Help settle a discussion between between me and my husband.
I think scraping your cutlery on your plate is the equivalent of licking your plate.. The foods gone, no need for all of the scraping to get every last morsel of food in your gob!
He thinks my intolerance to food noises is getting out of hand.
I will admit I've always been sensitive to people chewing/slurping but regardless I still believe scraping is bad table manners, anyone else, or am I really being unreasonable?

  • For context we have had chicken salad for dinner, he had finished but was scraping mayonnaise left on the plate onto his fork.

Squealing children, especially in public places like shops and art galleries (both recently).

Boy racers with fat exhausts and bass heavy stereos.

Really?! I’ve literally never heard a woman do it, to my knowledge. I was thinking earlier about the physical mechanics of it and I actually don’t know/can’t figure out how it’s done!

You definitely have my sympathies with sinuses, I get horrendous seasonal headaches from sinus pressure, but I assume this is the opposite problem, maybe?

I spend a lot of time hacking up, sniffing, hawking, blowing, clearing. Usually worse in the morning and certainly on walks (which I am trying to do to get fit but all it results in is a constant stream of snot coming out)

Spouses get more and more irritating as they age!

Dh slices his food like he is trying to cut through my lovely Denby plates, then the knife slips with the pressure and squeals across the plate.

I constantly need to tell him to eat with his mouth closed (might have something to do with the dental bridge he has but I still don't want to hear and see it!)

He walks across the hard floors in the house dragging his feet, so it is like a shuffle..........

He is heavy handed in the kitchen so oven, fridge doors sound like they are being slammed shut, or mugs put down on counter tops, by an angry person all the time.

He also.............breathes 🙈 really loudly while we are watching TV. Drives me nuts.

Other non-dh noises that I can't deal with is metal on metal, the worst is sharping kitchen knives, dh needs to do it with the kitchen door shut and I sit in the living room with my fingers in my ears until he is done.

I am sure I annoy him just as much!!!!! 🤣

My husband breathes too loudly, too.

But, in his defence, his nose has been broken twice, so he can't help it.
I keep that thought to myself, but it still annoys me.

The noise of Harley Davidsons. Red mist descends big time.

Some twat across the road from me has a motorbike

Nothing as high falutin as a Harley Davidson, but the noise it makes just drives me mental.
It's high pitched and throaty.
So it goes right through me.

stopthepigeonstopthepigeon · 27/08/2024 11:20

Sniffing and coughing (a bit unreasonable I know), revving engines (especially motorbikes so damn LOUD) and high pitched shrieks (toddlers are good at this)

Any sort of repeated noise . Vernon Kay does a thing where people have to ring in to see if they're the first caller of the day. There are 5 of them and each time it makes a "Kerching" noise like a cash register. I have to turn it off or I'd end up shouting at the radio.

This made me laugh, I feel the same way about Jamie Oliver..
Every time he eats ANYTHING!!! He does this weird thing where the second it's in his mouth he'll close his eyes and make those mmmmmm sound. I hate it a lot! He also does a lot of double dipping and drops crumbs out of his mouth.
Annoying because I do think he's a very good cook but terrible table manners.
He sometimes has his younger children come in and try the meals, they also eat with their mouth open!

Another vote for men’s disgusting method of clearing their sinuses. DP does it all the time, it’s repulsive.

Why is it that women don’t have to make that noise?!

I think men like to spread and share their every bodily function as far and wide as possible. Dh’s sneezes drive me mad. An explosion literally from nowhere, with no attempt to contain it. I can see those pictogram droplets settling all over the kitchen every time Angry

Weepingwillows12 · 27/08/2024 10:37

I hate hate hate the shooting noises computer games make like Fortnite or call of duty. It's such an irritating noise.

