when women can walk free in the streets without fear?

Yes, violence still happens in homes and behind closed doors but what a powerful message it would send.

I'd say every night but let's start with one.

Being able to walk the streets confident in safety.

Well.you would have to walk the streets at least in my area as there are very few female bus drivers/taxi drivers.

Disgusting idea to tarnish all men with the same brush. Give Your head a wobble op.

Yes sorry if you've had bad experiences or know horrible men but there's no need to group all men in the same way.

HollyKnight · 19/08/2024 19:53

Swisscave · 19/08/2024 19:49

It’s all of society that should be teaching men how to behave. Males aren’t always aware of the ways in which the behave that can cause alarm and distress, therefore women need to be involved in that conversation.

Not all men are stupid though right? There are good ones out there. They should be role models and teach the others. They should hold other men accountable for their actions. They should be raising their sons to be good people.

HollyKnight · 19/08/2024 19:47

Shouldn't that be men's issue to solve? They're the ones doing this. They should be teaching each other how to behave properly.

Exactly and why the fuck does anyone need teaching this?
And how long will it bloody take given that it is already freaking obvious that any form of sexual assault is wrong?

MintyNew · 19/08/2024 19:53

OoodlesofNoodles · 19/08/2024 17:42

And punish the majority for the actions of the minority?

Exactly!

How ridiculous. Who on earth would think men willing to break the law with violence would be willing to abide by the law of a curfew? It would also be against the civil liberties of honest and decent men.

Clearly some will give it a go. But they wouldn't have the patriarchy on their side. They are in the wrong just by being out. Same as someone with a gun or knife is now. Only difference is it's much easier to spot a man than a concealed weapon.

listsandbudgets · 19/08/2024 19:52

I'm much happier if I know my DD is out with a mixed group of friends.

I do not want my son tarnished eoth the "nasty" brush.

If you're that keen segregating the sexes OP then join a convent

Exactly this.

We know not all men are sexual predators and nobody is saying they are. But 98% of those crimes are committed by men. It is very much a male problem.

What this thread has highlighted is that there are actually a fair few men on Mumsnet.

And as somewhat of an aside, the only people I hear using the word misandry are a certain subset of society who shall not be named, but if you know, you know.

I’m not a man. I used it. Because that’s what it is. If someone had posted something even half as misogynistic as this thread is misandrist it would have been taken down by now.

No male paramedics out? No male workers anywhere?

What's amazing about it?

Being able to walk the streets confident in safety.

Even if we had gender equality across all workforces - which obviously we don't- it would still mean the workforce dropping by half for a night every week. It would either be carnage - emergency services stretched too thin, taxis and public transport services halved, impossible to actually have a good night out because everywhere is short-staffed. Or no women would actually get to enjoy their one night a week because they'd all have to take on second jobs.

But there's only half the population out and about.

The culture if all those "male" jobs would have to change because women would be required in larger numbers. Loads of women work nights but these are minimum wage jobs. They would command a premium on Female Thursday.

The domestic violence in the home is a massive problem currently. It's debatable to understand how it would get worse on the night women only have the right to be outside.

Younger men would soon learn their needs don't top women's.

There’s no guarantees for anything but it’s certainly one way to make women safer on the streets.

Just like a driving licence and learning to use the roads safely. Males need to learn how to behave in public that doesn’t cause stress and alarm.

Yes but what would this test look like? What would they have to do? Prove they can walk past a woman without wolfwhistling?

Lauraa7 · 19/08/2024 19:47

There was a book written a few years ago, I forget the name. My friends and I had a great discussion about what we could then do. We could go sit on the beach, walk home with no gear, the freedom it would offer. I think it would be amazing.

Rosscameasdoody · 19/08/2024 19:47

CurlewKate · 19/08/2024 19:35

This thread is just another example of people refusing to take VAWAG seriously. All the NAMALT/women are just as violent as men/ what about violence against men-don't you care about men/I have sons-they are lovely......and so on and so on. VAWAG is a huge issue. Putting our fingers in our ears and pretending it doesn't happen is must not cutting it.

And neither is blaming and punishing every man.

HollyKnight · 19/08/2024 19:47

Swisscave · 19/08/2024 19:41

That is very true, so we must do what we can to teach men how to behave and target those that won’t

Please tell us the details of this test, I'm fascinated that you think there's a test that can accurately determine who will and who won't go on to commit a sexual assault.

HollyKnight · 19/08/2024 19:45

Use some common sense. Unless men are going to be physically locked in their houses, the bad ones will still go out and have a much easier time picking off lone women out wandering at night under the illusion that they are safe.

AGoingConcern · 19/08/2024 19:45

Laws that restrict what individuals can do and where they can go based on sex or gender are not acceptable except in exceptionally limited scenarios. Things like gender-based curfews will ultimately be used to restrict women - often in the name of protecting them.

Segregating society is not the solution to misogyny and violence against women.

Swisscave · 19/08/2024 19:45

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 19/08/2024 19:41

Of course
Men over 55 are completely harmless 🙄

Ignoring your transphobia

Of course men over 65 commit crimes, but are less likely to than those who are younger.

Of course women commit crimes but usually of a less serious nature and certainly in lower numbers than males. That isn’t transphobia to point out sex based differences.

FreedomDogs · 19/08/2024 19:44

Swisscave · 19/08/2024 19:40

The 26 years olds would have spend ages 16-25 under a curfew and would have had to pass a test to get a licence. I would suspect they would learn how to behave in public if they wanted to keep it.

Please tell us the details of this test, I'm fascinated that you think there's a test that can accurately determine who will and who won't go on to commit a sexual assault.

Againname · 19/08/2024 19:44

Yes, but DV in the home has very specific dynamics and the age group most likely to commit these crimes is not the younger cohort.

There's no specific dynamics - except insufficient and poorly funded public services. It's also not limited to men aged over 25. Lots of younger men do DV. Not only against girlfriends and wives (and children) but also in some cases against their mothers or younger siblings.

I think in fact that one of the reasons why DV is such a big (and increasing) problem is partly because of subconscious or unconscious victim blaming attitudes. People, very often subconsciously, think it's "not as serious" as stranger attacks, because "I'm not that type of woman", when really it can happen to anyone.

The way to tackle both DV and VAWG commited by strangers (and violent crime in general) is through improving and increasing public services.

Crime increases in failing societies with high poverty levels, lack of decent housing, underfunded and ineffective public services, punitive benefits systems, and lack of good job, training, and education opportunities. Failing to fund and sustain support and services leads to a breakdown in community and society.

So you are ok with men being violent against men?

My son was mugged in a really violent and traumatic way when at uni. Destroyed his mental health for a long time.

timetodecide2345 · 19/08/2024 19:43

Didn't the Nazis do that with Jews at the start of the war?
