DH has and hidden something valuable "for safety"

Light hearted...sort of, because this is getting worse.

He has form for this, despite us having two secure safes in the house. He is quite anxious about being burgled.

He has hidden his watch somewhere in the house. We've been looking for two days. I am very tidy and organised. He is tidy but not as organised and has a lot of stuff.

This is driving me mad. My mum has said a prayer to St.Anthony for me😂

He chooses really weird places..I once found the (only) set of keys to our safe inside the cardboard box of a light bulb...which he had forgotten about! And he hid my car keys between the beach towels in the airing cupboard..We have an agreed spot for my keys now.

Can any one think of a weird place we haven't looked?

In future have him email /message himself or you to know where he is hiding things!

SoManyTshirts · 20/08/2024 12:21

I shoved my watch out of sight before leaving the house a couple of weeks ago, found it two days later under an open recipe book in the kitchen. I know now only to temporarily hide things in places that I will revisit very soon.

My more inconvenient memory issue is throwing things away because I’ve forgotten what they’re for … random keys, covers, measurements

Saz93821 · 20/08/2024 12:21

Omg I am your husband. It drives my husband crazy. Ok if I was him here are my top hiding places.

In a cup in the cup cupboard.
In a side pocket of a toilet bag.
Wrapped inside a pair of socks
Inside a medicine box or first aid kit

I know it's madness but I'll never stop. 🤣🤣

A neighbour cleared out her mother’s house and realised there was no jewellery in the safe. The mother had hidden it in the pockets of the coats which had all been thrown out. Tell him to Try his going to a funeral suit .

MovingBird123 · 20/08/2024 12:18

I have done this. Before going on holiday I shoved all my valuable jewellery somewhere, then forgot where upon return. Sinking feeling in my stomach as I recalled considering a tampon box, which I may well have binned... Years later my mum found it all inside a pencil case...

My in-laws hid their passports in the pressure cooker once, only realised when their veg came out a funny colour. They no longer use that hiding place...

😂😂😂 that's brilliant

whiteroseredrose · 20/08/2024 12:17

My sympathies. My mum does this. Emerald ring lost for years and found in the toe of an old boot about to be charity-shopped.

She keeps swearing she won't do it again, they also have safes but it seems she can't help herself.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 20/08/2024 12:17

I'd just leave him to experience the consequences of being so bloody daft. A watch belongs upon somebody's wrist and if it's an expensive one that he's also too frightened to wear in case he gets mugged for it, it should be sold and replaced with a £20 Casio or Sekonda from Argos.

In any case, if he's that bothered about being burgled that you've got a safe that isn't being used, I'd point out that any burglars are going to be more pissed off that they can't find anything and surely he'd just want them to grab stuff and fuck off again? The alternative is that they ransack the place, can't find anything of value despite there being a safe - which tells them that there's going to be stuff of value somewhere in the house - and then be rather angry about it when you/he walks in the door. Does he think somebody doing that type of burglary/robbery is going to take 'But I can't remember where I put it' as a reasonable answer?

Nothing is that valuable that it's worth pissing off a burglar over. Nothing.

shellyleppard · 20/08/2024 12:15

Down the back of the sofa or in the cutlery drawer.....no idea why this popped into my head 🤣🤣

Lemonyyy · 20/08/2024 12:14

If he's anything like my husband, ask him where he last remembers having it then look 3 inches to the left 😆DH is very much "a place for everything, everything in its place" and his brain completely goes to pot as soon as something is not "in its place"

Polyp0 · 20/08/2024 12:14

My God, Mumsnet is fabulous for giving an insight into other peoples minds. I can't even imagine it having one safe, let alone two. And then to go and hide things separately? I just cannot imagine what is going through peoples heads. He must feel very under threat.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 20/08/2024 12:09

ummm thats really weird...

musicforthesoul · 20/08/2024 12:08

As it's his watch that's missing I wouldn't be helping to look any more tbh.

If he wants to do the decoy hiding place thing he should decide on one or two places for it, make sure you know them then stick to them. No point changing it around, it's not like the burglar will know if that's his main concern!

Lovethat · 20/08/2024 12:07

My gran was like this, when she died we ended up taking up floorboards as they found a loose one with a bunch of money stashed underneath (we were clearing out the house and pulled up the grotty carpets to replace). We found jewellery and all sorts in the end

HighOnMaiden · 20/08/2024 12:05

I knew a woman whose husband was like this. He was completely irrational with it. On Christmas eve he'd sleep on the sofa in case someone broke in and stole the gifts. I pointed out that the gifts would remain in the house after that but he couldn't rationalise it.
He'd hide money, jewellery, kids iPads, even her handbag before he went to bed. I couldn't have lived with that level of paranoia personally.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 20/08/2024 12:04

Why are you looking or thinking about this though? It’s for him to look for and find.

spikeandbuffy24 · 20/08/2024 12:02

Have you told him stuff will just get lost or binned?
You can tell him a client I know put his car key in a bag of teabags for safekeeping
His wife had a clear out while he was on holiday
Car keys got binned and they had no spare. It was extortionate to replace and the car had to be recovered

hildabaker · 20/08/2024 11:58

I echo the others who say don't make it your problem - let him look on his own.

Thisoldheartofmine · 20/08/2024 11:58

Also could he text/email/message himself with location when hiding something?

Thisoldheartofmine · 20/08/2024 11:57

Have you got a tower computer?
Friend unscrewed panel and put passports inside before screwing back.

GasPanic · 20/08/2024 11:54

What he says technically makes sense.

But clearly has some practical implications !

I say the list someone else mentioned is the solution.

And making sure he doesn't hide your stuff.

Of course then you have to hide the list. And remember where you hid it.

Angrymum22 · 20/08/2024 11:53

Fridge in a plastic box. Food container in the kitchen cupboards. A pocket of a suit in the wardrobe, I frequently find jewellery I’ve hidden over the years this way.
I once hid a large quantity of M&S vouchers under the cutlery insert in the drawer when we went on holiday. Forgot about them and it took nearly 12 mnths for the lightbulb moment.
Found £60 in my camera case 3 yrs after putting it in there, not to hide but to avoid taking my handbag and camera case on a day out.
Does he have a gym bag he never uses or a washing bag reserved for holidays? Maybe in a shoe or trainer?

Harvesthome · 20/08/2024 11:53

Say your own prayer to St Anthony and let your DH look for his watch. As my Mum used to say, “It’s where you last left it.” I lose things all the time and have 4 cheap watches so I can usually find one. A watch only needs to tell the time. He can buy a cheap one and the other one will turn up eventually.

FrenchandSaunders · 20/08/2024 11:52

My DH has form for this. He's 'lost' an expensive bracelet that he inherited from his nan. It's in the house somewhere but no idea where.

He's also obsessed with hiding car keys. Despite me trying to reassure him that nobody in their right mind would want to steal our shitty little car ffs.

Also hidden important paperwork relating to probate/inheritance "in case someone breaks in and reads it" 🙄

Summertimer · 20/08/2024 11:51

Keep a list of where things are hidden. Have that list virtually or on paper with you. Mother used to do this, it worked
