Is DH thick as mince?

maftin · 24/08/2024 20:51

We are abroad on hol atm, 6th floor room.
DH took DD,4, back for a snack and play in our room at hottest part of day.
Over dinner tonight he told me he left DD playing on the balcony while he had a shower. It's a glass wall shorter than she is with a little wall she could also climb up.
He says she is very sensible, sees no issue at all, I am fucking livid he did this. AIBU?

Yes, shorter than the child once she's stepped up onto the wall part. Meaning she could lean over and tip over the glass part, because kids do climb stuff!

If the barrier were just solid glass, taller than the kid, nothing to step up onto, there'd be no problem would there?

that could have been worded a bit nicer…
Either way taller or shorter, you don’t leave a kid unattended on a balcony - so no, I don’t agree that there’s no problem if it’s solid glass. She could easily stand on a chair and trip or a bunch of other scenarios.

So not shorter than dd…. Lol then it’s not the same thing

He is wrong, obviously but what a horrible thing to say about your husband.

Considering he could have killed their daughter , no that's fine.

HauntedbyMagpies · 24/08/2024 22:43

You need to NEVER leave your DD in his care, ever again. EVER. She won’t be safe

woodenicelollystick · 24/08/2024 22:27

I live on the continent and I think I know the type of balcony you mean. There's a low wall, then a small gap, say 5-8 cm, above which sits the glass of the balcony. Basically the wall raises the glass, and therefore the total balcony height, but unfortunately also acts as a step should a child wish to get a leg up.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 24/08/2024 22:26

I actually can't read these sort of posts as they are too upsetting. Just had a vision of my DD aged 4 doing the same and it made me feel like I couldn't breathe. Your DH is lucky nothing happened. I'm so glad your DD is safe. Call him every horrible name under the holiday sun - I know I'd not hold back. And make him take another shower - cold this time - to wash the idiotic ways out of his thick as mince brain.

Absolute bollocks. Should she have said 'Awww he's been such a silly billy bless his little cotton socks"? No. He's a fucking idiot and is definitely thicker than mince.

Caerulea · 24/08/2024 22:02

I could literally make burgers for months with the amount of mince your husband is!

StormingNorman · 24/08/2024 22:01

Thick as mince is a very generous description. There are a few other names that come to mind!

If he's not stupid he must be homicidal - which would you prefer?

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 24/08/2024 22:00

@maftin

He only told you because some other adult or family in another room nearby saw !

What a load of bullshit about being concerned that housekeeping may come in to do the room whilst he is in the shower - is there no ' do not disturb ' signs ?

p.s. he is more than as thick as mince, he is a fucking idiot !!!

Thoughtful2355 · 24/08/2024 21:59

definitely thick as shit that one

I'd say it was pretty accurate to be fair.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 24/08/2024 21:58

You're on the 6th floor with a balcony wall shorter than a 4 year old?

Yes, he's an idiot. But who designed that??

Allthehorsesintheworld · 24/08/2024 21:57

My blood ran cold reading your first post.
Has he not seen any news this summer? Several young adults have died falling over balconies in Spain and Ibiza iirc.
What a stupid man.

Member869894 · 24/08/2024 21:57

That really does take the stupidity biscuit

Sheeplesss · 24/08/2024 21:55

I wouldn't stay in a place that is potentially so risky, no more than I would book a villa with an open pool with young children.
Things happen in a second.

Bunnycat101 · 24/08/2024 21:54

My husband is more laissez faire than me and does things I wouldn’t but he has always preferred a holiday somewhere on the ground floor because he’s scared of small children and balconies. There is literally no way he’d have left a 4yo alone on a balcony that height.

nosleepforme · 24/08/2024 21:53

maftin · 24/08/2024 21:26

@WiddlinDiddlin
Yes that, so the wall bit with a little ledge she can step up on is about 20cm and glass up to her height above that.

So not shorter than dd…. Lol then it’s not the same thing

RabbitsRock · 24/08/2024 21:51

Bloody hell! It really doesn’t bear thinking about OP. Somebody up there likes your DD. Thank goodness she’s ok.

IAmJohnMajor · 24/08/2024 21:51

I went cold reading that.

I think I'd have to send him out of my sight for several days and I'd still utterly furious.

I'm hoping this is made up (though I hear you say not so). But who would take take a cavalier risk with a young child life, as though very young children would have any clue of the consequences of following their curiosity or whatever little spontaneous thing might see them exploring over the wall.

nosleepforme · 24/08/2024 21:51

I’d be fuming. But I’d also be scared leaving my kids with Dh which is so sad

Bestfootforward11 · 24/08/2024 21:51

I feel anxious just reading this!

maftin · 24/08/2024 21:51

I'm going to hide this now as some of the replies are getting a bit odd.
DD is very tall so she's in age 7 clothes. No we didn't check the height of the balconies or know what room we were going to be in, the hotel is full of families, it's 8 floors high.
He was incredibly stupid but he's not playing mind games.

Invisimamma · 24/08/2024 21:49

What a bloody idiot. Hopefully he now knows how dangerous this was.

Was there a chair and/or table on the balcony too? This always gives me the absolute fear as children can use them as a step to climb onto.

Some people seem to lose all common sense on holiday. Once watched a couple leave their young kids in the toddler pool to go for lunch, maybe 4 & 5yrs old, they said it was fine because it was only shallow, as if that wasn't bad enough it was only a step over into the main much deeper pool.
