, include beautiful linen napkins FOR YOU BOTH (dispenses with lobster bib and still saves the food going down your boobs 😂)
  4. Clear the table off together and then retire to the lounge where the tv can go on and you can watch and chat all night

the next gift you get your hubby has to be a personal, funny one-he’s started something now..😂😂 Get your thinking cap on…

TortillasAndSalsa · 29/08/2024 09:11

Id find if funny if dh did that to me and he would laugh if I did it to him. I said to him id need one for our wedding day meal as u had visions of a tomato soup splattered dress 😂

dottiedodah · 29/08/2024 09:08

Im like you always spilling things down me ,Have a couple of white tops ,always when wearing one of course!Seriously I couldnt get worked up over this at all.DH and family always know I am a bit messy ,DM the same as well we used to tease her .She would laugh along . wouldnt die on this hill.Just dont wear it if you dont like it

I think I would take this as a prompt to eat back at the table. It's easy to fall into bad habits and if you have one why not put it to good use. It's better for digestion to eat at a table and better for moderation and portion control not to eat Infront of the TV. Have a conversation over dinner then go and watch TV if you want.

I wouldn't bother returning it, it would live in a bad until I did a wardrobe sort out for charity.

Edited

Good shout and a good response to his "joke", if he likes eating in front of the TV, that you will unfortunately now have to eat at the table to avoid food spillage. Oh dear!

5128gap · 29/08/2024 09:07

I wouldn't like it because I wouldn't want attention drawn to the fact I did that embarrassing thing. You're right, its not 'sexy' for an adult to do this as a regular part of eating. It does seem a little pointed so maybe a hint to brush up your table manners/skills? Or maybe he genuinely thinks it's funny. You know his character.

Nothanks17 · 29/08/2024 09:07

I think this is simply a joke to make you laugh. The hurt feels probably originating from another place which have made you not see light in the situation.

StarSlinger · 29/08/2024 09:07

My bra is often full of crumbs when I take it off. I must be a right slob 🤣

DancingLions · 29/08/2024 09:06

Some of these comments make me quite sad. I sometimes drop a bit of food on myself, always have. I am quite clumsy in general. It's not like I do it deliberately. I can promise you it annoys me just as much as anyone. I can never wear light colour tops as I know they will end up stained. I didn't realise how judgemental people might be upon seeing it though. This has come as a bit of a shock to me. I mean it's not like I'm slopping gallons of sauce down my front! It might be the odd little drip or some crumbs. I try really hard not to but it just happens.

OP, you know your DH better than we do. Do you think he genuinely meant it as a (crap) joke or was it a dig? That would affect how I felt about it. But I can see why you're upset.

Andthereitis · 29/08/2024 09:01

Go out for lunch with him and pull it out.

You probably need to talk to him about everything.

I get dinner down me sometimes. Perhaps I don't pay attention enough whilst I'm eating. Toothpaste too.

I often notice a blob of tooth paste on my top, usually when I'm on my way to work.

1983Louise · 29/08/2024 09:03

I don't think it's about the bib really, you sound really low in yourself maybe you should look at that rather than him buying you a bib.

Bibblunders · 29/08/2024 08:13

Okay fair enough. It was definitely a joke, that I do know. I just felt mildly irritated by it. It's maybe a bit deep seated in me, we haven't had much sex lately, and this just made me feel a bit shit.

This is the real issue. You are feeling a little insecure in your relationship and the gift didn’t paint you in a way you want to be seen by your DH. I can understand that reaction although he almost certainly doesn’t feel less attracted to you because you occasionally drip curry sauce on your ample bosom (there’s probably a scene for that to be honest 😂). I would laugh the gift off but maybe make time for some more civilised dinners (at the table); candles, nice food, dress up a bit, etc. to get you back into relationship mode not mates mode.

ChildlessCatLadiesRuleOK · 29/08/2024 09:00

Not everyone. Toddlers do, obviously. Most adults can cope with eating at a table, sitting up straight and concentrating on what they are doing. I'd say it was one of the minimum requirements if you live with other people.

So you have never dropped food down your top ever? I don't believe you.

I tuck a tea towel into the neckband of my clothes. I'm just very clumsy. Ignore the posters saying that there must be something wrong with you, not exactly helping is it!!

My partner calls one of my tops an 'eating shirt' because I always spill things on it. I'm in on the joke though and find it funny.

Icanttakethisanymore · 29/08/2024 08:55

I think it’s quite funny, I might get one for my DH

Beeranddresses · 29/08/2024 08:55

Josephinesnapoleon · 29/08/2024 08:38

That’s hard though, as your thought process means the giver should be able to mind read on all occasions and know how a joke will be taken.

i assume there is some signficant issue with the way the op eats, for him to go to this effort and her to be so upset. And yeah i guess it is unattractive if your partner keeps dropping their food all down them, honestly id be a bit disgusted if my husband did that a lot, unless of course there was some reason why, which isn’t the case here. We can all take the time to eat carefully and eat properly.

Your second paragraph rather undermines your first.
