To suggest a male curfew one night a week

when women can walk free in the streets without fear?

Yes, violence still happens in homes and behind closed doors but what a powerful message it would send.

I'd say every night but let's start with one.

The men who are a risk to you and your daughters wouldn’t respect a curfew anyway.

Well I’m the mother of two sons (and no daughters) and I think the concept and discussion is needed

yes I know that NAMALT but ONLY men commit that kind of crime against women (stalking, raping, stabbing, abusing, murdering etc)

it should be all the NAMALTS that are leading the charge against the men that are. But they are not, it’s up to us women to raise the issue.

One message it would send is DV is 'less serious' than stranger attack. Which is not true.

A large proportion of VAWG happens in homes and behind closed doors. In fact, I think, although I might be misremembering figures, women are at more risk of that than from stranger attack.

What do you suggest to tackle ongoing male violence?

For both DV and stranger attacks. Well-funded and effective public services:

Social care
Mental health services
DV services
Probation
CPS
Police
Substance issues services
More (social) housing
Non punitive benefits system
Job, education, and training opportunities.

That's what is needed for a safer and more cohesive society. Will it be done? I don't expect it will but it should be.

Scaremongering? This literally just happened in the city I live in. A woman was raped in the city centre on a walkway connecting a hotel and bar. By a complete stranger.

Of course stranger rapes happen but they are very rare as the Pp was pointing out.

FreedomDogs · 19/08/2024 19:11

Ironically a male curfew would probably see a huge reduction in male violence against males

FlowerWrath · 19/08/2024 19:11

The only person with a curfew should be you

I didn't say it didn't happen
I said MOST happens elsewhere

The stats show that most risk is from those known. Encouraging people to be terrified in the street is scaremongering

I'm also pretty sure that rapists, and certainly child rapists, are considered the lowest of the low in prisons

Brothers/fathers/uncles "paying a visit" to lads who've wronged their female relatives

Men who jump in, often risking their own lives, to protect others from male violence

It is a problem that men address.

So you are ok with men being violent against men?

My DD used to walk at night without fear too. Until she was attacked only a few metres from home.
It's not fear mongering. Women are at risk from violent men indoors and out! Calling our sensible precautions and vigilance fear mongering is not helpful.

It is fear mongering.

Telling girls to carry umbrellas and their keys between their fingers and not wear a ponytail and hide if a man happens to walk near by...

Women are at risk from violent men and women anywhere, at any time. Recent events have once again shown that even in the day there is risk.

HighBuddha · 19/08/2024 19:09

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 19/08/2024 18:56

Luckily
This isn't happening as a matter of course anyway!

Most rape is by people known to the victim. They don't grab random women and drag them off to rape them.

It's just scaremongering

I guess that would be up to all the decent concerned and responsible men to organise for them, wouldn't it? Because women have their hands full enough as it is trying to use their experience to help younger women and girls. It's actually about time men stepped up to offer guidance to boys. Then maybe Andrew Tate wouldn't have found such a void to fill.

So that is a no then?

Of course if its left to the men then you are ok with them sorting out the content?

But then you run the risk of the Andrew Tate types getting in.

Exactly. The likelihood of being attacked might be fairly low but the consequences are usually devastating and life-changing.

Where would you go out TO if all men had to stay at home? :-)

To their new job mending the roads which they had to be drafted into to make up for the shortfall of labour one night a week.

DinnaeFashYersel · 19/08/2024 19:08

I already walk without fear.

And I don't believe we should remove the civil rights of most law abiding snd decent men and boys.

Stupid click bait thread.

BrigadierEtienneGerard · 19/08/2024 19:08

Ah! The sins of the few shall be vested in the many.

The men who are no danger would obey it. The men who are a danger would ignore it entirely.

Pointless.

twilightermummy

I'd suggest the Freedom programme to be rolled out in schools for teenage girls from the age of 14 and re-enforced ever year. The boys could also have a similar project to teach them healthy relationships and behaviours towards women.

Would the boys programme include how they should be treated in a relationship? Because very few teenage relationships are healthy from either side.

I walk around at night without fear. Because I don't let scaremongering get to me.

Punishing all men is not the way to go. Plenty of other options.

Like: harsher sentences, more education, better police presence, better street lighting...

I'd say every night but let's start with one.

You hate all men don’t you ? Do you have any positive relationship with male family members? Or male friend?..Just curious..

LadyGabriella · 19/08/2024 19:04

Good idea but would never be practical. Ie shift workers carers etc. Think women only spaces/accommodation is a good idea.

Paul2023 · 19/08/2024 19:03

Id personally be happy to see curfews for gangs and young people hanging around at night. Say 10pm.

Theres no reason for young people to be out that late.

Goldenbear · 19/08/2024 19:02

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 19/08/2024 17:52

Would there be special passes for those men who work at night? Or would women be expected to pick up the slack? Or would services just be understaffed?

What if they were taken ill or they had to run a friend or family member to the hospital?

Why would it deter those who already think they are above the law and break the law regarding violence?

What about the fact it would essentially TRAP abused women at home with abusive men angry about the discriminatory rule? Where they are more likely to be abused than a woman on the street?

Ignoring the fact that punishing all men in this way would only incite more men to feel aggrieved at women and become extremists.... and is basically segregation

Yes, I was thinking the same and it would trap women with a resentful man.

Anyway, why be scared of men, I think that is the wrong way to think about this. Personally, I don’t restrict myself through fear of men, I do what I want!

Samcro · 19/08/2024 19:02

Who is going to police this ridiculous idea?
seeing as the police won’t be able to.
what age do you think it should start at?

Newbutoldfather · 19/08/2024 18:59

How about if you changed ‘men’ to a particular ethnicity based on percentage convicted of violent crime? How would that thread go?

We have a really fundamental and, I believe, valid concept that everyone is considered innocent until proven guilty, as individuals.

Punishments due to belonging to a certain class or group are quite common in some parts of the world. I believe Hitler tried one based on his mistaken beliefs about people like me (I think curfews were involved in the beginning).

Even as a thought experiment, this is pretty vile.

Paul2023 · 19/08/2024 18:59

And there’s me thinking that every male works 9-5 and none of them ever do night shifts…
