To suggest a male curfew one night a week

when women can walk free in the streets without fear?

Yes, violence still happens in homes and behind closed doors but what a powerful message it would send.

I'd say every night but let's start with one.

Oh god yes, BargingOnBy, do seek therapy won’t you? It’s definitely your fault for not being more mentally robust than the, quite logical, fear of violence from unknown men, that’s the problem. FFS.

I have always walked my dogs, for miles, along the quiet and remote north Kent Coast and the adjoining farmland. More than once I’ve seen a lone man in the distance and my hackles have gone up, and I’ve tried to get back to my car as soon as humanly possible. Once a man literally ‘followed’ me whilst I was on a farm track and he was on the parallel sea wall - which are about 100 hundred metres apart maybe. We were the only two humans visible for miles. I just got a weird feeling about him. Instead of watching the cost line for birds as is usual for lone people there he was facing me and if I went left for a while, so did he. I stopped and went right, he stopped and went right. I was shit scared, no phone signal, alone. I basically left the farm track and entered the field and tried to run though it as fast as possible back to the car park, I couldn’t see what he was doing at the time but hoped he was following the sea wall which would give me a bit more time than him.

I haven’t walked that route alone since.

An acquaintance of mine, Claire Knights, was murdered in the same area a short while ago by a lone, unknown, man whilst she was walking her dog. I wonder if you’ve even heard of her? No, I won’t be seeking therapy for any fear I have, you absolute flan.

Oh dear. I suppose I failed to mention that I do in fact also have a horror story related to a man. A stranger actually. Who sexually assaulted me, shoved a pencil up my urethra that made a hole in my bladder, and made a hole in my diaphragm so I was closer to death than life. The man was wearing RayBans. And through therapy I’ve learnt to not live my life in fear of pencils, men, and random straight and slim object and oddly enough RayBans. If you limit your life based on what ifs and could have beens - and like the PP I quoted mention are severely limiting your life. Then yes it’s time for therapy.

I didn’t mean this in a bad way, simply that living your life in fear of a small percentage of the human kind is not a healthy way to live. Not for anybody.

But yes, you think you're being funny. You're not, staying home every night is in fact the alternative for many women who just don't feel safe walking on their own, or travelling by train, or even in mini-cabs. That is reality for some of us. It has been for me since I was in my teens (I'm old enought to be invisible now, but it was an unpleasant fact of life for me for about 25 years). It's really not funny to be frightened of walking home on your own from a station or a city centre late at night when there are no taxis or lifts available. A woman's quality of life is affected and restricted because of men being on the streets.

Well said. And surprise surprise @StoneHenge85 is a man.

So you're implying theres nothing that can be done?
Of course there is. But men need to change their own culture.

How about sport? Rugby versus Football. Both very macho, with passionate supporters, both have alcohol featuring heavily.
Entirely different cultures. Zero trouble at one, fans constantly causing problems at the other.

Ok so instead of certain types of men roughing each other up at football matches, they go off and find other outlets for their violent tendencies? Like, I don't know, women?

Any other good suggestions?

@Differentstarts

Where have I gone? I've got stuff to do, I don't sit here pouring over every comment.

To others, I'm not writing for the Daily Mail for goodness sake. They're a bunch of low life right wings idiots, if that helps. Behave yourself.

It was a suggestion that has provoked discussion. Sort of the point. Back to the drawing board.

Well I have stuff to do to but Iv been asked by 3 different posters now to Google statistics because their to lazy to do it themselves so maybe if your going to start a thread you should actually be available to answer people's questions and give facts

?? Sorry I don't understand. Is female not in the dictionary any longer?

I assume that would be where the Ferengi learned the word, yes.

Listen, this is a hypothetical discussion, it's never going to happen ever. So there's no point answering another hypothetical challenge. Chill.

It was a totally daft ill thought out idea you mean.

Differentstarts · 19/08/2024 21:26

Alucard55 · 19/08/2024 21:22

Done it. It's 98%.

98% what sexual crime, violent crime, men on men, men on women, women on women, women on men. These are what you was asking me so which is 98% and if your talking sexual crime what % in homes as if the majority happened behind closed doors suggesting a curfew would increase rape. People are so terrified of being outside but the reality is the most dangerous place to be is home

nocoolnamesleft · 19/08/2024 21:26

HelloMiss · 19/08/2024 21:05

@nocoolnamesleft

Ridiculous!

You are deluded..

In my first comment I said it was a thought experiment. What would be deluded about that? Currently all women face restrictions for the actions of some men. What is wrong with a thought experiment suggesting restrictions on men instead?

@Everyoneesleistheproblem what do you think the nice men should do about it?
I find that absolutely ridiculous that decent good men need to fight the battle for those rotten ones. What exactly do you think they should do? Provide some realistic example?

