Bayesian tragedy over reported

AIBU to think that this tragedy is being vastly over reported simply because it involved very rich people? Why did it require live coverage or the effort to recover bodies on major news channels.

It's a huge story. A unprecedented freak accident. Missing families. A water spout which I'd never heard off. Plus millions of people love Below Deck. So there's a fascination with super yachts, crew and charters. And it's august which is often a slow news month.

So sad for the families involved.

I was only saying this to my OH the other night about "Below Deck" we love it but there was an episode a year or so ago when the Cpt & First Mate went to bed & left one of the lads on overnight duty & a storm came & he was dragging his heels about waking the crew & he got the head eaten off him, rightly so, things change pretty fast at sea but with satellite etc what happened to The Bayesian shouldn't have happened

I know that the rich & famous always draw click but it's more than that & exactly what you said, an unprecedented tragic, freak accident

FinneganFois · 23/08/2024 22:46

Does anyone else suspect foul play regarding this yacht sinking, after a "water spout" freak weather event?
The Italian ship builder chief executive has hinted that the crew were responsible, they must have left a hatch open.
Regarding the very recent court case, Hewlett Packard must have been fuming, as they thought the company they bought had a hugely inflated valuation, therefore instigated the fraud case, which cleared both co defendants. They must have had a very clued in, clever lawyer, who also died on the yacht along with his wife.
This happened in the early hours of Monday 19th August, hours after the co defendant, Mr. Chamberlain, died in a road accident on Saturday 17th August. Of course it could be a coincidence . . . . .

I think there's probably a lot more news to come once the boat is recovered and examined. In theory it should not have sunk. It's the boat making news rather than the people on board

A bit unfair, I think! Its a combination of both.

Fizbosshoes · 23/08/2024 22:29

Jay Slater and Michael Mosely were I'm the headlines until their bodies were found.

A huge yacht capsizing I guess creates more news (rightly or wrongly) because it isn't a regular occurrence. I think the migrant boats sinking, or people drowning gets less coverage because it has happened time and again. It is no less sad for the people involved but I imagine news outlets don't report it because a) it isn't an isolated incident and b) the victims are essentially anonymous.

localnotail · 23/08/2024 22:28

Some people are finding it hard to understand that reporting ordinary people dying would always be somewhat different to reporting the death of someone who was quite extraordinary. Maybe it is "unfair", but this was always the way!

I bet they were moaning about Queen's funeral, too - why all the fuss, some privileged old lady...

16 migrants have drowned in the channel this year, but nobody notices because a blow up dinghy isn’t a posh boat.

This.

coldcallerbaiter · 23/08/2024 22:16

If you look at your local newspaper online you will see tons of murders and serious crimes that go unreported by the national news.

PoliteOtter · 23/08/2024 21:52

Icanttakethisanymore · 23/08/2024 19:48

Things are newsworthy when they are unusual or unexpected. Also there has been some suspense around finding the bodies. Yoh might well question what’s newsworthy more broadly but this definitely qualifies as being newsworthy by todays standards.

I think this. I felt so sad about the mum and her three beautiful children but I am however intrigued by the (also sad) yacht story. It doesn’t make the deaths on the boat more or less sad.

localnotail · 23/08/2024 21:34

I think some people on here have no distinction between "privileged" and an "achiever". Maybe read up on Mike Lynch before you post this shit about "privileged white man"? Guy was literally from Ilford, one of the shitty areas of London, mum was a nurse, dad was a firefighter. And yet, he died a billionaire because of his software company he set up while still at Uni, he had PhD in artificial intelligence and was universally considered a UK's version of Bill Gates. Hardly a rich playboy born with a silver spoon in his mouth, no?

Winrus · 23/08/2024 21:25

It is big news and suspicious as hell given the death of the other guy.

MintyNew · 23/08/2024 21:18

angeldelite · 23/08/2024 17:10

Yes it’s over reported because society does value rich white men more but also it’s been an exceptionally slow news week I guess.

I agree. I can't care about people who have probably had the best and most privileged time on this earth.

