Secret eating

Curious how common this is? I go into the office about once a week and almost always get a secret unhealthy snack for the train home. My dh and I try to eat healthily most of the time, but we're not crazily strict. I think there's something about the freedom of a treat that only I know about. Is this messed up or totally normal 😁? It's definitely gluttonous, because I get home to a meal he's made, but I do always manage to finish that too... 🙈

I get the having something for yourself thing, I get this sometimes if I have a day off and don't specifically tell DH, or pop for a coffee while I'm out doing something. There's no reason for me not to tell him, or to tell him really, but it's that bit of space just for me...

Same with a cafe stop on a long car journey.

I think @Pinkypinkyplonk is joking….

Mumsnet will no doubt leap to tell you that this is ‘grim’ or ‘bizarre’ or that you must have an eating disorder, but in the real world, I suspect this is something that’s actually really, really common - a classic ‘small guilty pleasure’ kind of indulgence.

Basically, if it’s along the lines of a packet of Doritos or a bar of Dairy Milk, fine. I wouldn’t stress about it. Carry on enjoying your secret daily treat without judgement.

Obviously more of an issue if it’s a KFC Family Bucket or an entire roast pig

I now have an image of the OP sitting on the train, tucking into an entire medieval banquet, with a whole roast pig as the centrepiece. I like it.

Why wouldn't your DP approve?

Ha ha, cos I’m scoffing without him!!

Mercurial123 · 22/08/2024 06:47

Calling food "naughty" is also weird.

Pinkypinkyplonk · 21/08/2024 19:05

I stash mine in my car, I eat them on my way home when I’m really tired, stressed and need that pick me up. By the time I get home my sugars are up and I’m in a better mood than if I hadn’t had them! But I know my hubby wouldn’t approve. ( what he doesn’t know won’t hurt, right?)
But also. If they’re in the house, I don’t get any!

Why wouldn't your DP approve?

TheClawDecides · 21/08/2024 23:51

Yeah it's messed up.

You're just an adult having a snack, like millions of adults do every day.

I do this fairly frequently. Also hide the wrappers under other stuff in the bin so I don’t get ‘caught’. It’s not really ‘secret’ snacking as much as not sharing the minutiae of your day or having to ask partner if they want a treat too and what treat and save it for after dinner to enjoy tgether or eat before seperatly blah blah blah. I think it is about retaining some independence and autonomy in a relationship.

there’s been several MN threads on it which I always read with interest and it’s always split enough with some people thinking it’s totally bonkers and very unhealthy for your relationship with food and partner. And also many people also do it and have a happy relationship with both

Wouldn't true independence and autonomy be eating whatever, without the extra thoughts or work or hiding?

SocksAndTheCity · 21/08/2024 23:44

This is one of the weirdest posts I've ever read on Mumsnet, and that bar was already set pretty high.

Since when is eating some food without broadcasting it to the world a 'secret', or worse 'naughty'? 'Gluttonous', ffs - have we travelled back in time a few decades?

Thatcat · 21/08/2024 23:41

A secret snack on the train once a week. A secret from whom exactly?

I’m referring this to the MI5.

Woman buys chocolate bar for the train home.
what exactly is the issue???? I know MN is uptight but wow!
doing a line of coke or necking a bottle of vodka is weird but not having a snack on your commute home.

MoreCardassianThanKardashian · 21/08/2024 22:58

These responses are wild. Talk about draining the fun.

I secret eat. I do it aaallllll the time so it's not that much of a secret because I'm not losing weight.

If it goes from guilty pleasure to eating disorder, speak to someone.

Raaraathelionrah · 21/08/2024 22:30

Huh? So you buy food to eat on the train, that’s normal?! I don’t tell my husband when I eat - that’s mental 🤣 I have no idea what he does and it’s not my business

Jeannie88 · 21/08/2024 21:58

Ffs a secret snack on the way home? Not like you're drinking a bottle of vodka. Is this the world of problems on MN?

KeepinOn · 21/08/2024 21:58

Dammit I never even thought to do this when I was commuting to work. Missed out.

2AND2GC · 21/08/2024 21:53

I've got no problem with this whatsoever - a little naughty treat when you're on your own on the train. A little indulgence once in a while is good for the soul. I always get myself a hot chocolate or some chocolate buttons for the train home.

bellalou1234 · 21/08/2024 21:51

Sometimes I drive to mcdonalds for a cheeky big mac. I don't bring one back for dp

FuckThePoPo · 21/08/2024 21:50

What's the snack already!??!?

dontlookbackinangerr · 21/08/2024 21:49

I don't think it's weird, as long as you feel positive in yourself about it. I've done the same. Just knowing I'm acting and doing it for me and only me without any need for validation or having to explain to anyone.

ParrotPirouette · 21/08/2024 21:47

I live alone, who would I be keep a snack secret from?
