To suggest a male curfew one night a week

when women can walk free in the streets without fear?

Yes, violence still happens in homes and behind closed doors but what a powerful message it would send.

I'd say every night but let's start with one.

The op and anyone who agrees with her. How would people react if someone put the same post up about race instead of sex. Would that be acceptable

but we’re not talking about race. We’re talking about VAWG and tactics to help reduce it. I still would like to see just one quote that suggests anyone on this thread ‘hates all men’ or even ‘blames all men.’

whatisgoingonadviceplease · 19/08/2024 20:34

A curfew for men doesn’t erase the patriarchy or the thirst for male violence. In fact it would only likely increase it.

Totally agree. It would make them more angry.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 19/08/2024 20:34

Christ on a bike OP, you do realise there're women who walk about at night and aren't in fear of their lives every time they walk down the street?

So did the woman who attacked and hospitalised me... and the men who pulled her off me

@listsandbudgets sorry that happened to you but not sure what it has to do with a conversation around VAWG 🫤

WolabiMe · 19/08/2024 20:30

All the man haters on here do you have sons/grandsons/nephews. Not all men are violent criminals and not all women are innocent gentle beings

@Differentstarts please quote me one quote from this thread which looks to be from someone who hates all men?

Never said they were - I suggested it as a solution to OPs desire to segregate the sexes she can join a convent

My son is 12. I do not want him to grow up in a society in which people appear to assume him to be violent and abusive AND to propose punishments (and yes that's what curfew is) just on the supposition he might be.

My DD is 18. She prefers to go out in mixed groups - she feels safe and comfortable with her friends and would be horrified that some of the people on this thread think that many of her friends should be punished for their Y chromosome.

If this is clickbait - I've been suitably baited - you want to curtail the freedom of my DP, brother, brother in law, son, nephews, my 16 year old Ukrainian guest, my neighbours 4 lovely sons, my DCs friends and class mates and teachers, my local shop keepers ... and so on... all because SOME people misbehave..

Vile misandry very sad to see it on mumsnet

I care more about women and girls actual physical safety than the hurt feelings of all of the multitude of, apparently, amazing men you know. Also, how do you know what your DD thinks. Have you actually asked her….maybe, with your attitude she thinks there’s only one correct answer.

listsandbudgets · 19/08/2024 20:33

@WolabiMe So you reckon the other 85% of them should suffer???

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 19/08/2024 20:30

Oh god yes, BargingOnBy, do seek therapy won’t you? It’s definitely your fault for not being more mentally robust than the, quite logical, fear of violence from unknown men, that’s the problem. FFS.

I have always walked my dogs, for miles, along the quiet and remote north Kent Coast and the adjoining farmland. More than once I’ve seen a lone man in the distance and my hackles have gone up, and I’ve tried to get back to my car as soon as humanly possible. Once a man literally ‘followed’ me whilst I was on a farm track and he was on the parallel sea wall - which are about 100 hundred metres apart maybe. We were the only two humans visible for miles. I just got a weird feeling about him. Instead of watching the cost line for birds as is usual for lone people there he was facing me and if I went left for a while, so did he. I stopped and went right, he stopped and went right. I was shit scared, no phone signal, alone. I basically left the farm track and entered the field and tried to run though it as fast as possible back to the car park, I couldn’t see what he was doing at the time but hoped he was following the sea wall which would give me a bit more time than him.

I haven’t walked that route alone since.

An acquaintance of mine, Claire Knights, was murdered in the same area a short while ago by a lone, unknown, man whilst she was walking her dog. I wonder if you’ve even heard of her? No, I won’t be seeking therapy for any fear I have, you absolute flan.

Thanks @TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers, I’m sorry you had to go through that. You obviously understand my fears.

whatisgoingonadviceplease · 19/08/2024 20:33

And not only trapped at home with their abuser, but trapped with I imagine a far angrier abuser than normal. He will be well and truly pissed off that he's been prevented from leaving the house and guess who will be getting the brunt of that anger..... his poor female partner at home.

Didimum · 19/08/2024 20:33

Chellybelle · 19/08/2024 20:31

Aren't women more likely to be harmed or murdered by their intimate partner statistically? So what happens when those women are in effect trapped with their abuser? It's such a stupid idea. I don't know what the answer is to end male violence. There probably is no solution but this certainly ain't it.

Exactly. It would increase male violence.

Didimum · 19/08/2024 20:32

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 19/08/2024 19:52

Clearly some will give it a go. But they wouldn't have the patriarchy on their side. They are in the wrong just by being out. Same as someone with a gun or knife is now. Only difference is it's much easier to spot a man than a concealed weapon.

A curfew for men doesn’t erase the patriarchy or the thirst for male violence. In fact it would only likely increase it.

Im sorry to say this but have you considered going to therapy? Because that’s just not healthy.

As others have said you’re more likely to be attacked in your own home and by someone you know.

Oh god yes, BargingOnBy, do seek therapy won’t you? It’s definitely your fault for not being more mentally robust than the, quite logical, fear of violence from unknown men, that’s the problem. FFS.

As the mother of a son I find this highly offensive

all rapists, attackers/ murderers/ creeps have mothers too you know

So did the woman who attacked and hospitalised me... and the men who pulled her off me

parkrun500club · 19/08/2024 20:30

I’m not a man. I used it. Because that’s what it is. If someone had posted something even half as misogynistic as this thread is misandrist it would have been taken down by now

Not it wouldn't because the reverse already happens in other countries - see Afghanistan and other countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran to a lesser extent. But women are kept indoors to stop them being attacked by men who can't control themselves.

The suggestion is to keep men indoors to stop them attacking women (and other men, come to that, because they can't control themselves.

No reason to take a thread down because it's an unworkable idea. The reverse seems to be eminently workable, though. Funny, that.

Alucard55 · 19/08/2024 20:30

I disagree with the OP too.

HighBuddha · 19/08/2024 20:29

saraclara · 19/08/2024 20:27

So if we disagree with the OP, we're men?

Good grief.

I also disagreed with the OP, or did you miss that bit?

WolabiMe · 19/08/2024 20:28

No-one throwing about the misandrist title has yet been able to explain why they think this discussion is that?

This is about returning freedom to women for one night not punishing men and certainly no-one anywhere has said ‘all men are evil’ or anything remotely like that

Alucard55 · 19/08/2024 20:27

thursdaymurderclub · 19/08/2024 20:24

you do know that woman also attack other woman don't you? and you do know that not all men are violent beasts?

what a ridiculous notion

YES! We know that. We also know that 98% of sexual and violent crime is committed by men and we cannot tell, just by looking, who the good men are and who the sexual violent predators are.

HighBuddha · 19/08/2024 20:27

FiddlyDiddlyDee · 19/08/2024 20:21

here's another thought experiment for you

would there be more resources to solve societal problems if

people kept posting pointless thought experiments on forums
people did useful things

This is an incredible stretch 🥴

So no answer then. Well off with you then, to go do all of those useful things we should be doing instead of waffling about on MN!

saraclara · 19/08/2024 20:27

HighBuddha · 19/08/2024 19:48

What this thread has highlighted is that there are actually a fair few men on Mumsnet.

And as somewhat of an aside, the only people I hear using the word misandry are a certain subset of society who shall not be named, but if you know, you know.

So if we disagree with the OP, we're men?

Good grief.
