Does this mean we are doomed…?

Came home to find a dead bird on my doorstep… Literally can’t fathom how it would end up there. Live in the countryside but how did it get there???
Of course the ring doorbell isn’t charged, so can’t check if it was put there. I’m SO freaked out right now after googling ‘dead bird on doorstep’. It wasn’t a little bird either - some sort of crow looking thing. I was screaming and my partner removed it, so I didn’t get a good look. Anyone else out there ever experienced anything similar?

We get birds flying into our windows. I know when it’s happened as there’s a dusty splat mark where it hit.

Zeeze · 25/08/2024 07:35

One morning we awoke to find my DD’s rescue budgie dead. On the doorstep was also a dead bird. Further down the road was another dead bird lying on the pavement. I live in central London. It was autumn I don’t know if this is why.

Nothing bad happened except DD being upset about the budgie (he was originally taken in by a rescue she was volunteering at but couldn’t fly with the others in the flock so she took him home).

In fact thinking about it after that things improved, both financially and in other ways.

Your where screaming at a dead bird!!!!
Have you been to the Sistine chapel in the past by any chance op

Hahahaha I thought that too 🤣

It’s a dead bird. Not a dead human.

Christ alive how do people get through life.

😂😂

I came home to a dead bird on the doorstep once. I chose to assume a local cat was in love with me and brought me its finest gift. Don’t recall anything bad happening afterwards.

Only when it's in your bed.

Tbh I’d be a bit freaked out by a horse’s head on the doorstep too, it would be hard to fit in the bin

Marnieloves · 25/08/2024 07:25

I understand OP - I’d definitely be worried it was a bad omen! But then I’m a bit ‘woo’. I found a dead bee on my floor the other morning, with no idea how it could have got into the house (it wasn’t there the night previously and I’ve never seen bees inside before! No windows or doors opened etc). I was worried it was a bad omen but when I checked online it was actually a very good omen! I also checked when a moth flew into me what that could mean. Although Mumsnet isn’t a very spiritual place it seems, lots of people believe that things like this do have meaning. I’m always searching for stuff like this! If it makes you feel any better, a dead bird is not a bad omen from a spiritual perspective, instead perhaps representing a time of change rather than actual death. But then again, it could just be that a cat dropped it there, like a PP said!

Ha! I used to do customer services for a similar org. and someone called up because they’d found a dead hedgehog in their garden and didn’t know what it was. They, too, were aghast that we wouldn’t go and remove it for them.

Jobs like that really do make you wonder if you’re the only normal person left on the planet, don’t they.

Pest removal will take it away if you aren't up to it yourself (op, I mean!)

I had pest removal round for a mice problem a while back (unfortunately, live ones) and while he was there he took a call asking him to remove a dead fox.

Separately at my last school, one of the biology teachers who was fab, would collect road kill for dissections. They dissected a fox once. I could never teach biology, it was so gross

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 25/08/2024 07:21

Apparently...

'Sometimes, the presence of a dead bird on your doorstep can signify a transition that you need to go through, a relinquishing of negative behaviors that have impacted your life'

I would guess it is a parable from that your Ring doorbell battery is 'dead' and should be replaced. Clever stuff by those Amazon people, it's why you see so many Amazon vehicles about - they're delivering dead birds to Ring doorbell owners with uncharged batteries. (I think.)

LeontineFrance · 25/08/2024 07:20

Pigeon did the same into my front window and ended up on bonnet of my car. What a thump when he hit the window. We were watching telly and felt it for it.

I actually once took a call on an out of hours emergency council line from a lady with a dead crow in her garden. She wanted someone to remove it now and was very upset. She told me people were stopping to look at it and her house too. It baffled me the strength of her feeling, but I was later told that in some villages a dead crow on your property is considered to be a real harbinger of doom and frightens folk.
No the council wouldn't go out at 10pm on a Saturday night (I didn't ask though tbf), and the lady was very angry at any suggestions she could ask a neighbour for help to remove it. She was mad at the council too but don't know what happened in the end.
This was 10 years ago now but definitely is a 'thing'.

Was driving on the road where I lived and a pigeon fell to the ground right in front of my car. I stopped to see if it was ok and an elderly couple explained that they had found it injured and thrown it into the air 'to help it fly to safety'. And of course it had crashed to earth.

I exchanged pigeon-related pleasantries, got into my car and pulled off. Wham! It landed on my bonnet. They had made a second attempt.

It was the most counterproductive attempt at kindness I have ever witnessed.

Btw, It's a bit sad that there have been so many needlessly harsh responses on the thread. I suspect that the OP talked up her shock a bit for the sake of humour. Seems daft to castigate her.

Edited

Haha omg your neighbours sound very daft

Mumoftwo1316 · 25/08/2024 07:14

I don't even live in the countryside and I've seen dead pigeons outside my house. Even my pre-schooler didn't freak out when she saw a dead one that was being pecked by crows. I told her that's just what crows naturally eat as they're carrion birds and it's good for them (rather than takeaway leftovers!)

It's the circle of life

user68712226 · 25/08/2024 07:12

So far this summer we have had a bat circling like crazy in the spare room like some kind of high speed Halloween attraction, a kestrel in the kitchen (flew in through the bifolds and thought he could get out of the roof lantern), a very large dragonfly dead on DDs pillow since it got under her bed canopy and couldn’t get out and a dead fox on the road opposite the house which a lazy council worker wouldn’t move so it now has white lines running over its body.

we’re fucked on your logic op. No need for screaming.

OlPackingTape · 25/08/2024 07:11

We had a pheasant fly into a window at such speed that it smashed through the window and then ran all round the house covered in blood and feathers, poor thing. Very sad and very gross.

saveforthat · 25/08/2024 07:09

Well at least it wasn't a fish which would indicate that a friend or acquaintance now sleeps with the fishes.

Is seeing a dead bird a thing then?

Buffypaws · 25/08/2024 07:01

glacancalman · 24/08/2024 23:48

Screaming? Over a dead bird? Did you visit the Sistine Chapel a while ago?

Tis a good job you didn't see the decapitated pigeon that was outside my house a few weeks ago.

An unfortunate pigeon landed on my sister’s balcony - there’s a tiny gap on the floor where the cat must have got its claw through. All they found was a severed leg… it was disgusting.

BoobyDazzler · 25/08/2024 06:54

Have you never been outside before Op?

We had a dead pigeon on the grass verge outside our house. I left it a few days to see if a fox or the council would deal with it for me. They didn’t, so I shovelled it into a bag for life (the irony), and put it in my wheelie bin.

No bad luck to report. In fact a few days later I won a bottle of Ribena at a tombola.

🤣

aphroditeflighty · 25/08/2024 06:47

Since moving to the countryside, I've lost count of the number of dead animals I've had to deal with. Our cats have brought indoors, live and dead mice, shrews, a blackbird, a woodpecker, a snake. I've also had to remove 4 ticks from myself this year (I seem to get 4 or 5 a year). It was an unexpected challenge when I first moved here, but I've got less squeamish over the years.

WhatNext24 · 25/08/2024 06:45

A fox left it there or a bigger bird of prey dropped it mid-flight (this is a definite thing).

ThePrologue · 25/08/2024 06:38

Sorry all these bird-confident PPs have been crowing over your scare, OP...
But screaming and then trying to google 'dead bird on doorstep' is a rather extreme reaction to a commonplade event.
Unless of course, you are undertaking criminal activitiy, and you've tried to talke the territory of a a rival OCG
