Help settle a discussion between between me and my husband.
I think scraping your cutlery on your plate is the equivalent of licking your plate.. The foods gone, no need for all of the scraping to get every last morsel of food in your gob!
He thinks my intolerance to food noises is getting out of hand.
I will admit I've always been sensitive to people chewing/slurping but regardless I still believe scraping is bad table manners, anyone else, or am I really being unreasonable?

  • For context we have had chicken salad for dinner, he had finished but was scraping mayonnaise left on the plate onto his fork.

People tutting

Funnywonder · 26/08/2024 21:50

I've mentioned this one before on another thread, but the noise of football matches on TV. Even worse, through a phone. DP carries his phone around while listening to the football. No headphones. I want to throttle him. Not a court in the land would convict me.

People eating/chewing. I don't actually mind crunchy crisp sounds, it's more that mulching sound of food getting progressively wet in someone's mouth.

Levistico · 26/08/2024 21:43

All of the above, and whistling nose breathing 🤮.

Do you have particularly scrapy plates? There are some that are slightly rough and the sound is just horrible, but if the glaze is nice and shiny there's no issue. Wondering if new plates could restore marital harmony!

They are new, i got a new set last Christmas. It's definitely my husband who is the problem. I manage to eat without scraping, it's pure gluttony.. He just can't stand to leave a morsel of food.
I have noticed though that lots of people do it. I think some are never taught polite table manners.

Ooh yes, cutlery scraping or any cutlery noise. Any noisy eating makes me murderous. I was in a queue in M&S last week and there was a woman around my age (52) chewing, nay smacking, gum with her mouth open. I actually wanted to kill her.

Timeturnerplease · 26/08/2024 21:31

Snoring gives me the absolute rage. As does loud tv/music. Both of these sounds are ones frequently omitted/caused by DH. It’s a good job I love him.

Tooty78 · 26/08/2024 21:30

That woman screeching 'Darling hold my hand' on that holiday ad. I have to mute it, otherwise I end up with earworm😡

WayDownThere · 26/08/2024 21:28

Whistling

wastingtimeonhere · 26/08/2024 21:23

chewing, slopping food
sniffing
snorting
babies crying/ screeching ( ptsd related)
phones ringing
noisy environments ( pubs, restaurants)
I do have APD though.

Rubyupbeat · 26/08/2024 21:23

Eating with mouth open, slurping tea, cracking knuckles, kissing lips, hoiking and spitting phlegm.
Just a fraction of annoying sounds, I have so many.

Pussycat22 · 26/08/2024 21:20

Noisy idiots in back firing cars at weekend.

OrangeSlices998 · 26/08/2024 21:19

People cracking their knuckles, makes me physically uncomfortable I cannot bear it!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 26/08/2024 21:16

A shovel scraping along concrete.
Death metal music.
Mil.and sil voices

There is a customer who has false teeth - not fitted properly he grinds his mouth to keep them in place.

We call him Mr Grind

rainbowbee · 26/08/2024 21:02

Slow smacking eating. Man in work does that. I hate him bitterly for it.
The high pitched shriek that small kids and some women make.
Tinny noise of phone videos without headphones.
Drink slurping.
Self service till- constant beep beep please take your groceries assistance needed X12 machines.
And yes, plate scraping. We were taught that's rude.

I don't like mouth noises. DP sometimes does these really loud swallows that piss me off. DSS does this weird lip licking thing CONSTANTLY, so if we're sitting in the living room reading or doing something quiet, it's ALL I can hear. Or he sucks on the ends of his hair. He's also a really, really noisy eater, eats with his mouth open, really sloppy, chewy noises. It's absolutely soul destroying and makes me want to smash things. He's 21 ffs. It makes me want to turn into one of those evil stepmothers people talk about and banish him to the shed 😅.

God your step son sounds awful, does he have a girlfriend.. Has anyone ever told him to stop eating like a sodding goat?!?

Snoring. It gives me the rage.

Pyreneansylvie · 26/08/2024 20:58

Yup, I'm another who detests spitting.
I also get irritated by:
The noise of our fridge.
Humming/buzzing of (ex neighbours) hot tub; like the fridge hum but multiplied umpteen times over.
Thumping of footballs/basketballs for hours on end.
My DH doing weirdly squeaky/hissy yawns that sound like a jet engine starting up (he always seems to do it when I'm engrossed in reading a book)
My DH crunching crisps when I'm not.
The cat washing herself on the bed in the middle of the night
The cat ratching on the litter tray in the middle of the night

Auburngal · 26/08/2024 20:57

Think I have misophonia - a condition which creates a decreased tolerance to certain sounds. Like beeps, whistling, dripping tap, lip smacking etc.

At work, we have a squeaking pair of automatic doors at the entrance and it drives me mad. Most of my colleagues don't hear it and think I am crazy.

Probably my dyslexia affects this too.

COUGHING

HelterSkelter224 · 26/08/2024 20:50

My husband eating. Sitting on the sofa this evening eating a yoghurt breathing noisily through his nose and making little grunt sounds 🤯🤯🤯

C1N1C · 26/08/2024 20:47

The neighbour is drilling... like literally now... at almost 9pm.

That's mine at the moment.

Cheesandcrackers · 26/08/2024 20:46

People who constantly clear their throat or sniff....
