Was I being unkind? Women filming themselves in their pants

I was scrolling through tiktok and came across a video of a woman showing a jumpsuit outfit which she is reccomending people buy.

The strange part to me is that the video begins with her standing there in tiny knickers and a bra then she gets dressed into the jumpsuit.

I perhaps shouldn't have said anything at all but left the following comment

"You look lovely. I'm not being unkind but why has it become so normalised to upload videos of ourselves in our underwear? You don't have to expose yourself like that to show the garment x"

Cue a pile on and her getting pissed off because apparently I'm only saying it because of her body type - which had absolutely nothing to do with it for me. We actually look quite similar in the buff!

I'm seeing more and more of these videos and it has become the new normal and done thing on social media for people who want to show clothes, to stand their in their pants beforehand and have you watch them get dressed.

Was I being unreasonable to say what I said and am I unreasonable for thinking its fucking weird and unnecessary?

"I want to show you this dress, but first here's my knickers!"

Edited to add - I mention women specifically because I'm not seeing any of these videos from men.. and nor do I want to 😐

@HolyPeaches why do you think 30 yr olds wouldn’t be damaged by social media?

Stickytoffeepudding6 · 27/08/2024 21:33

I agree. Really one of those trends I wish would go away.

@AlwaysKindaKnewYoudBeTheDeathOfMe yes, could be - I think we just have much less control over it these days. It's no lie that we are all bombarded these days with multiple things we probably don't want to see.

At least with readers wives, I could rip out the crusty page then throw it in the bin on discovery 🤷‍♀️😬

I really think that women getting dressed is far from the worst a teenage boy could be exposed too.

Glitterglitch · 27/08/2024 21:30

A lot of people supporting this don’t seem to factor in the balance of power in society, or it’s effect on women and girls.

Exactly this.

AGentleMusing · 27/08/2024 21:30

I'm a chilled, reformed wild child so by no means a prude but this stuff is becoming insane. The social media Tiktok half naked air head explosion is just infuriating me. I don't know why I get so bothered. It's not jealousy at all - I think it's more feeling so separate from society when so many are just absolute brain dead zombies flashing their everything for likes.

I think it's irritating because there seems to be one group of women who are increasingly frustrated by the oversexualisatipn of women for men's entertainment.

And another group of women who are actively subscribing to it and supporting it.

There will be other groups of women. We don't all fit into those two groups. But maybe that's it.

ThisFunHedgehog · 27/08/2024 21:28

YANBU. It’s completely unnecessary to be in bra and knickers to show a clothing item.

Glitterglitch · 27/08/2024 21:26

I mean I’m sure the Kardashians are nice people on an individual level but I definitely think their SM presence is pretty damaging in a number of ways. It doesn’t impact me but as I have young dc & as I said work with young people I can’t ignore them. Just because something doesn’t affect you directly doesn’t mean you are wrong to have concerns & should ignore it.

What an ignorant comment. Nothing the op said suggests that. A wider conversation about the normalisation of showing women’s bodies in underwear affects us all whether people like it or not. The op is right to raise it as a topic for debate. A lot of people supporting this don’t seem to factor in the balance of power in society, or its effect on women and girls.

If anything, I think your comment reflects more on you than on the op.

I'm 30.

Me too. 93’ baby.

We’re young. But we aren’t the “young people” that people are worried about being exposed to content on social media, I was thinking more teenagers, and children.

It's just attention seeking. This is the internet now.

Exactly.
These people need views / clicks / comments like the rest of us need oxygen.
If your comment got the comments section going… you’re pouring fuel on the fire.
So expect more videos like it, on these sites controversy + comments = revenue.

There are many women who model very revealing clothing these days. Not sure is it anything anymore apart from the ones who are into old fashioned morality and yes, I agree, your voices are being mocked and drowned. It should not be the case, just as it with pro life

Eh? What has this got to do with being pro-life anti-abortion?

ClockwiseHoneysuckle · 27/08/2024 21:23

Doggymummar · 27/08/2024 20:22

Isn't it called get dressed with me? So they start off in underwear?

If it's "Getting dressed with me" logically they should start off naked.

