Neighbours on holiday and left dog in house

And the poor bloody animal has been crying and barking for 24 hours. She has the occasional rest but it’s pretty much constant other than that. They have form for this: worst before this recent episode was leaving the poor dog crying for 12 hours straight when they went out one time. That wasn’t the only time but was previously the worst.

They were reported and notified so they know their dog has separation anxiety. Yet this morning in the early hours the entire family fucks off on holiday - must be a holiday as they all had suitcases - and since they left, that poor dog has been crying.

Someone came in for around twenty minutes earlier today to let the dog in the garden and presumably to feed her. But then they fucked off and since then just non stop crying interspersed with barking. it’s honestly NOT annoying me - it’s making me feel so sad for the dog.

Given they had suitcases this has got to be for at least a week, I know the dog will be fed and let out for twenty minutes a day but it’s so clearly in distress! What would you do? Anything?

I wonder if the neighbour who’s been feeding the dog was supposed to have him/her at her house but has decided to just leave it there and go in instead perhaps but now that it’s been raised that dog is crying they’ve taken him/her to her house, cause the alternative of an owner thinking this is ok to leave a dog alone is utter madness .

Crazy isn't it. When I'm away I have someone going in a couple of times a day for the cats but doggo comes with us if UK and stays with a family member otherwise. Can't fathom leaving her alone.

good result

RSPCA can't do anything.

Another update because I know people will be worried (which goes some way to restore my faith in human nature).

Since the conversation between neighbour and the one ‘looking after’ the dog, there hasn’t been a peep. Not one sound coming from that flat. I can only surmise as I didn't actually see, but I think either a family member has come to take the dog, or the neighbour calling in to feed her has taken her home. The neighbour who spoke up is a goddess in my eyes because she knows these people far better than I do and was clearly as affected as I was.

On a tangent, but this has also shown to me how different neighbour dynamics and communication can be. I live near these neighbours and yet don’t really know any of them so was very unsure of what to do; but one of their other neighbours (who actually lives next door) was able to raise this diplomatically and it seems to have been resolved.

Again, thank you to everyone who responded. It was so helpful to know that others out there care. Except of course for the POS who went on holiday and left her cat to fend for itself. There’s a special place in hell for you.

@DonnaBanana They may "come from nature" but they've been raised in sodding CAPTIVITY with absolutely zero experience or knowledge of how to catch their own food, find shelter - nothing. They're not objects they're living souls with feelings of abandonment and hurt, not to mention outright fear for fuck’s sake. Please do the right thing and rehome that poor animal.

Un fucking believable

HauntedbyMagpies · 20/08/2024 02:51

@DonnaBanana You should be banned from keeping animals 🤬 "Animals adapt" not from bloody NEGLECT they don't!

Why do these people always have a cliched saying to justify their abhorrent actions?!

Taluulaah · 20/08/2024 02:22

Please OP, please contact someone about this. PP may be right in that nothing can or will be done about it, but at least you will have tried. Leaving a dog alone for that length of time, even with someone popping in for the odd twenty minute interval, is not acceptable, especially if the poor dog has such pronounced separation anxiety which clearly it does. A neighbour of mine used to leave their dog during the day for long periods and it would howl and cry constantly - They returned each evening, so I could soeak to them about it, let them know how distressed their pet was, even offered to help by checking in on it or walking it, but I would’ve without doubt contacted the RSPCA had they left the dog for days on end in that state. I truly hope you do take action and don’t leave that poor animal in such distress 😔

RogueFemale · 20/08/2024 02:13

If the dog is only being let out once a day, the owners are going to return to a house full of dog shit.

Also @DonnaBanana no, it's not okay to leave your cat outside for a week, ffs.

DonnaBanana · 19/08/2024 09:38

I just went away for a week and left my cat outside. Came back he’s happy as Larry. Animals can adapt if you let them after all they come from nature.

So who was feeding the poor cat

Mama2many73 · 20/08/2024 01:44

Just read your post and a few messages and I really feel sick and very emotional. That poor dog!! How the fuck can they do that??

Cantbelievethatimafoolagain · 20/08/2024 01:37

I feel sick just reading this. My dog has separation anxiety and we can hardly leave him. He'd be so distressed and turning the house upside down. Someone checking up on the dog once or twice a day is not enough! They need mental stimulation, walks etc. That person checking the dog is obviously not a proper dog sitter.

twojumps · 20/08/2024 01:01

Over 140 messages in and people still suggesting call the RSPCA. Don't you think the previous 140 messages have already done that?

