to think re-scanning 32 items out of a 66 item shop isn't a sensible check?

I'd used a self-scanner because it was a big shop and I'd carefully packed all my cold stuff together, heavy things at the bottom of bags, bread on top etc.

I don't mind being selected for a check, but when it's nearly half the items I just don't think it's reasonable. Apparently it's changed from ten items to a percentage of the shop (not sure whether that's value or number of items). There was nothing wrong with my scanning, so it wasn't as if it flagged a problem and asked for more, it was 30+ from the outset.

I'd have preferred it to have just sent me to a manned checkout to unload it all onto the belt if it needed so many to be re-scanned.

It took ages, while other people were waiting for approvals and help, and although the person doing it tried to be careful there really isn't enough space to unpack and re-pack carefully when you're scanning so much. And obviously they have to take from all levels of the bags, and the shopper can't touch it in case it looks like you're concealing something. I've come home and found my cheese has been ripped open and my chocolate eclairs have been squashed flat under my potatoes.

AIBU to think that 30+ items being re-scanned at the self-checkout is impractical as a check?

Is this normal practice in all supermarkets?

I've never done self-scan though I do use self-checkouts. I've never had a check except when the bloody scales don't pick something up. It would really piss me off.

Yes, normally the first time you use it to make sure you've understood how to do it and then randomly after that.

I don't mind it usually, but I think that proportion of a large shop is hopeless to do in the self-scan-checkout bit. They were designed for high-throughput with no packing and unpacking, not for checks taking that long.

Interesting that some supermarkets do send you an attached manned till, I think that's much better.

I just typed “male Karen” into YouTube and plenty of results came up!

How about if you just put Karen?
Because the term used was not "Male Karen"

Brefugee · 21/08/2024 14:54

show me an example of a man being called a "Karen"

i will continue to tell the staff to finish attending to me, if they interrupt me by wanting to do a scan, before attending other customers as much as i like, btw.

Wandering off in the middle of a job isn't "doing their job" it's rude and annoying.

All shops with self scan will Do random checks.

You can get your self banned from self scan as well. Say for instance leaving the whole shop because you got a check called.

And yet it is misogynistic, however much you disagree. Just as there are many racial slurs that some people don't mind, most find them offensive so we don't use them. Because we don't wish to offend.

Nadeed · 21/08/2024 14:15

This puts me off self scan. Life is too short.

Comedycook · 21/08/2024 14:11

I'd have told them I no longer want any of the items and to put them back.

creepywoman · 21/08/2024 14:09

To be honest though, to use the scanner service you need to accept their terms and conditions which likely warn you about the possibility of random scans including your entire shop.

you continued to use the scanner service with this information…it’s convenient sure, but the non-convenient aspects are part and parcel of using it. I can’t see them changing their business model and stopping the scans or not using the current store facilities to conduct these scans. However I think the algorithm will adjust based on you having compliant scans so you get them less. Whereas someone who has non-compliant scans will trigger them more often.

StMarieforme · 21/08/2024 13:58

Yes the damage that they do is ridiculous. TBH I think if they wanted to scan 32 of 66 I'd tell them to put it all back and leave!

PointsSouth · 21/08/2024 13:52

Whenever this "I'm not doing their job for them" thing comes up, I wonder why people who think that way go to supermarkets at all. I mean, there was a time when it was the job of shop staff to go and get the stuff off the shelves for you, while you stood there reading out your list. But no one in Sainsbury's expects them to now. No one says, 'I'm not walking all the way to sauces aisle for ketchup.'

I guess there must be some kind of acceptable period of time after which everyone accepts that a new way of doing things is now a normal way of doing things.

I don't use self-scanning myself, simply because there's a - what? - 20% chance that exactly this sort of check will happen, which'll add a good ten or fifteen minutes to my shop, as well as being irritating. And there's always the risk of collateral eclair damage. I'd rather spend an extra couple of minutes at the check out.

But this is not going to be a problem for long. Pretty soon - in fact, the technology already exists - you'll just go round the shop, pick up what you want and walk out. The tech will know what you walked out with and charge you accordingly.

I use 'Karen' to describe a type of behaviour, not a gender so spare me the 'misogynistic insults' line.

and yet it is still a revolting misogynistic slur. Pack it in. you know perfectly well what it means.

As for shop staff: well i wouldn't use "teacher voice" if they didn't keep wandering off to help other people instead of doing their job properly.

YouveGotAFastCar · 21/08/2024 13:33

DwightDFlysenhower · 21/08/2024 12:51

I meant fine for me as a shopper really @YouveGotAFastCar. I do understand they're combatting theft, but the self-checkout area wasn't designed for the high numbers of re-scans so it just blocks it up and they have to race through which leads to things getting damaged.

Perhaps they should have a dedicated till for re-scans over a certain number of items?

I think this must be individual shop policy - they do move you from self-scan to the manned till alongside at my store, if you need a full rescan.

I don't work for Sainsburys, by the way, and I think there are improvements that could be made, but also that unless people want self-scan to disappear, checks must be made, so it's always a balancing act.

It's particularly irritating when thieves near me don't bother with the self-scan machines and just run through holding a leg of lamb or a bottle of wine or whatever...

Brefugee · 21/08/2024 13:31

bord · 21/08/2024 12:52

Admittedly I considered it but then would have just had to go off and re-shop the same somewhere else. I felt committed to the shop by that point. But jeez yeah I'm not doing that at Sainsburys again!

i don't live in the uk but when i am there i tend to go to Sainsburys becuse i know where most things are.

They are constantly on at me to use the self check out and i am constantly replying that i am not going to collude in the loss of jobs in supermarkets. And if i am feeling particularly chatty i will point out how difficult it is for my elderly and frail mum, and how every time i have even tried to use their self check out it can't handle either my purchases or my foreign credit card.

One time i did use self check out - and this is the main reason i won't now - the assistant walked off and served someone else mid sentence. And as i hadn't paid i just left. The frozen food that i wanted for a quick dinner.

Wheelz46 · 21/08/2024 13:08

Our scan and go used to be 10 items but it's now changed to a % of the shop so if they rescan low value items it's going to increase the number of items required to scan.

Agree it's pretty annoying so I try to have a bag of more expensive items and try to keep the lower priced items separate. Might not always work depending on size and weight of items!

BobbyBiscuits · 21/08/2024 13:03

Gawd, that would really put me off ever using self scanning! I don't even like doing the self check out. I'd feel kind of embarrassed as well as if they think I'm stealing?!

Citrusandginger · 21/08/2024 13:00

Some of you sound like Karens based on the posts here.

I don't think there is any need for misogynistic insults?

As shoppers we understand the issues of shoplifting. Ultimately, it's a serious issue that we all end up paying for. We also understand that staff have a job to do and most of accept a random scan as part and parcel of self scanning. That doesn't mean we should put up with damage to the food we had packed carefully. Nor does it mean we have to accept extensive delays whilst staff deal with other customers.

Self scan helps supermarkets. I'm not being treated badly for doing their job for them.

Mum2jenny · 21/08/2024 12:52

I just use a manned till unless I’ve only got a few items because of this

bord · 21/08/2024 12:52

Brefugee · 21/08/2024 12:36

I don't mind re scans but I would complain if my éclairs were squashed behave I think that is a separate issue.

Vanillabourbon · 21/08/2024 12:51

If people stopped stealing, we wouldn't have these issues.
Although very annoying, I completely understand why they have to do it. Just the same as Aldi check your bags are empty before you start to pack them. Blame the thieves.
