AIBU to say it's not "ect"

I've seen about 8 threads in the last 2 days with posters writing ect when they obviously mean etc. I probably am being U but it really does irrationally fucking irritate me!

I need to get out more, yes. I've had two (big) glasses of wine 😂.

So, am I?

And my point is that people who had the right opportunities for education but waste them can’t describe themselves as having a lack of education. They can describe themselves as coming from a culture or background that did not value education. But they had the opportunity right there.

Think it might be archaic English that we exported, stopped using and then object to when we get it back. Like Halloween.

Yes, it was an OE word, went to USA with the MAyflower passengers and stuck.
We stopped using it when someone woke up to the fact that is one of the ugliest words in the English language!
Got isn't much better. What is wrong with 'I have' rather than 'I've got' (i have got an apple - the got is unnecessary here, you can say I've an apple)

Were you in the same homes with the same parents? Because that is far more relevant to the culture, poverty and lack of opportunity referred to than the school you attended.

Yeah I can buy that argument in terms of overall achievement, but I think it’s a total cop out to say that having parents who are poor or not well educated themselves means you can’t shut the fuck up in class and listen when the teacher explains apostrophes.

Catdoorman · 24/08/2024 10:53

Or should of, instead of should have.

lys are missing from so many words these days..
I want it so bad...

I always think of an English teacher colleague telling his class "adverbs are your friends".

I’m working it out… no luck so far 😀

Et voila, proving the point that meaning doesn't always shine through!
(that wasn't a pop at you. @Ilovecleaning , it just made me smile!)

Segue, not segway, surely!

In France grammar is a core course subject in schools (separate from 'French' which is more of a spelling/comprehension and in time, literary course).
So grammar (rules, exception, irregular verbs, tenses) is taught formally from the age of 5/6 years to about 14/15; a long time is devoted to making sure you master your own language. All teachers without exception have impeccable grammar and spelling.
It used to be unusual for anyone to have bad grammar, but things are changing, sadly, for many reasons, but bad spelling or bad grammar will still disqualify you from many jobs or opportunities; it's still a very low bar in selection standards.
Languages are taught in the same way, grammar is separate to the spoken word. English has a vast vocabulary but is grammatically a very simple language - ask almost any foreigner.
I don't know why so many people can't write or speak it properly, but I have noticed that the older generation as a whole - even those from very modest backgrounds - don't seem to have this problem.

I learnt so much about grammar and punctuation from a german lady I worked with!

I keep hearing a apple, a elephant - which is much harder to say!

Yes, when did this one start? I'm secondary and it's only been about the last three years. Suddenly, ALL the children say, "I did it on accident!" (Except those who read a lot.)

It's US phrasing via YouTube

While @Emptyandsad is correct about how language evolves, I think mutations which cause a loss of functionality should be resisted if possible.
The purpose of language is for communication, there are some words where altering their meaning can impair this.

Yes, yes and yes again.

I see so many social media posts where the language has been so mangled it is incomprehensible.

And anyone who writes "u" and "ur" needs a slap round the face with a wet kipper.

Two I hate:
▪︎ To 'step foot' in a place; it's not 'step foot', it's 'set foot'
▪︎ The creeping americanisms which are becoming common, e.g. "it's not that big of a deal". We always used to say "it's not that big a deal". What is the "of" doing there?

Edited

You 'triggered' me!
not that big of a deal... ARRRRGGHH
and
I'm excited for Christmas/our holiday..
No, you are looking forward to... You can be excited on behalf of a person (The prologues is running in the Olympics, I'm excited for her) but not an inanimate thing

The little thing that's been bugging me lately is this.!

     .! or .?

Lot's of people don't read much - I get that - but surely they see advertising?

I do think many people are just very unobservant and don't pay attention.

It's a typo; when you select ? or ! on a phone keypad you have to go through the full stop key (short press for full stop, hold to select a range of punctuation) and people are inadvertently doing the short press first

Ilovecleaning · 24/08/2024 10:30

Oh no! Not you again! 🤣
I suspect you are being purposely provocative. No more responses from me.

I have no idea who you are where you from the teacher thread and thought a job was more important then a person's health and how horrible the parents and kids where. That's funny if you where because on this thread you've just said how it's the teachers being childish and bullying others.

Speaking as someone who has always struggled with literacy years ago at school you were out on the slow table no great support
it can be soul destroying for some smug self righteous twat pointing out your errors

for the life of me I can’t see the need
I think anyone who does this is no better than a bully

I agree. I can pedant with the best of them, but I would never correct someone’s spelling or grammar. I think it’s rude and unkind.

I think the fact you think that response is acceptable proves my point. You know what makes me cringe, adults who think their above others, who are bullies and can't understand that others have a different set of circumstances to themselves.

American, out of interest? I haven't heard anyone else use it.

I still can't say "another think coming though" although I accept it's grammatically correct. I just say another thing coming really quickly so it's ambiguous 😂

This is one of my pet peeves!

It's another think coming!! And one is not preaching to the choir, one is preaching to the converted (because it means you're telling us what we already know/believe, not all of the choir may do so!)

I know. These were high school teachers. Young ones and only a small group of them. Nevertheless, not very nice.

PS - I see how you might think they were parents. No, this was in the staff room. I don’t want to give the impression that it was relentless joking every day. It was childish really.
