To suggest a male curfew one night a week

when women can walk free in the streets without fear?

Yes, violence still happens in homes and behind closed doors but what a powerful message it would send.

I'd say every night but let's start with one.

I did not suggest that at all! I merely pointed out that not all men are bad and it was stupid to label all men the same. So don't try and twist people's words

pollyglot · 19/08/2024 18:45

Golda Meir suggested this many years ago. She was ridiculed too. In theory, great idea. In practice, not so much.

BargingOnBy · 19/08/2024 18:44

StoneHenge85 · 19/08/2024 18:20

If you’re afraid to go out OP you can always stay at home every night!

That is how a lot of women have to live at the moment.

Interested in whether you are male or female @StoneHenge85 to post such an offensive thing?

FreedomDogs · 19/08/2024 18:44

rayofsunshine86 · 19/08/2024 18:41

Not necessarily. I think most men would ignore it and say "sod that ridiculous rule. I'm going out to buy a Twix".

Yes and then police and prosecuter time can be thoroughly wasted trying to sort out all the men who just popped out for twix and actual rape convictions will remain low as dirt.

Newbutoldfather · 19/08/2024 18:44

I think it is a fantastic idea and should last until well after bin collection time.

I do think that the corollary should be enforced though, and all the middle class women spouting this misandrist nonsense should be forced to do the predominantly male-staffed unpleasant low waged jobs that keep the country safe and working through the night. These would include waste collection, fire services and essential road and utility maintenance.

The only way violence against women will be solved is if it's a problem for ALL men. So I'm in favour of the ideology behind it.

ColinMyWifeBridgerton · 19/08/2024 18:43

This is genuinely one of the stupidest things I've ever read on here. What are you talking about? Was this inspired by the start of the handmaiden's tale?

It's hard to know where to even start with the idiocy of this suggestion. But here are some practical reasons:

  • most aggression to women happens at home
  • by enforcing this you'd increase the burden on women, as they become the only people who can take kids to swimming lessons, go shopping, earn money, whatever.
  • we don't have enough infrastructure and female workforce to keep everything working
  • many families need the income
  • classist. I'm going to assume "elite" men are exempt. Or would you really have the prime minister miss important government meetings because of his penis?
  • you'd end up with only criminal men on the street at that time
  • impossible to police whether someone is out for a good reason. For example, are men allowed to walk to hospital to receive essential treatment under your regime? How do you prove where they're going? Don't you worry about profiling and it's dangers if the call is left up to police?
  • you'd put big scheduling burdens on people. How do you go out as a family? How do you organise work evenings and school teacher meetings when one less week day that half the population is locked at home?
  • do dependents of men also just end up confined to their homes - children at their dad's, elderly women who rely on their son to drive them, and so on?
  • what age does it kick in?
  • the things you're worried about are already illegal

Some further moral / social reasons why this is a terrible and borderline evil idea.

  • men aren't weapons, they're human beings. We need to socialise them the way you'd socialise a human, not just lock them away to minimise the problem
  • sends the message that actually it's ok to assault women on the men days. After all, "stupid slut should have just gone out on Manless Monday if she didn't want it, am I right lads?".
  • as women, we of all people should know that it's morally wrong to impose restrictions on people based on their sex class
  • it takes away from the wrongs of the patriarchy. The patriarchy is the problem, not men existing in public. Acting like the former is the problem prevents you from addressing the problems of the latter.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 19/08/2024 18:29

Forcing men to stay AT HOME where MOST violence happens would not help ALL women at all!

It would put those women at FAR more risk

But of course you won't listen to that

Yes - DV increased exponentially in the US and UK during lockdowns. Had forgotten that.

rayofsunshine86 · 19/08/2024 18:41

stayathomer · 19/08/2024 17:45

The only ones who won’t keep the curfew will be the ones to be afraid of

Not necessarily. I think most men would ignore it and say "sod that ridiculous rule. I'm going out to buy a Twix".

Iforgotagain · 19/08/2024 18:41

By far the biggest threat to your dd's will be future boyfriends (or any men they live with including your own dp if you have one), not some random in the street. I've been out in the evenings in the city I live in getting myself home for 36 years without ever experiencing male violence. My male sibling has been seriously assaulted twice by strangers walking home.
And you wouldn't even have posted this if you had sons (who are actually at much higher risk of violent assaults than women since they account for the majority of victims). Yes mums of sons have the same worries OP.

Since you're ignoring the fact that statistically violence against women goes up when men stay at home, consider this:

If a man is determined to go out and rape a stranger, don't you think they're more likely to want to take advantage of a night when the streets are quieter, women are lulled into a false sense of security, and they know there's less police and security presence?

PointsSouth · 19/08/2024 18:40

twojumps · 19/08/2024 17:52

So what do we do? Just live with it?

I just don't think that in the absence of a clever idea one should propose a stupid idea.

Overitallnow · 19/08/2024 18:40

Ridiculous post. I live in central London and do not walk around in fear of men. I was however pushed into the road last week by a mentally unstable woman - she did scare me.

RheaRend · 19/08/2024 18:39

It is only what the majority tell women to do to stay safe yet everyone who says it to women get their knickers in a twist when you reverse it. Shows what hypocrites they are.

Errors · 19/08/2024 18:38

Until you need your roads fixing, or your house catches on fire or you need to call the police or you need to access any of the other services that are overwhelmingly staffed by men

noworklifebalance · 19/08/2024 18:37

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 19/08/2024 18:36

This is a good point
It would open up victim blaming massively
"Well you knew it was a day men were allowed out. You should only go out on Thursdays if you want to be safe"

Why can’t blaming be stopped? Surely easier teams quicker than changing a mindset of society over generations

WolabiMe · 19/08/2024 18:37

All women are expected to change their behaviour to avoid being harmed by (some) men. How would it be if instead, all men were expected to change their behaviour to avoid women being harmed by (some) men?

perfectly put 🙌🏼

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 19/08/2024 18:36

I think people are missing the point of the idea. It's not workable, no. Of course not. But what was the suggestion when, for example, the Yorkshire Ripper was active? Women should stay home, or not go out alone. But women being out wasn't the problem, was it? It was one of the men - who were swanning around unimpeded - doing the murdering. If the rule had been "no men on the streets after dark" - well, any man out and about would be under suspicion.

All women are expected to change their behaviour to avoid being harmed by (some) men. How would it be if instead, all men were expected to change their behaviour to avoid women being harmed by (some) men? * *

It's not a workable idea, more a thought experiment. It's like asking "what would happen if men experienced periods / the pain of childbirth / menopause?"

Well said. I don’t know why so much vitriol is being directed at the OP

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 19/08/2024 18:36

Frowningprovidence · 19/08/2024 18:17

It would backfire as women out on other nights would be seen as asking for it. It would end up with 'well you did go for a walk when men were out so what can you expecr'

This is a good point
It would open up victim blaming massively
"Well you knew it was a day men were allowed out. You should only go out on Thursdays if you want to be safe"

FrenchandSaunders · 19/08/2024 17:44

Ridiculous idea and impossible to enforce.

Interesting though....
Considering what's going on in this country, not that outrageous.
