SIL wants holiday updates

Beachdays86 · 26/08/2024 20:45

We are currently away for 2 weeks with DD and enjoying some much needed quality family time together. DH has put a few photos on his family WhatsApp chat, but SIL is messaging every day asking for more photos and holiday updates. I have a strained relationship with her anyway after she has caused problems between myself and DH. I don’t go out of my way to contact her, but I’m getting fed up of the constant requests for holiday updates. She needs to know everything that’s going on and I have stopped her having access to me after she said a number of things to DD about me. AIBU to tell her to fuck off?!

Feel good about telling her to eff off! Why does she want more and too many photos? block her for a long while. starve her of knowledge! She might waste away with nothing to talk about and have no gossip to share about you!! Also tell her you are blocking her!

Personally I would say this is the last update as we're tacking a break from the tech and switching off yo spend some quality time. Then sign out on all socials so she can't keep track.

Awittyandclevername · 01/09/2024 23:23

This is a great example of a situation where boundaries can be and need to be set. So a boundary is something that YOU do. You can’t control what someone else does, I agree with you, it’s invasive and strange that she’s messaging you guys every day for updates… so you need to decide what boundary to set. Don’t make up excuses like others have said about your phone being broken etc. there is no reason whatsoever to lie or feel awkward about not giving her what she wants. My response would probably be ‘hi, sorry we’re enjoying family time so not on our phones much, if we do have some pictures we’d like to share, we will let you know when we’re home. Speak to you in 2 weeks’ then just silence chat til you get back.

Improbablywrong · 28/08/2024 10:54

My sister in law can be like this and it’s usually so she can copy or try and out do what we are doing. she’ll take the same picture I’ve taken but in an inferior location, and say “lovely family holiday” - or just post my photo as hers 🤣

JFDIYOLO · 28/08/2024 10:47

That 'she would make a better mummy than me' comment is SO WEIRD.

Like she sees herself as her brother's partner and is jealous of you.

7yo7yo · 28/08/2024 02:30

Just burn bridges with her. You will always be the sacrificial goat who will have her needs put last especially by your DH. Fuck it. Trll her on the family group that after what she’s done you do not wish to engage with her or have anything to do with her.

another question is why didn’t you divorce? What have you allowed your DH to get away with this? Are you actually happy?

That’s just one of the surface comments!

Christ, OP. I don’t blame you for being NC. Have you posted before? A weirdly involved and possessive fucked up creepy sister sounds familiar.

Wanting to be the mother of her brother’s child…. Fucking hell.

That’s just one of the surface comments!

Send her a hashtag each day by way of updates

#family time
#making memories
#peace and quiet away from life back home

and other sickly quotes

Yes there is a significant back story but it is too outing. Less outing things have been along the lines of telling DD it would be better and a much happier time if mummy doesn’t come along, telling DD that she would make a much better mummy to her than me. The list of things she’s said gets worse, but for anyone saying DD is lucky to have an Aunt so invested that investment comes with a lot of problems.

ABirdsEyeView · 27/08/2024 13:23

Take his phone, delete the family group chat. Tell your husband that neither you or your dd will be seeing her again (bad mouthing a mother to her child is unforgivable and means she is not a safe person to have access to your child).
Tell him if he mentions her to you again, the divorce conversation will be revisited.

Your problem is your husband, not your sister in law!

Olika · 27/08/2024 12:26

You have a bigger problem in hands than sharing holiday day photos if SIL keeps badmouthing you to your children and your DH hasn't made stop to this.

whynotwhatknot · 27/08/2024 12:07

you have a dh problem then he knows what shes like an does nothing-woul rather upset you than her

MeridianB · 27/08/2024 10:25

Beachdays86 · 26/08/2024 20:51

His family chat that I’ve muted and archived!

Job done. And ask DH not to mention any of her messages.

Cherrysoup · 27/08/2024 10:04

You have a Dh problem. If he won’t tell her, why don’t you put a message on the family WhatsApp along the lines of ‘Busy having fun, photos when we get back’?

shams05 · 27/08/2024 10:01

Just put one message on the group with a few pictures from yesterday and a quote, "wish you were here, will share more photos once we're home!' and then ignore any further demands.

PfishFood · 27/08/2024 09:47

I am an auntie and loved receiving updates from my SIL on her recent holiday with my DNs.

I didn't, however, feel the need to badger for updates and photos to feel part of their holiday because I have boundaries and I know how much they needed the break! SIL contacted me of her own accord during their break for a chat, so I responded only when she contacted me.

I'd like to think that's what a decent SIL does.

You do have a SIL problem but you have a bigger DH problem. Not so much over the Whatsapp demands as those are easily ignored, but the comments to your DD are unacceptable.

I'd be saying to DH that unless he nips those comments in the bud you won't be allowing her to see the children again.

Unfortunately if you did split, he would be able to let them see whoever he wants on his days, so cut off DD's contact with her and grey rock her yourself, then try to maintain your relationship with your DH.

along the lines of telling DD it would be better and a much happier time if mummy doesn’t come along, telling DD that she would make a much better mummy to her than me.

Why is your DH allowing this??? There is no way in a million years my DP would allow his sibling to talk about me like this...

Because it is said to our young daughter who then repeats innocently what has been said. DH says it’s 3rd hand. The truth is DH will use SIL mental health as an excuse each time I bring her up. We nearly divorced as I felt he never has my back and doesn’t seem to want to upset her

WTF?! How have you "nearly divorced" over his sister? And why does she need constant photos of you and your children on holiday?! That's very, very odd...

Sorry but there must be more to this story!

Zanatdy · 27/08/2024 09:10

Just don’t reply on what’s app, or say we are turning off our phones to enjoy some time out. See you when we get back. End of

Vintago · 27/08/2024 09:08

You have the right to have nothing to do with her but it is controlling to try to control your DH's relationship with his sister.
Just ignore, no one is trying to contact you. It is DH's family chat and he can post as he feels fit

needsomewarmsunshine · 27/08/2024 09:08

Let dh deal with her her, she's either nosy or waitting to stir some shit, why would she be so invested in your holiday if she doesn't like you?
Why does everything have to go on social media nowadays? It often turns into pestering, bitchiness and causing arguments, as demonstrated by this thread and many others.