LaurieFairyCake · 23/08/2024 21:15

Well I don't suspect foul play Confused it was a tornado

It was all just a coincidence

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 23/08/2024 21:13

It's news because it is unusual. There are very few billionaires and an even spaller proportion of them die on big shiny yachts. We are still talking about the titanic over 100 years later.

There are many migrants in boats. There are many people bitten by dangerous dogs. There are many women killed by men that they are in a relationship with, or are trying to leave. These things are all sadly so common that they cease to be news any more.

BiddyPop · 23/08/2024 21:02

InevitableNameChanger · 23/08/2024 20:48

It's actually very rare for yachts to sink like that, that's part of what makes it so newsworthy.

There were a lot of yachts sunk in Carriacou in the Caribbean in July, due to Hurricane Beryl.

But those were generally small yachts so not newsworthy in the same way, and in a developing country, unlike Italy.

I am waiting for an official report for the reasons why, as there have been lots of speculation and blame throwing going on, and while I have seen some commentary about things that make good sense to me with some sailing background, I don't know enough about boats of that size nor of the waters around the area to know if those can be trusted. And the high net worth of the owner and his guests will make a lot of people try to move any potential blame far away from themselves.

No idea who was on board this super boat🤷🏼‍♀️ the coverage reminds me of the submersible that imploded (Titan).

@Desrae i am yacht crew and I can assure you there is fuckery. We have just spent 2 months off the coast in Sicily. Whether or not the caprain is found culpable in some way, there will definitely be elements that were missed. The most extraordinary one currently being that the boat dragged anchor quite significantly and no one appears to have been on anchor watch. During a big storm, that is a massive fucking deal. There has been speculation that the tender wasn’t put away properly, creating a gap for water to get into the boat. Again, this could not have happened in the face of a storm. I fully believe every crew member was experienced enough to cope with the coming storm and, by law, drills are done monthly and there are some interesting anomalies in how the events unfolded. However, even within the industry (where it is widely believed that there was more to the story) there is a sense that we should stop speculating and wait to see what comes from the investigation. The boat is British flagged and the investigation will be exhaustive. Foul play should not be dismissed

Agreed. At best there was some kind of terrible negligence or major design flaw.

It's truly unusual and I think everyone in the yaching industry is following it closely for that reason.

I think people who don't know much about yachting could easily assume that this was somehow normal but it's hugely strange.

I did see a theory that the keel wasn't fully down but I expect it is going to take a long time before there are any clear conclusions. I guess hopefully meteorological data will assist too

I thought it was perhaps reported so much because people hoped there could be an air pocket in the boat and maybe, just maybe, someone had survived. A bit like when the submarine looking at the Titanic disappeared, people were hoping it had got lost and would be found and the people saved although all the signs were always there that they had sadly perished. I think that until bodies are found people hope for a miracle and that keeps the story alive,

Yes - the yacht’s makers thought there could be enough air trapped in pockets inside the hull for someone to survive for about 140 hours. A small chance of survival but still a chance.

wastingtimeonhere · 23/08/2024 20:13

People would also presume a boat of that size, cost, spec would be self righting, 'unsinkable' so it was not protected by the money invested in it. The occupants of the boat obviously cause public interest.
There were surviving occupants of the super yacht, so hopefully, light will be shed on the reality of the tragedy.

Channel migrants in boats are in barely seaworthy boats and attempt to enter the country illegally. The reasons for trying are viewed suspiciously by huge numbers. They aren't going to garner the same personal interest if it goes wrong.

LindorDoubleChoc · 23/08/2024 20:10

fc123 · 23/08/2024 19:55

The 'over reporting' is because of the court case , the perceived fraud and the unbelievable coincidence that the 2 defendants died a couple of days apart and n freak accidents a few weeks after being acquitted.

No, I don't think so. I think it would have had the same level of reportage without the court case and the coincidence.

The coincidence has had the briefest of mentions really. But doubtless there are now hundreds of journalists all over this digging deeper. It will be interesting to read their findings - meanwhile, everything else feels all out of proportion.

fc123 · 23/08/2024 20:07

To be fair the BBC is struggling for stories as this just popped up.

I don't think you understood the cultural impact of their relationship and the business involved.

You're quite right, the whole thing has completely passed me by.