So you're implying theres nothing that can be done?

WolabiMe · 19/08/2024 21:13

@Differentstarts we’re not taking about violent crime, which is a myriad of things. We’re talking specifically VAWG.

actually we're talking about male curfews to protect women, so yes what that poster said about violence against men is relevant, as is the fact that violence is less likely to be called out when it's against men

several posters have in fact tried to explain to you that it would punitive to women to curfew men , but also what that poster is alluding to is the fact that a curfew would reduce violence against men

so basically you're suggesting we punish DV victims while reducing violence against men, which doesn't really have any relation to reducing VAWG

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 19/08/2024 21:24

FreedomDogs · 19/08/2024 20:49

My vote is that men who refer to women as "females" sound like Ferengi and we don't really need for them to rock up and tell us what we should want and what is good for us.

?? Sorry I don't understand. Is female not in the dictionary any longer?

spirit20 · 19/08/2024 21:24

If this were to come into law, it would make absolutely no difference. If a man is going to obey the laws about not harassing or assualting women, I doubt he would obey a law about sticking to a curfew.

Whatafustercluck · 19/08/2024 21:23

BeSpoonyAquaHare · 19/08/2024 21:13

This wouldn’t end, or even reduce, male violence. Violent men aren’t prevented from abusing their victims by lack of opportunities to find women on the street. And think of all those poor women trapped at home with an abusive partner who is prevented from going out by a curfew and only has her to vent his rage on.

And then think of the way this would be twisted. A curfew wouldn’t do anything to resolve things like victim blaming, so if a woman was assaulted on a non-curfew night how many people would say ‘what was she doing out anyway? She should have waited for curfew to go for a walk at 10pm’. How many women would start to limit their own activities on non-curfew nights for fear of being blamed for something happening while they were out with men around?

The real solution is much harder, broader and deeper. It’s a start that Labour have announced that misogyny is going to be treated as a form of extremism going forward; we need to tackle the insidious influence of people like Andrew Tate. We need comprehensive education in schools on the VAWAG epidemic and how boys and men can prevent it. We need police reform so that survivors are believed and conviction rates improved.

This. Male violence (against women, against children, and against other men) is an epidemic. But a curfew is a ridiculous idea for so many reasons already mentioned on this thread. A voluntary curfew made by men in support of women would be far more impactful. We need to get the majority of good men to work with us, not impose something that sows further division.

FrippEnos · 19/08/2024 21:23

Redhairandhottubs · 19/08/2024 21:14

I had this conversation with someone DH's other day. My preference would be for female only towns housing estates where only women and children could live. Totally impractical as how would you ever enforce it, but it would be nice. Totally sick of males dominating space and the amount of noise they make.

Its actually more feasible than the OP's idea, gated communities are a thing.

But at what age would you kick out the boys?

Uglyandgrumpy · 19/08/2024 21:23

Differentstarts · 19/08/2024 20:49

So what happens when your daughter gets hurt and hospitals are closed because their isn't enough staff because the men are at home what happens if a woman attacks her but their isn't enough police officers because the men are at home.

Aye, let's cancel the idea. Like it was going to happen anyway.

Alucard55 · 19/08/2024 21:22

Differentstarts · 19/08/2024 21:18

I'm not your personal Google you have a phone in your hand to

Done it. It's 98%.

Uglyandgrumpy · 19/08/2024 21:21

x2boys · 19/08/2024 20:50

What about if your daughters needed urgent medical attention ,but couldn't get it as there were only female staff on duty so not enough staff , or your house caught fire and there were not enough female fire officers to put it out
Or if your daughters couldn't get a taxi or bus home because most drivers are male and at home?

Listen, this is a hypothetical discussion, it's never going to happen ever. So there's no point answering another hypothetical challenge. Chill.

Alucard55 · 19/08/2024 21:21

From Center For Action on Rape and Abuse

98% of adults prosecuted for sexual offences are men (Office for National Statistics)

Differentstarts · 19/08/2024 21:18

Alucard55 · 19/08/2024 21:12

What percentage of that 80 % of male crime is committed against women and what percentage is committed against men?

Do you have the numbers on sexual violence?

I'm not your personal Google you have a phone in your hand to

hereismydog · 19/08/2024 21:17

Most VAWG is committed by someone known to them (usually a current or former partner), if this curfew you propose came into force then we’d be trapping the most vulnerable women at home with the most dangerous men.

Also, if someone is fucked enough in the head to rape and murder, they’re not going to respect a curfew, are they?

If you’d said we should have far harsher punishments for violent and abusive men, and more safe spaces for women, I’d agree with you, but a curfew is a ridiculous solution to the real problem.