Wonder if anyone else will post suggesting it

KendraTheVampyreSlayer · 20/08/2024 00:44

My god! I can't understand people who do this! How can anyone be so cruel to leave a poor dog alone like that? I wouldn't go anywhere unless I knew my beloved pooch was being looked after. Really hope you can get some help for the poor thing. 😢

I wish there had been a trigger warning; this is extremely distressing.

The thread title wasn't enough of a warning for you??

You want a "trigger warning" too?

Copperoliverbear · 19/08/2024 23:57

Please call the rspca, this dog isn't well cared for it has been left virtually alone and is never walked, not socialised with other dogs, that is not well cared for

Please call the rspca or police.
I'm heartbroken for the poor thing, he deserves a better life

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 19/08/2024 23:11

@Grammarnut
I'm not sure that you know any more about caring for a dog than the OP's neighbours . Do you really think that the way to end separation anxiety in a dog is to leave it pretty much alone for a week? And as for OP's neighbours not being able to afford dog boarding when on their holiday - if that's the case they either shouldn't have a dog or shouldn't go on holiday . And a good kennels will let dogs have a good run around in a field a couple of times a day, and will be regularly checked and given human interaction as well as feeding.

YourElatedLimeShark · 19/08/2024 22:30

I work with dogs. I explicitly refuse to tend to dogs who are left alone overnight. We tell clients it’s due to insurance. But actually it’s because it’s immoral.

My neighbour did this. By his own choosing, the cat now lives with us.

KhakiShaker · 19/08/2024 22:09

Grammarnut · 19/08/2024 21:35

Oh dear. Yes, my DD obviously care more about her dog. But she is very well-off and can pay a dogwalker several times a week and for her to board the dog if they go away i.e. for 2 weeks.
Perhaps the neighbours cannot afford this. And the dog won't be in its own poo. If it's taken out after being fed then it will have a motion. Are you sure the carer only comes once a day btw?

If the owners can’t afford proper care for the dog then they shouldn’t own one! Someone popping in 20 mins a day (or even twice a day) is NOT proper care for any dog.

When we go away our dog has a live-in sitter. £40 per day. Budgeted into the cost of owning a dog.

and for the person saying they left their cat outside for a week, you must be a troll. I can’t believe anyone would actually admit to doing that and not be ashamed.

Grammarnut · 19/08/2024 21:35

SummerSplashing · 19/08/2024 13:17

@Grammarnut

Dont be ridiculous, of course the neighbours are being cruel.

no dog would be happy being shut in (with its own shit) while the owners go on holiday, being fed once a day & company for 20 minutes.

Even your daughter has more sense.

not all cockapoos are highly strung & anxious either.

Grammarnut · 19/08/2024 21:31

WiddlinDiddlin · 19/08/2024 11:33

In kennels, she'd not be forced to toilet indoors - she'd have some sort of company on and off through the day - she'd almost certainly get a run around or a walk - she'd be fed twice a day - the kennel run area would be cleaned several times a day.

I don't know how you can say her owners are not being cruel - the dog is in distress and they have caused this by leaving her with insufficient/inappropriate care.

That is cruel - whether its because they genuinely don't know, whether she's in kennels or not, isn't relevant. By their action or lack of action they're causing unecessary suffering.

But she is not abandoned. Someone is looking after her. You may think it is inappropriate. Maybe the owners do not - or are trying to end separation anxiety. Why not offer to have the dog for them since you are so upset. Certainly tell them she was howling all day, when they return.

Grammarnut · 19/08/2024 21:30

Starlight1979 · 19/08/2024 12:25

This is the equivalent of those shit dog owners who leave their dog home alone / in a crate for 8-9 hours a day and claim that they're "fine". Guess it helps to ease their guilty conscience.

A cat should not be left to fend for itself. It should have access to shelter and someone coming in with food and to clear litter trays. Honestly!

Maddy70 · 19/08/2024 17:54

They havent abandoned ot. They have a dog walker feeder coming in

I would speak with them and tell them its howling all day

The rspca wont be interested as it ia being looked after albeit struggling with the separation

You could offer to have it overnight?

HamBagelNoCheese · 19/08/2024 17:50

HoneyLimesBlossom · 19/08/2024 12:49

@HamBagelNoCheese well please don’t take ‘offence’ but BUGGER off then! People like me and my types of helpers and darling doggies haven’t got time for time wasters like you Barbara.

Ah OK, you've over egged the pudding now. Less try-hard next time. 8/10 for effort, 2/10 for execution.
