What threads have you seen on here that have lodged themselves into your brain?

For me it's the lady who was gifted a periscope by her dh which was completely random and hilarious.

Also the lady who upset a crow and never came back! Assumed she and her dog were eaten by the crows.

Lots of threads stay in my mind but the one that I think about is the little 9yr old girl Allidah, who had leukemia and sadly died. Her favourite song was Call me maybe. Can't hear that song without wondering how old she would have been and what she would be doing now. This was 2012 I think.
If her mums still on here, I remember your beautiful girl.

I read somewhere that most deaths announced on the internet are fictitious and are merely someone killing off their character.

I mean it of course makes sense that a longstanding poster who is well known might have someone who knows that they post on mn and who might come on to announce that they had died. E.g. emin was a well known poster who posted about her foster babies long before she tragically fell ill, so it stands to reason that some in would post an update when she passed away.

But a first time poster who asks whether they should go to a&e, who end up not doing so and then their death is announced? I’d never say it but I’d take that with a bucket of salt. As if a bereaved relative is going to go through someone’s internet history and find the exact thread, and then post an update.

Did the Allotment thread ever get resolved? I think it was Barbara (?) who adopted the allotment and the OP who'd bought the house was trying to get Barbara to leave because it was now her allotment. I think there was some contractual wrangling going on between solicitors.

or was it all made up Grin

CallItLoneliness · 28/08/2024 04:28

The thread from the woman whose abusive husband had installed a giant aquarium with blue lights that caused her migraines in their kitchen, and insisted the lights had to be on during her morning feeding the kids and such.

Also, a thread by a poster called MrsHenryWinter about a man who turned out to be monstrously abusive. I remember her saying how she just wanted to choose how to arrange her own carrots.

I often think of both of them and hope they got out ok.

This thread alerted me to CathThiefKeith's death--I didn't know, and I am so sad to read of it.

Onetwothreebadknee · 28/08/2024 04:06

Penis beaker!

Another one about things that had happened to you that only years later you realised was very wrong or even abuse, such sad things I read

Lady who was fostering a preemie baby who was born addicted to drugs. Really humbling thread.

This one for sure. A wonderful woman who tragically died far too young. I cried when I read that she had died.

SeatonCarew · 28/08/2024 03:41

There was one from a woman some years ago whose husband was abusive to her and her sons. I can't remember the details now, but he'd done some unsafe DIY for the sons - an unsafe sleeping platform or some bunkbeds? - and was insisting the boys slept up there. It was quite extreme.

Another poster who discovered her DP was filming her naked while she slept and posting it in an internet forum. Another woman came on to say the same thing had happened to her.

A woman who had bought a dreadful crow or raven in the Argos sale, and loads of us ended up buying one for a laugh and puzzling the people at Argos terribly.

Edited to add the woman who was having a dreadful holiday somewhere in Europe. It turned out another poster was staying in the same hotel, had already seen her husband around the hotel, (I think they were in nearby rooms) and the two families ended up spending lots of time together and having a whale of a time. That was a lovely one, and very funny.

notanothernamechange24 · 28/08/2024 02:48

Can't remember the name of the thread but the 'darked on' thread where a poster was horrified at the idea of washing being left outside overnight.
Makes me chuckle every time I put washing outside.

I love the one where a lady had been driving and saw a weird animal She couldn't draw it but described it and another mumsnetter drew it. I think it turned out that they lived near to each other.

I've never forgotten.this either 😱

Letsgodancing · 28/08/2024 02:12

There's one from a few years back, quite a sad one but I remember it well, she had a very controlling partner and didn't have any personal space, she did update to say that she had a new job and new place to live lined up but never saw any updates after that. I hope she did manage to move on and is having a lovely life now

ILuvfur5 · 28/08/2024 02:06

I’m so glad this thread was started because I’ve been thinking and wondering about a lady who posted a while ago about her girlfriend who was very overprotective and wondering what happened.

She used to mother her a bit, obsessed about what she’d eaten, help her with her coat on and it started off as seemingly being overprotective but ended up more like controlling. The more the OP shared the more she started to realise, she confronted her girlfriend who sent her back a video of herself crying.

I thought I’d watched the thread but apparently not. In the end OP asked her girlfriend for space who agreed but I doubt it ended like that.

I don’t know why it’s stayed with me but I’ve often wondered what happened next.

I’ve been very vague so not sure if anyone will have a clue what I’m talking about (even the OP!) but on the off chance there is an update I’d really like one!

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 28/08/2024 02:02

I think it ended up Swiss-cheesed in the end, as OP's posts were deleted, but the thread about the man who turned up at OP's company to bring/fetch his DD (who worked there) and left a monster honking turd that stank everybody out every single day was one that I remembered for quite a long time!

