Family wedding next year.. seen this dress online that I love....

Would I be unreasonable to think this is ok for a wedding guest? Or is it too bridesmaidy?

Well men don't need to worry about women gaining too much equality. This thread highlights just how much mysogny is ingrained and how happy women are to quickly degrade a woman and put them in their place.

Who knew a backless dress would cause such vitriol and admissions of bullying

Dotto · 19/08/2024 21:02

BluebellsareBlue · 19/08/2024 20:42

@Dotto no it wasn't an obtuse reply. You and your friends are mean and cruel if you laugh at the clothing of others. Don't try and deflect because you've been called out by various posters regarding your terrible behaviour and that of those in your circle/coven

Nobody has "called me out". I have never behaved in such a way and nor have my friends, unfortunately my point has missed you entirely.

BrioNotBiro · 19/08/2024 21:01

If it's a church wedding I think it's showing too much off and you need to cover up with a jacket during the ceremony.

Yes, some may think it's old fashioned, but it's respectful; their building, their courtesy.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/08/2024 20:57

I think it would be fine for a destination wedding on a beach somewhere hot (obviously you’d need the right shoes for that)

You definitely couldn’t wear it to a church wedding! But even for a non religious wedding I think it would be too much skin for a wedding - and the shoulders would mean you couldn’t put something over it for the church bit

Some wedding dresses are backless so why are they appropriate in a church but a guests dress isn't?

Only reached page 1 - the comments are weird!
Are you meant to deliberately dress down and dull at a wedding ffs 😂

Crazycatlady79 · 19/08/2024 20:45

It's perfect!
I'd accessorise with a summer weight jacket for the service/day part of the wedding, but throw that to one side come the evening.

@exprecis Ah yes, I know where a belly button is but I assumed the slash was a split in the skirt. I now see it was the top that had the slash, makes more sense

YellowphantGrey · 19/08/2024 19:27

Prawncow · 19/08/2024 13:51

From the neck down!

Slashed from the neck to navel and you think that includes the vagina?!

Sweet jesus.

YellowphantGrey · 19/08/2024 19:25

Dotto · 19/08/2024 13:52

This is a rather obtuse reply. Nobody I know would wear this to a wedding in my circles as it would look utterly ridiculous. Different circles obviously.

But you still said your social circle, including you, would actively laugh at someone in that dress.

Why? Do you honestly think you are a better person than the person wearing that dress?

It says more about you than the person wearing it.

It must be awfully insecure to be you that you have actively degrade other women and their clothing choices.

Boopbeepbeepboop · 19/08/2024 15:04

I feel like the back of the dress is just weird generally, somehow doesn't match how elegant it otherwise looks.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 19/08/2024 15:01

Such a lovely amount of judgement on here
"Not demure"
"Showing off"
"Look at me"
"Too much flesh"
"Attention seeking"
"Too revealing"

It's gross

Didimum · 19/08/2024 14:44

With the sleeves, the colour and the back, I do think it's just on the wrong side of an attention dress – if it just had two of any of those three elements, then I think fine, but all three is a bit much. I say this on what I personally think about when choosing wedding outfits. On the other hand if someone had worn this at my wedding I wouldn't have thought anything negative whatsoever, so I'm not sure it really matters!

neverbeenskiing · 19/08/2024 14:20

Crunchymum · 19/08/2024 13:53

Well the wedding isn't until next year, so it's not as though she's bothering the bride the day before the wedding.

And depending in who the bride is to the OP (IE a friend or close relative) then I see no issue at all with asking. Although I certainly wouldn't ask the bride or bridesmaids if I didn't know know them well.

Surely it's the best way to know if the dress is suitable or not?

I suppose I'm struggling with the idea that OP, a grown woman, needs the Bride to sign off on her choice of dress. She's not actually in the wedding party, she's a guest, so whether or not the Bride likes her dress is irrelevant.

Wanderinghome · 19/08/2024 14:11

I think its a beautiful dress and wouldn't have had an issue with it being worn at my wedding.

Megifer · 19/08/2024 14:07

Dotto · 19/08/2024 11:45

Different circles then... Only OP knows her own circles. In mine a guest wearing that would be laughed at.

I'm sure ops circle isn't one that consists of 10 year olds.

Ginmonkeyagain · 19/08/2024 14:03

I suppose the other question OP is would YOU feel comfortable with your whole back exposed and not wearing a bra? If yes go for it. If you are going to spend the whole day worrying about whether those ties are secure enough or that you are going to have a Janet Jackson style wardrobe malfunction during Come On Eileen, then you will have a miserable time.

The colour and length lovely so if you like that, maybe search out something similar but without the exposed back detail.

exprecis · 19/08/2024 13:58

I think a lot of people would find it difficult to say that they thought a dress was too revealing.

You already see lots of posts on this thread suggesting that anyone who thinks that is a bitter jealous hag from 1940.

I think you would worry that the asker was going to think the same

Grannyinnwaiting · 19/08/2024 13:57

I don't like the colour I'm afraid though it's a matter of taste. Like many other posters Unfortunately I also think the back is too much, especially combined with the colour - the overall effect is shouting LOOK AT MEEEE. If you wear it I think half the guests like half the posters here will be thinking you're trying to compete with the wedding party. Sorry!

Garman · 19/08/2024 13:56

This would be fine for a wedding where I am in Ireland, from reading mumsnet UK wedding guest outfits are a lot more afternoon style/casual/less celebratory/dull whichever phrase you want yourself.

Crunchymum · 19/08/2024 13:53

neverbeenskiing · 19/08/2024 13:49

Do people actually do this? It would never occur to me to ask the Bride for her 'take' on what I was planning to wear to a wedding. When I got married the last thing on my mind was what other people were wearing, unless OP turns up in a white dress and a veil no reasonable Bride would care.

@Dotto I would hate to mix in "your circles". Laughing at another's clothing?!? My god, are you and your friends 12?!? How cruel and immature. Do you also throw stones at pigeons?!?

Slashed open to the navel? That would mean their vag was on show. I highly doubt anyone thought that was appropriate

From the neck down!

Crunchymum · 19/08/2024 10:48

Can you ask the bride / a bridesmaid? Get their take on it.