Edit: no, I'm definitely NOT saying anyone actually should do this.

Pantaloons99 · 27/08/2024 21:23

Garlicfest · 27/08/2024 20:59

@Pantaloons99 - My mind is going to a place regards other videos I've seen so much of.

Well, okay, but what are you watching?? I never see TikToks of women "being sexy" so we must have very different viewing preferences 👀

As for flashing the gash - good god! Your mind is DEFINITELY going places that have nothing to do with trying on Primark's autumn wear.

I'm taking this original discussion into a wider context - appreciate that.

I spend alot of time on YouTube watching podcasts I love - every celeb and their mate on Only Fans has come up in the various podcasts I've seen. This I imagine is feeding my personal algorithms.

The issue for OP and myself I'd say - beyond just the look at me in my pants - it's the onslaught of annoying attention seeking behaviour online in multiple guises. I include young annoying Tiktok men in this. I wonder if OP feels the same about that if she's seeing that?

I'm on FB and love watching crappy reels. Mundane and ridiculous mostly which I like, but no shortage of this look at me videos, and yes, I think alot of them are sexualised, ridiculously attention seeking and irritating beyond words. OP is probably thinking 'just stop will you'. She's taken that further and commented. Fair enough, why not.

I'm quite taken by the fabulous magazine pictures I think you posted above. I'll be sure my son never ever sees such abominable filth!

Winrus · 27/08/2024 20:20

Yabu because it’s none of your business what she does. It doesn’t really take a genuine to figure out why she’s doing this does it? Just move on if you don’t like it.

Weird comment. If someone puts this on TikTok, they've made it everyone's business.

TheClawDecides · 27/08/2024 21:22

Oh well, at least you put a ridiculous kiss after your judgemental comment.

That must've softened the blow 🙄

MattSmithsBowTie · 27/08/2024 21:22

I’m sure we can all image what can happen to screen grabs of women in their bra and pants, I mean if you’re a billboard model and you’re getting paid a decent whack and modelling is your career then great, but if you’re flogging some cheap-o clothes on tik tok for a few pennies I’m not sure I’d take the risk.

PolkaDotPenquin · 27/08/2024 21:22

I agree, I find it totally cringe. I also think these women pretend they are doing it for empowerment but really it’s attention.
They want the likes and for people tosay how good they look in the underwear. It’s such a strange grab for attention.

HolyPeaches · 27/08/2024 21:16

I’m assuming the OP isn’t a young person?

However, if she is being negatively impacted by the content she is seeing on social media then perhaps she can join the wider conversations and campaign for a safer online world for everyone.

But if it’s not that deep for her, then surely she’s mature enough to just ignore content she doesn’t like.

I'm 30.

Glitterglitch · 27/08/2024 21:20

@HolyPeaches a wider conversation obviously means outside of this thread 😆
I work with young people & there are definitely a lot issues with SM, I don’t think the solution is just to tell them to campaign for better online safety. You can disagree though.

And if someone is against wearing revealing clothes then they don’t have to wear them. They can turn their face away, shut their eyes, or click away from the video if they see something they don’t like.

Not quite sure what pro life has to do with this, but the same applies - if a woman doesn’t want to have an abortion she doesn’t have to have one.

I tend to think we shouldn’t police other women’s choices about their own bodies, regardless of whether we personally agree with their choice.

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 27/08/2024 21:19

This. It’s supposed to be useful - I have a noticeable tummy (even though I’m slim) and enormous tits when in my underwear but both are hugely minimised with the right clothing. It’s not sexualised at all - it’s about helping women understand how to dress for their body type. And I’m hugely anti porn and anti sexualisation of women in most situations. I don’t think this is one of them (disclaimer that I didn’t see the content so maybe it was sexualised. But I’ve see a lot of “get dressed” content and it’s really not very sexual at all).

Your Sainsbury’s analogy isn’t relevant. If you walked around the supermarket in your bikini you would probably be asked to leave. But it’s fine on the beach. Context is everything.

But that is her point - she is innocently trying to look at a jumpsuit but has to see a woman in her bra and knickers first. She did not sign up for that.
