To suggest a male curfew one night a week

when women can walk free in the streets without fear?

Yes, violence still happens in homes and behind closed doors but what a powerful message it would send.

I'd say every night but let's start with one.

I'd love this and I've heard it discussed in the media for quite some time, so it's not just some mad idea being touted by the op.

It isn't enforceable though unfortunately and, like somebody else said, I'd be afraid that the men with bad intent would feel like a fox in a hen house.

I'd suggest the Freedom programme to be rolled out in schools for teenage girls from the age of 14 and re-enforced ever year. The boys could also have a similar project to teach them healthy relationships and behaviours towards women. I don't know how the porn train can stop for teens and men in general. I guess that horse has already bolted.

Women being murdered cannot be ignored any longer.

Not a realistic idea OP but OMG how wonderful it would be. I’d go for a long walk in the countryside by myself. That would be bliss not to be scared of what could happen

So dreamy. The other week in a strange city I found myself on a beautiful deserted path by a river. I walked down it and spent about 20 seconds thinking about how bucolic it was and how happy I was to have found it.

And then the niggle of fear reared its head. That there was no way off of the path if a man was to approach me. Then I just felt on edge and sad I couldn’t enjoy it.

I knew the chance of something happening was very slim. And indeed nothing did happen. But I was checking behind and in front of me repeatedly and clutching my phone at all times.

We kept curfew for Covid. Cant we do it for women?

What do you suggest to tackle ongoing male violence?

Not everyone did stay at home during covid though there were loads of people breaking the " rules".

TooBored1 · 19/08/2024 18:26

The huge spike in DV would outweigh any gains. Plus, imagine the victim shaming if you were attacked whilst out on a non-male curfew day.

Simonjt · 19/08/2024 18:25

So men who are firefighters, police officers, paramedics, nurses, doctors, surgeons, lorry drivers, taxi drivers, warehouse workers, factory works etc can no longer work nights. Will there be enough women in these industries to drop day shifts and work nights instead?

Ill men can’t access healthcare, ill children can only go to A&E if their mum isn’t at work, children without a mum wouldn’t be able to access healthcare at all.

In all likelihood it would something make Tates fanatics even worse.

What do you suggest to tackle ongoing male violence?

Considering how much domestic violence rose during lockdown, I'd suggest not banning men from the streets for one night a week...

Those who think this suggestion is punishing the innocent for the actions of the guilty - what do you think about the parallel suggestions from the other side that if women don't want to be attacked, we should restrict our movements? What about those long lists of rape prevention tips like "don't wear your hair in a ponytail because it's easy for an assailant to grab" that go around the Internet once in a while? Are those punishing the innocent (women) for the actions of the guilty? Or is it ok that women are effectively under curfew in many areas?

Yes they are punishing the innocent, they are victim blaming and it is ridiculous advice. Like having your hair loose could really prevent a man from attacking you, it's just as stupid as the curfew suggestion.

Growsomeballswoman · 19/08/2024 18:25

No male barstaff, taxi drivers, uber drivers, train drivers. These are predominantly male roles. If women go out alone, where are they going to go? Sounds great fun

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 19/08/2024 18:20

It's clearly hypothetical but yes, I think it would be fantastic.

As for not men not being able to work well there's an added bonus - more jobs for the girls. The services would have to employ more of us to cover " Female Thursday" ( or whichever).

Be really interesting to see what happens with the new found freedom. More clubs, sports etc. Dress how you want in bars and restaurants.

All the " but my son/ husband is lovely" women can look forward to said men doing all the childcare.

But women can work nights already. There isn’t a shortage of night work. I worked nights for 12 years out alone on sites all around. What a ridiculous thing to say. Mist women don’t want to work nights!

x2boys · 19/08/2024 18:24

You might find you are shooting yourself in the foot here, my dh is at work tonight until 11pm he hates late shifts so he would happily stay home ,but that means more women would haven't work them ,more women would also have to do the less desirable shifts in hospitals, police ,bus drivers etc etc ,in fact I rarely see female bus drivers and taxi drivers, so as you are wanting all men to be curfewed ,that would mean less bus services and taxis ti take women where they want to go.

DinnaeFashYersel · 19/08/2024 18:24

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

PearlClutzsche · 19/08/2024 17:48

It’s a really stupid idea.

This, grow up OP.

There is a serious problem which needs properly thought out grown up solutions, not idealistic teenage claptrap.

BargingOnBy · 19/08/2024 18:23

SallyWD · 19/08/2024 18:17

I do this all the time anyway. Not all of us live in fear. I'm sorry if you do.

I do massively restrict my life to minimise the risk of being attacked by a man. If I walked in the countryside on my own and got attacked then I would think it was my own fault for putting myself in a vulnerable position. That doesn’t mean that I think other women are to blame if they are attacked so not logical really.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 19/08/2024 18:23

Deipara · 19/08/2024 18:00

No, not all men are part of the problem. My husband has stepped in when a woman was being attacked by her husband. Most men are not a danger to women and I'm sure most would help a woman in need.

Think of those two men who risked their lives in Southport

Or the security guard in London

There are plenty of men who will rush to help and protect those being harmed and who are disgusted by male behaviour

Redmat · 19/08/2024 18:23

That would take alot of organing , no men bus ,train or taxi drivers. No male paramedics or waiters or well just about anything. Women will have to work to cover them so not many will be out enjoying life.

CautiousLurker · 19/08/2024 18:22

Lol, that’s just a distorted form of sharia law, isn’t it? If it were put in place, then men could ask for a one night curfew for woman (or more in some boroughs, after all, women get a night out once a week, why would they need more), which opens the door for curfews on certain days for muslims, jews, blacks…

So, no. What we need is a society structured around teaching men/boys how to behave around women, around morally requiring men to police their mates/sons/dads/male employees and colleagues, when their behaviour is appalling, or empowering women to feel they can push back, to providing a police service and legal system that ensures male perpetrators are actually found guilty and imprisoned.

noworklifebalance · 19/08/2024 18:22

I agree OP’s suggestion is unworkable but it is an interesting starting point.

For those that are still harping about their precious sons - it’s not about them, it’s about the women and girls to have freedom.

Those that happily walk around fearless - that’s great, doesn’t mean the risk is not there just because you are able to not acknowledge it.

5128gap · 19/08/2024 18:21

But no, OP. Back to the drawing board. It's a terrible idea. In lockdown DVAWG went through the roof. I'd rather run the risk of encountering the dangerous ones in public where there's safety in numbers and we can take some precautions than think of them locked up with some vulnerable woman with no defence.

FreedomDogs · 19/08/2024 18:21

It worked for covid. It wouldn't work to reduce male violence because once again the issue you're ignoring, most male violence happens at home. If anything you're putting women at greater risk by keeping their partners at home, a bit like how domestic violence skyrockets when the football's on.

Feelingleftoutagain · 19/08/2024 18:18

As a mother of two sons who have been bought up to value and cherish women, I find this a ridiculous idea, raising our males to value and cherish is the only way forward

Do you believe other women have intended to raise rapists? If so why would any woman do that? Or is it possible that some men were raised by good mothers and taught to value and cherish women, and have turned out bad anyway?

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 19/08/2024 18:20

If you’re afraid to go out OP you can always stay at home every night!

Growsomeballswoman · 19/08/2024 18:20

All men?. Yes how about all police, firemen, paramedics all stay home one night a week.

sanogo · 19/08/2024 18:19

How will this be policed?