I also dislike the noise of kids tablets playing in restaurants or public transport but I think I have taught myself to hate that after doing months of taking my kids to swimming lessons and this one lady would walk in to the viewing area and plonk her little one on the floor at the front with really annoying games on at full volume every week completely oblivious of the looks everyone was giving her. Once when someone asked her to turn it down she said no as she's not doing any harm. Once it starts to annoy you I think you listen for it more and it gets to me quick. Don't remember being that fussed about the noise before.

TeamPolin · 27/08/2024 10:28

Sloppy eating sounds. Can't cope with slurps and lip smacking...

@HolidayAtNight - my husband is an extremely loud sneezer, but he sneezes at least a dozen times in a row. It's like an A-WHAAAHUGHEE every time. After the fourth I'm fantasising about hitting him round the head with a frying pan.

Oh God, my mum used to do a sneeze that resembled your phonetic version🤣 She only did 3 or 4 in a row, but they were LOUD and every single one made me jump, even though I knew they were coming!

Chewing.

Also, that sniff. Often by men which comes from their toes. A hacking sniff. It’s utterly disgusting and can often be accompanied by a spit.

Yes men sniffing, sighing, hacking, spitting, tapping, knee bouncing

It always feels like they're trying to get attention or "look at me I'm a man!" and makes me roll my eyes

Men's sudden loud sneezing, when they roar totally unexpectedly.

I will grudgingly tolerate whistling, but in a confined space (looking at you, older men on public transport) it's such a jerk thing to do.

People who make sex noises while eating.

Titanicpopcornsweets · 27/08/2024 08:58

To be honest most unnecessary human noise pisses me off.

Coughing
Dramatic sneezing
Plate scraping
Noisy cars/motorbikes
Too loud supermarket tannoys
Shrieking laughter
Loud ringtones
Ice cream van tune
People who bang things unnecessarily. There's a woman at work who just generally bangs everything down for no apparent reason

Everyone just needs to be quieter.

Fountofwisdom · 27/08/2024 08:42

Slurping hot drinks. So many people I know have to slurp a cup of tea rather than just drink it silently. Wtf is the matter with them? Also once sat next to a woman on the tube who was eating a yoghurt. She scraped every last bit out of the pot with a plastic spoon and the sound of it almost made me murderous.

BeatsAntique · 27/08/2024 08:23

I make that noise Im afraid. But I dont like it when I hear it or others doing it

Hopefully no one on this thread ever suffers with their sinusus. Theres often nothing specific to blow out so it causes lots of sniffing as theres no point blowing.

my office was previously next to an outdoor gym,
the annoyance of the squeaky equipment
mainly the annoyance of the bouncing ball
that and the weekly Strimmer and lawn mower

Screaming children. Thumping bass. Shrieking laughter.

Usernamesarenoteasy · 27/08/2024 06:25

My fucking stupid neighbours dog. They regularly shut it in the garden. where all it does is bark the whole time. And when I say regularly, it's regularly in the middle of the night. For example from just before midnight until 1am this morning......

Auburngal · 27/08/2024 06:21

People who have the button noises option on when they use their phone.

i am so tempted to swipe the phone off them, go and switch it off on the settings and hand it back to them.

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 27/08/2024 06:17

Any repetitive noise gets right on my tits if its an avoidable one that isn't stopped asap!

InMySpareTime · 27/08/2024 06:13

The sound of leaf blowers. Loads of my neighbours have gardeners, and sometimes I can't sit in the garden for hours because of the sound (and wafting diesel smell) of leaf blowers in garden after garden.
The anxiety-inducing be-BEEP- be-BEEP sound the cash machine makes when you try to deposit a cheque or cash. I have to either send DH or go into the bank, which is only open short weird hours.
The sound of FIL's front teeth clacking together whenever he chews makes me want to cry or run away. Decorum prevents either action so I just die a little inside.
The sound of a wasp flying indoors sets off a fear response in some deep recess of my brain.

Inspireme2 · 27/08/2024 05:41

Plate scrapping
Eating with you mouth open
Sniffing
Licking fingers
