Bayesian tragedy over reported

AIBU to think that this tragedy is being vastly over reported simply because it involved very rich people? Why did it require live coverage or the effort to recover bodies on major news channels.

No idea who they are either unless you can give a surname, but celebrity relationship breakups should not be mainstream news, and unless you're still in your teens, 5 years is not a long relationship duration.

I don't think you understood the cultural impact of their relationship and the business involved.

fc123 · 23/08/2024 19:55

The 'over reporting' is because of the court case , the perceived fraud and the unbelievable coincidence that the 2 defendants died a couple of days apart and n freak accidents a few weeks after being acquitted.

Unfortunate turn of phrase. Sounds unintelligent.

How so?
.
Just realised there were two puns there. Neither intended as it happens.

They are celebrities. Just because they aren't the traditional movie star celebs doesn't mean they shouldn't be reported on.

LOL you reported that! Tommy has a talent but the other one, none.

5 years?

I think the BBC reported on Angelina & Brad's split

@Desrae i am yacht crew and I can assure you there is fuckery. We have just spent 2 months off the coast in Sicily. Whether or not the caprain is found culpable in some way, there will definitely be elements that were missed. The most extraordinary one currently being that the boat dragged anchor quite significantly and no one appears to have been on anchor watch. During a big storm, that is a massive fucking deal. There has been speculation that the tender wasn’t put away properly, creating a gap for water to get into the boat. Again, this could not have happened in the face of a storm. I fully believe every crew member was experienced enough to cope with the coming storm and, by law, drills are done monthly and there are some interesting anomalies in how the events unfolded. However, even within the industry (where it is widely believed that there was more to the story) there is a sense that we should stop speculating and wait to see what comes from the investigation. The boat is British flagged and the investigation will be exhaustive. Foul play should not be dismissed

Of course there is fuckery going on.
The road collision of the other business partner could have been set up as the car that hit him was an innocent life cal driver but who knows if something spooked her just prior.

I find this interesting, I wonder what the investigation will deliver

As for the op I think there is over reporting for this level of wealth to an extent

It's also pretty awful to imagine the event

You're missing the point - even if the whole world had heard of them, a celebrity girlfriend/boyfriend relationship breaking up after not particularly long shouldn't be headline news in any publication beyond 'Heat' magazine.

Things are newsworthy when they are unusual or unexpected. Also there has been some suspense around finding the bodies. Yoh might well question what’s newsworthy more broadly but this definitely qualifies as being newsworthy by todays standards.

Maybe someone else has already mentioned this also - but on top of the broader interest of the unusual accident and its surrounding facts, the location, the backstory of the owner and his recent court success, the conspiracy theory re partner death, high profile guests, etc. Which are enough to make it a big thing anyway.

It's also August, when there is not a lot of other main news - Parliaments closed, people on holiday, not a lot of business news, Olympics are finished and Paralympics not yet started, people are fed up of the various wars, riots have died away again, ...so there isn't a lot of other real news for them to focus on. ,

twilightermummy · 23/08/2024 19:45

The tragedy caused by another pathetic man of that poor woman and her beautiful children was off the BBC homepage by the next morning.

It's unbelievable to me how much this has been reported however, I do love a good conspiracy...embarrassingly and ashamedly enough 😬

Of course on a serious note, I feel extremely sad for the mother of the 18 year old who had everything to live for. I think the story of the survivor who had to hold her baby above water is the stuff of nightmares too.

It's not so much that this has been over-reported but that other tragedies, involving 'ordinary' people, particularly impoverished people or minority groups, are under-reported - almost taken for granted.

Hard to justify this when a pair of Love Island competitors that most people have never heard of splitting up after a short relationship is the BBC's idea of headline news.

@Desrae i see your point about the storm - but it could also have been a perfect opportunity. So many unanswered questions at this point

The thing is we will never know, because with thhings like these, the truth never comes out.

LindorDoubleChoc · 23/08/2024 19:37

Yanbu, I totally agree. It's glamorous, it's a super yacht, a billionaire's family. Completely out of proportion reporting. Compare it to the reporting on a woman and 3 children murdered in a house fire in the same few days.

dobblevit · 23/08/2024 19:36

I'm in France just now and it has been all over the TV and Radio news bulletins this week, despite none of the people involved being French or even known to the average French person.

Desrae · 23/08/2024 19:34

@tsalty not ruling out negligence, but those thinking conspiracy are barking up the wrong tree arent they. Unless those billionaire bankers somehow managed to cook up that storm.

Storm in a teacup. Couldn't give a toss myself. There's no reason to be reported to this degree

Unfortunate turn of phrase. Sounds unintelligent.

Althenameshavegone · 23/08/2024 19:24

Yep same as the titan sub disaster. I don’t think the public interest is so much about the people, it’s the unusual and “sensational” nature of being a Luxury yacht, as per the sub. It’s an awful tragedy but doesn’t deserve to be headline news for days.
