How would you feel, if your DH bought you a bib?

He bought me an adult pelican bib! He thinks it's hilarious.

It says on it "if you can read this, I haven't had my dinner yet". I do drop food on myself, fair enough, but I just think this isn't funny.

And, given that I'm never going to wear it, a total waste of time, because to send it back, he has to parcel it back up and drive some distance to a post office, because we don't have a post office in our town.

I don't know if my sense of humour is lacking, but I feel offended. Maybe that's too strong a word, I don't know, maybe belittled or like he's thinking I'm not sexy, if that makes sense? Maybe I need to lighten up!

YABU - lighten up, it's just a joke

YANBU - I wouldn't like that either

Jokes are when the other person laughs.

Agree with this.

It may be a ‘joke’ and also may be something he’s trying to ‘light heartedly’ make light out of… however, if it’s a joke at your expense you don’t need to get over it.
Tell him he’s being insensitive and Chuck it out. Perhaps take extra care when eating so he has nothing to point out 💪🏻💐

sesa145 · 30/08/2024 00:23

Next time he tells you you have wasted money on something, point out that he bought you an adult bib

Middleagedspreadisreal · 29/08/2024 22:11

Not sexy?? It's a bib.

RampantIvy · 29/08/2024 22:06

ll the ppl shaming the op for dropping food on her: I do it sometimes too

She must do it a lot if her husband has bought her a bib. I think everyone occasionally drops food on themselves, but most able people can eat without spilling food on them all the time.

My GC laugh at me when I drip gravy down my t-shirt - I tend to tuck a napkin in at the neck if I'm eating spaghetti or anything with a stainy sauce when I'm out.

2Rebecca · 29/08/2024 22:02

I would be offended as it is an offensive thing to buy for an adult but I'd also be concerned that my table manners have deteriorated and that I need to slow down and be less messy.

Soberinthecity · 29/08/2024 21:52

All the ppl shaming the op for dropping food on her: I do it sometimes too; It’s not that unusual. And for something to be a joke, it needs to be funny - this is giving “Benidorm all inc” humour.

mrsm43s · 29/08/2024 21:49

If you're disabled and are actually unable to eat without spilling things, then your DH is an arsehole of the highest order.

If you're just a lazy, sloppy eater that has the phsical capability of eating properly, but instead chooses to eat like a toddler, I'd suggest you either wear the bib, or (preferably)change your behaviour and eat like an adult. Gross to need to tell an able bodied adult that they need to eat without throwing their food down their top though. Bleurgh.

BurbageBrook · 29/08/2024 21:45

After your update I understand more. You're totally overreacting about the bib, but is it because you don't feel sexy etc and your DH doesn't usually get you nice gifts so a joke gift feels like a kick in the teeth?

tommyhoundmum · 29/08/2024 21:24

I spill food op as I try to read at the same time.

scotstarstrikestwo · 29/08/2024 21:13

My ex mil put a bib in my table setting on wedding day as a joke

Sounds like a great present to me (I say as I sit here wearing my adult bib that my husband bought me as a joke)

Turns out the joke was on him as I wear it every night without fail and saves my clothes from all sorts. Embrace the bib life, you won’t regret it 🤣

Exactly - love the bib! Nothing wrong with it at all x

LouH5 · 29/08/2024 21:05

I think it depends how he gave it- if he genuinely finds it hilarious and thought you’d think it was funny too, then it’s fine.
If there was a sly tone to it, like he was trying to embarrass you or make you feel bad, it’s not
great.

SirStanley · 29/08/2024 20:59

FFS surely a joke! My DH does the washing (yes this is his job) and I am always spilling food on my clothes while we’re watching telly - I just say - you’d better be able to get this out of this top - he’d buy me a bib in the blink of his eye and I’d take it - thank you very much - I would not have any weird notion about it - if you’re messy, then you are 😆

RampantIvy · 29/08/2024 20:47

Bibblunders · 29/08/2024 08:24

We don't eat at the table much these days. We always used to, but since kids have left home, we tend to eat on laps and watch TV. That sounds terrible, written down! We do switch TV off after dinner and have a good talk about our day etc. There's nothing wrong with me, but I do tend to drop food, lol. I don't know why! We have a lot of things with sauce, like curry. I am big chested, but I don't think that's got much to do with it.

So eat at the table then.
Surely it's more comfortable to sit upright than hunched over a plate on the settee?

TowerRavenSeven · 29/08/2024 20:17

I too always get stuff on myself and frequently tell dh I should get myself a bib. But if he actually went out and got me one I’d be more than irritated! Humiliated is more like it.

BurbageBrook · 29/08/2024 20:12

I think it's funny. You sound super precious.

strungouteyes · 29/08/2024 20:08

I can imagine my DH doing that and I'd find it hilarious and make a point of wearing it

OhcantthInkofaname · 29/08/2024 20:01

Bibblunders · 29/08/2024 08:13

Okay fair enough. It was definitely a joke, that I do know. I just felt mildly irritated by it. It's maybe a bit deep seated in me, we haven't had much sex lately, and this just made me feel a bit shit.

I wouldn't be having sex for a while.

AcrossthePond55 · 29/08/2024 19:33

I guess it depends. DH and I are also 'TV eaters', retired and CBA to set the table I guess. I have an 'off and on' slight tremor in my hands & lower arms that happens without warning and can affect how steadily I hold my cutlery. I'm rather large bosomed and there are occasional unexpected drips or drops. If DH bought me a bib as a joke I probably wouldn't find it funny as I'm a little sensitive about it. But if he bought me one because he seriously thought he was being helpful, then I'd put it down to 'caring' and I'd be fine with it.

supersop60 · 29/08/2024 19:29

Josephinesnapoleon · 29/08/2024 08:16

I’m not sure why you keep refering it to sex. I don’t see the link. If you keep dropping food on yourself it is something to look at as that’s not normal. And bib or not, he will react to that. It would need to be fairly major if you think it’s enough to put him off sex.

I'm guessing that the OP already feels a bit shit (rejected?) by the lack of sex, and this unfunny joke at her expense makes her feel unloved.

funnyoldonion · 29/08/2024 19:29

Tbf a bib wouldn’t make a difference to my family it would still be all over their trousers

TaterTots68 · 29/08/2024 19:25

I think it depends on the person giving the 'gift'. If my DH did this, it would make me laugh because it would be given as a joke and with no malice intended. However if you feel it's a sly dog and he's often passive aggressive or making digs, you are probably right to be offended
