Really weird stuff people do that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Someone I know puts hotel TV remotes in plastic bags before using them, because she once heard a standup comedian talking about men wanking on them while watching porn.

WTAF?

What weird things do people you know do that make absolutely no sense at all? Anything as odd as that?

My bit of weirdness? While my DH gets my birthday or Christmas presents ready, I like to be blindfolded and in the room. That's because I love hearing the sound of my presents being wrapped. It comes from childhood excitement of once being blindfolded and led to something too big to wrap (a bike), and also that I didn't like being banished from the room while my smaller presents were wrapped.

As many of the "weirdnesses" on this thread are about saving pennies here and there, I guess it's one way that frugal people can save on wrapping paper: blindfold the recipient, instead of wrapping the presents. I've even seen this method listed on web pages about "how to use less wrapping paper".

Like I said, I have yet to become ill as a result of flushing the toilet and I'm pretty sure I come into contact with just as many poo germs serving the general public in a supermarket. I'm not afraid of germs.

Yeah, I can't be arsed worrying about that either.

Freinds mum used to wash the dishes etc in dishwashing liquid then wash clothing in the greasy old water. Sometimes they washed the dishes in laundry detergent then the clothes.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 18/08/2024 19:13

No, that is disgusting. There was a TV programme a while back where they tested make-up brushes and toothbrushes in bathrooms. They all had poo particles in them because the flush projects the poo and urine up to six feet! Happy with poo in your toothbrush? Put the seat down!

Inseminating a cow then drinking milk that they produce for their calf's. Makes no sense when you think about it!

OldSchoolCasualty · 18/08/2024 19:18

my ex's Nan would turn EVERYTHING off at the plug before she left the house or went to bed, everything except the fridge and freezer (because we trust them).
He lived with her for a while so he did it to, so when we house sat for my parents while they were away he unplugged the sky box so nothing recorded. They weren't best pleased!

Re kettles

..THIS MAY BE TMI.....IN WHICH CASE I'D ADVISE NOT TO READ IT

When we were in sixth form at school
......we used the kettle in our lunch room every day....filling it up by the spout as we were too lazy to remove the lid.

Until one day someone opened the lid and there was a used tampon in it! I still rem the name of the girl who purportedly did this!

Since then I have never ever used a kettle in a hotel room.

That is grim. Actually made me heave 🤢

Turning electrical gadgets off rather than leave on standby- advised by brother, fire-fighter. He said he’s been called out to fires started by items left on standby.

Same. Parent who was a fire fighter. Said microwaves and tv’s were one of the main causes of night fires.

@Changingplace Instead she has a carrier bag hooked over a cupboard handle, fills it and then takes it to the bin, why that’s preferable to having even a small bin is beyond me.

I used to do this because my kitchen was so small I had no space for a bin. I actually preferred it, meant I didn't have to occasionally wash a bin.

Yeah if there was a logical reason I could understand it but they have a big new nice kitchen, why a bin wasn’t factored in is beyond me & there’s space for one.

Why would it?

How on earth do you hold your knife?

I worked in a hotel and now I wipe hotel remotes with an antibac wipe because of what I’ve seen 🤢

I used to pre-dilute squash and leave it in the fridge because my kids thought 50/50 squash to water ratios were reasonable and would go through a bottle in two days left to their own devices. They'd drink it made up all right though.
As for hotel remotes - does nobody wash their hands?
Sometimes I think people are so obsessed with germs that it must restrict their lives. Do they wear plastic gloves on public transport to avoid touching rails that might have been touched by someone who'd recently had a wank - or do they do the sensible thing of just washing their hands?
But then, I flush the loo with the seat up and have yet to catch anything (or even be ill as a result). I do wonder about people who complain about how 'rank' it is and how they always put the seat down. I don't go for a shit every time I sit on the loo, and refuse to worry about 'shit particles' flying around my bathroom!

That makes sense, I guess. Looks ugly though. It is also the soaking dishes in the basin in soapy water and then barely rinsing them to put them on the drying rack with sudsy water still dripping down.

That may just be my MIL 😂

It possibly is! During the wonderful 1970s, with all the strikes and powercuts we had limited energy. I remember we had to wash up in about an inch of tepid water, but then my Mum would boil up a kettle to pour over the sudsy plates. Happy days.

BebbanburgIsMine · 18/08/2024 19:07

@Changingplace

I don't have a kitchen bin, my kitchen is too small for one, even a small one.

I hook a carrier bag over the door handle, then take it out to the communal bin when it's full.

Maybe she means she cuts with the blunt side.

I think the plastic basin in the sink was to protect the plates from getting broken when sinks were made of that enamel.

Not answering doorbells. Not answering phones if they cannot recognise the number and proud to tell everyone about it.

I've always thought the UK practice of handwashing dishes in a basin in a sink to be a bit odd, when we have running water coming out of taps. I appreciate most people use dishwashers these days but I still get the basin in UK Air BnBs.

I think it comes from the times when people had one tank of hot water to do for the whole day. They (like I do now, because I wash up in a kettle of hot water) didn't have limitless hot running water to wash dishes. Hot water was (is!) expensive, and washing dishes under running hot water is a luxury.

My microwave doesn't have a clock.

Mine doesn't either. I switch it off at the plug after every use.

BobbyBiscuits · 18/08/2024 18:52

@Wendysfriend lol. She's not that bad. She does use the handle! Nah...she's 'armless 🤣
