Family wedding next year.. seen this dress online that I love....

Would I be unreasonable to think this is ok for a wedding guest? Or is it too bridesmaidy?

If someone wore this to a wedding I would instantly think they were trying to upstage the bride

wedding guest attire should be elegant and modest

this dress is neither

Omeleto2024 · 19/08/2024 13:48

I mean, you could probably get away with it, it's not that bad so far as flashing the flesh goes.

But it does look a bit like a cheap knock off of an attention seeking 1980s prom dress.

RosesAndHellebores · 19/08/2024 13:48

I don't think it's appropriate for a religious ceremony, ie, church.

exprecis · 19/08/2024 13:42

BluebellsareBlue · 19/08/2024 13:37

Slashed open to the navel? That would mean their vag was on show. I highly doubt anyone thought that was appropriate

Err, navel is your belly button? Not your vagina!

BluebellsareBlue · 19/08/2024 13:41

And the debretts (or whatever it is) comment!! Holy lord above!! This isn't a royal wedding (or I'm sure the OP would have said), and it isn't 1940 so give it a rest.

BluebellsareBlue · 19/08/2024 13:39

@Dotto I would hate to mix in "your circles". Laughing at another's clothing?!? My god, are you and your friends 12?!? How cruel and immature. Do you also throw stones at pigeons?!?

BluebellsareBlue · 19/08/2024 13:37

exprecis · 19/08/2024 12:11

@KreedKafer

It clearly does vary a lot between circles.

I feel the opposite - I have never seen anyone wear a dress like this to a wedding and if they did they would stick out like a sore thumb.

Someone posted a while back with a dress that was slashed open to their navel and loads of people thought it was fine too

dbeuowlxb173939 · 19/08/2024 13:30

I think it's fine but depending on how tall you are- if you're quite short and it ends up being more of a maxi length then get it shortened so it's not too bridesmaidy

YellowphantGrey · 19/08/2024 11:50

Your circle sounds grim. Imagine thinking it's OK to laugh at a women's choice of dress. How does that make them better?

I don't think I'd like your circles...

It's a lovely dress.

Ginmonkeyagain · 19/08/2024 12:58

It's a pretty dress in a gorgeous colour (I always wear bold colours to occasions incliding weddings). However the back lets down and makes it look a bit cheap, which is a shame.

Given you can't wear a bra with it, I don't think the front construction will give much boob support and at events that involve a lot of dancing and drinking, boob support is always a consideration.

Prawncow · 19/08/2024 12:43

I love the front of the dress, it’s the back I’m not sure about from a practical perspective.

It’s not a style I’d wear but that’s irrelevant because I’m not the OP or one of her circle of friends. I think most of us only know what’s ‘wedding appropriate’ for our social circle. There’s also a gap between what the 16-25 age group consider ok as a wedding guest dress and what the over 25s think is ok, driven by places like Pretty Little Thing.

I will join you in the old bag corner. Of course you should dress up and look nice as a wedding guest. I just think a dress held together by string isn't really appropriate attire

But I can't see it looking bridesmaidy at all, I have never seen a bridesmaid dress looking remotely like this

Budge up in the old bag corner.

Happiestwhen · 19/08/2024 12:16

Ps the dress is found under 'wedding guest dresses' so that style is obviously trending 👗

sweetpickle2 · 19/08/2024 12:16

I find the 'appropriate for a wedding' comments on MN really funny. In the real world, it's 2024 not 1944- just don't wear a wedding dress and you'll be fine.

It's a beautiful dress OP (and recommended as a wedding guest dress in the listing), am thinking of ordering it myself so thank you!

YellowphantGrey · 19/08/2024 12:16

Dotto · 19/08/2024 11:52

But nobody in my circles would even conceive that this is appropriate or pleasant, really, we just don't wear those sort of clothes. We are not old or uptight, or even unusual going by the other comments here.

Your circle actively laughs at people and their choice of clothes.

Do you honestly think it makes any of you better people?!

KreedKafer · 19/08/2024 12:05

The front is fine but I agree with PPs that the naked back detail seems a bit much for a wedding guest. It's not bridesmaidy, but it does feel a little OTT to me.

That said, you will know the bride and groom and the general vibe of their wedding much better than anyone here! I'm constantly seeing people on Mumsnet insisting that wedding outfits are 'inappropriate' when they would actually be totally acceptable at any wedding I've attended. So if it's going to be the kind of wedding where everyone goes all-out and you won't look out of place, then it's fine.

exprecis · 19/08/2024 11:56

catgirl1976 · 19/08/2024 11:31

I just think there's an etiquette to wedding attire and this falls outside of it.

Which obviously makes me a miserable, sack-wearing, pearl-clutching old bag so don't listen to me and wear it if you like it :)

Different circles then... Only OP knows her own circles. In mine a guest wearing that would be laughed at.

Thank goodness my friends arent like that! I'd be so depressed if my friends were all so bitchy and prim

What an awful circle to mix in. Had anyone laughed at my guests’ outfits - or anything else - at my wedding, they’d have been turfed off the island, and not in the boats we arrived in.

Borninabarn32 · 19/08/2024 11:50

It's lovely, you're allowed to look nice, or even hot at someone's wedding. So long as it's not the bridesmaid colour you won't look bridesmaidy

YellowphantGrey · 19/08/2024 11:49

Dotto · 19/08/2024 09:54

Unless the wedding is in a swimming pool or on a beach, I think this would look odd, even for bridesmaids. But then I'd have pervy uncle Derek to contend with so...

The sooner men learn how to feel humiliation and embarrassment, the better.

OP if you like the dress and it fits and it's comfortable go for it. It's a pretty dress.

GoTigers · 19/08/2024 11:48

Gosh, not massively well mannered to laugh at people.
