To suggest a male curfew one night a week

when women can walk free in the streets without fear?

Yes, violence still happens in homes and behind closed doors but what a powerful message it would send.

I'd say every night but let's start with one.

I'm a bloke, I've a wife, 2 sons and a teenage daughter. This is the best suggestion ever, you can have the shopping centres to yourself, can go out partying till late, have a couple too many drinks and I'd be restful and relaxed my girls would get home safely. I'll be happy at home to know the females out there can enjoy themselves once a week without fear of spiked drinks and dodgy blokes. My vote is yanbu all day long.

My vote is that men who refer to women as "females" sound like Ferengi and we don't really need for them to rock up and tell us what we should want and what is good for us.

Newbutoldfather · 19/08/2024 20:48

Animal Farm is always worth rereading, judging by this and similar threads.

What the fuck are you on about? Review my parenting? I haven’t mentioned any of my children. The usual misogynist shit, I see.

You implied that my child felt she couldn't disagree with me. I said that she is quite capable of it and suggested that if you felt your children were incapable of such confidence you should review your parenting.

I am not quite sure why you think its "misogynist shit"

Mumsnet seems to have lost it tonight. I'm checking out to spend the evening with my NON VIOLENT dp.. and guess what we're going out...bet that pisses the OP off

Findwen · 19/08/2024 20:48

Banning all alcohol 7 days a week and enforcing all drug laws would be far more effective imho.

WolabiMe · 19/08/2024 20:47

And what is the percentage of women who are committing violent crimes

@Differentstarts well if 97% is committed by men then you minus that from 100% and get 3% 🤫

Sallyh87 · 19/08/2024 20:47

Not that I frequently go out anymore, when I was young and did, it was generally in a group of boys and girls. If I go out late now it would be the same.

Cant see how this would help us live as a cohesive society. By all means call out the men who are committing violence but that’s the minority not the majority.

Differentstarts · 19/08/2024 20:47

WolabiMe · 19/08/2024 20:43

So it's ok to be sexist but not racist. Saying all males should have a curfew is sexist and I can't believe mumsnet is allowing this thread

@Differentstarts eh? How is discussing ways of tackling VAWG sexist?

After Sarah Everard went missing the advice was for women to ‘stay at home.’ And no-one was up in arms about it. At the time a politician suggested maybe men did so…

Because it's not discussing it. People are saying all males should have a curfew that's sexist. You can't group people together like that

And punish the majority for the actions of the minority?

No,rather to crystalise in their minds how dangerous their sex has become for the other half of the population.
And more importantly give women a desperately needed break, just for once after 1000s of years.

"Millions of men in England and Wales pose a danger to women and children, the commissioner of the Metropolitan police has said.
Sir Mark Rowley said the figures were “eye-watering” and an “inconvenient truth” as he called for a much bigger effort, a national strategy and more money to tackle the problem.

LlynTegid · 19/08/2024 20:45

Now who was it who paid no attention to Covid restrictions and organised parties- men.

Do you really think given the exceptionalist attitudes of many men (and women) to any set of rules, a curfew would actually be followed? Never mind the impact as has been noted of angry men at home.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 19/08/2024 20:44

And you seem to think joining a convent segregates women from men, or somehow keeps them safe. Not a Catholic then, I imagine, or someone who gives a fuck about VAWG, given the clear flippancy of your convent comment.

thursdaymurderclub · 19/08/2024 20:24

you do know that woman also attack other woman don't you? and you do know that not all men are violent beasts?

what a ridiculous notion

Don’t be silly. This is MN. 15% of men responsible for violence against women is absolutely justification for locking them up alongside the other 85% who haven’t actually done anything wrong - y’ know, just in case !! Then we have a suggestion that no man should be let out until the age of 25 when he’s ‘earned’ a licence, and that that licence should be revoked if he collects enough penalty points for bad behaviour. It’s batshit and the way some posters are framing it as a realistic solution to violence against women is quite scary.

Imagine a man posting that all women should be issued with similar curfew and ‘licensing’ because of the bad behaviour of a minority. The cries of misogyny would be loud and long. But to suggest it’s fine to do this to men isn’t misandry apparently. I’ve seen some double standards on MN but this one takes the cake.

Women and girls aren’t being murdered and raped by a particular race? So your argument doesn’t hold water I’m afraid. In the UK ~97% of violence against women and girls is perpetrated by men. Therefore this discussion centring on male behaviour is correct. The initial idea not so much, as much as a reprieve from worrying would be nice.

And what is the percentage of women who are committing violent crimes. The whole point of the thread is people saying all males should have a curfew so why shouldn't the race with the highest crime rate all have a curfew. It shouldn't because it's racist just like males shouldn't because it's sexist

WolabiMe · 19/08/2024 20:43

AGoingConcern · 19/08/2024 20:43

A curfew for men doesn’t erase the patriarchy or the thirst for male violence. In fact it would only likely increase it.

This. It will be seen as an attack on all men and prompt even more backlash and misogyny.

It also reinforces the idea that men are all expected to be violent and predatory towards women, which is a key tenet of rape culture. "Men are dangerous just because they're men, the only way to keep women safe is to gender segregate."

@TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers Yes I have had this discussion with her on a number of occassions... and she's been quite clear she prefers mixed groups.

My DD is VERY clear when she disagrees with me. We have to bring up our children to be confident about how they express themselves and if you feel that your children are not able to do that then you should review your parenting

The op and anyone who agrees with her. How would people react if someone put the same post up about race instead of sex. Would that be acceptable

but we’re not talking about race. We’re talking about VAWG and tactics to help reduce it. I still would like to see just one quote that suggests anyone on this thread ‘hates all men’ or even ‘blames all men.’

There's a post that blames all men. According to that poster all men are part of the problem.

noworklifebalance · 19/08/2024 20:11

It’s akin to white people calling out racist comments by other white people - the impact is greater for the transgressor than if a black person were to do it.

It’s also not laughing along with locker room jokes, walking along the same side of the road as a lone woman. All the microaggressions as well as the overt ones

Exactly. Who is a racist going to listen to? Black people saying don't attack black people or their white peers?

Men who hate or look down on women don't care about women. They dont listen to women. But they do care about what men say. They will care if they are shamed by their peers. They will care if they are ostracised by their peers. They still won't care about women, but they'll at least control their behaviour towards women.

@Newbutoldfather but there wasn’t an issue with Jewish people being dishonest. That was made up because the Nazis hated them. It’s not even slightly similar.

15% of men commit VAWG

OrwellianTimes · 19/08/2024 20:38

Mymanyellow · 19/08/2024 17:51

The men who are a risk to you and your daughters wouldn’t respect a curfew anyway.

Quite.

And the decent men who might intervene in an attack, or escort a drunken friend home, will be locked up at home.

SouthLondonMum22 · 19/08/2024 20:38

I'd agree to a male curfew if there was a dangerous man on the loose such as a serial killer targeting women. In the past, women have been told to stay indoors after a certain time but it should be men.