PerkyMintDeer · 28/08/2024 01:56

Just remembered another one…

Someone had posted about a new baby being called Eglantine, saying how awful the name was and how bad they felt for the baby. Lots of posters agreed, lots of Egg jokes, people saying how could the parents be so mean etc.

Then some friends of the parents posted to say Eglantine’s parents were aware of the thread and how awful OP was mocking a newborn and that they’d be found out.

LovelyBitOfHam · 28/08/2024 01:55

What was the name of the poster who was having difficulty with the transwoman at work? I think they kept taking tampons from the toilets… The boss always defended this individual because they were having an affair and none of the other women in the office felt safe.

I don’t believe she came back but would have loved an update.

FGSChargethecarregularly · 28/08/2024 01:39

Also really enjoyed the Christmas Haikus one quite a few years ago.

Another brilliant one with poetry 😉 was many years ago when a woman had gone to a Musictots session at her local library and sat down in a vacant chair. Only trouble was the chair was next to a petty piece of work who resented her sitting there because she was ‘keeping it’ for her new friend.

It brought out the wittiest Mumsnetters adapting nursery rhymes to insult the seat keeper. Must go and look for it.

LovelyBitOfHam · 28/08/2024 01:32

There was once a thread about a mysterious smartphone that appeared in someone’s living room in the night and no one knew how it got there or who it belonged to. I think it was bullshit but as far as I remember the poster didn’t come back.

Mexican house thief.

AlpacalypseLlamaggedon · 28/08/2024 01:32

A bonkers thread titled something like 'What on earth is the private troll topic?' where the OP had found a weird talk topic that didn't show on active conversations. A load of posters piled on and turned the thread into a kind of choose your own adventure story with riddles. Pretending to be an army going to rescue the OP when they disappeared. So funny.

FGSChargethecarregularly · 28/08/2024 01:32

About ten years ago there was a lady in her 60’s I think, who was living in a mobile home with her abusive DH/DP. Mumsnet collective began to help her see just how bad he was and possible pathways out of there.

Snapped and farted

Lemon drizzle cake - the schadenfreude re: the letter writer. I think it was something like “she’s a moron with a CAD subscription”.

Savernake Forest

Recently a woman who’d had a good career and couldn’t figure out a way (practically) to get to work every day after she’d had her latest baby because her H would do nothing to help.

LiterallyOnFire · 28/08/2024 01:32

Gagaandgag · 28/08/2024 01:09

Claire’s mum. Was it a troll?

There was a detailed dissection on the r/ place. I gave up. All very confusing.

Peasnbeans · 28/08/2024 01:29

Was there a follow up to the woman who's husband had gone abroad but she found an air tag in the car?
And the woman who was leaving on one particular morning to a refuge, with tight timings.
I also think of purple coats too - her son - and I hope to read an update one day.

OVienna · 28/08/2024 01:28

The one where the woman and her husband had a masage therapist come to the house and the DH cooked the therapist a steak dinner. Her issue was that the DH charged her ( the OP) for the cost of the steak (not whether it was totally weird he was cooking for the woman.)

Also- how crazy the Megan and Harry threads got during the first lockdown. I must admit to being caught up in it. I cannot think whatever possessed me to give the whole thing the time of day. I had never given them any thought before . Threads would start and reach a 1000 posts in hours.

Gagaandgag · 28/08/2024 01:22

Claire’s mum - her daughter was in a car accident and she was by her bedside

HollyKnight · 28/08/2024 01:21

There was one a number of years ago that still breaks my heart to think about. A lady fell asleep in the chair while holding her young baby. She woke up to find the baby had slipped down and sadly passed away at some point. Absolutely horrendous.

The Pamela thing still makes me so mad. To anyone who knows anything about her stage of cancer, it was clear she was dying. But instead of spending her last days at home surrounded by her family - which included a teenage son - she was riled up by a consultant, who hadn't reviewed her case, (and possibly MN...), into flying overseas for surgery and treatment that wasn't going to do shit.

tobee · 28/08/2024 01:20

Dd and I often reference looking like Suzi Quattro's fat nan.

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 28/08/2024 01:18

Alphabet Street was pure gold. I know there were suggestions that it had all been made up; but if so, it was so skilfully, entertainingly done.

Personally, I object to people making up hilarious (false) situations like that being called trolls at all. Trolls are nasty, vindictive, deceitful, manipulative, negative, deliberately upsetting, controlling etc. To me, somebody presenting a harmless, brilliantly-crafted work of top-comedy abstract fiction like that for our combined community delight and engagement is absolutely not a troll at all.
