Someone I know puts hotel TV remotes in plastic bags before using them, because she once heard a standup comedian talking about men wanking on them while watching porn.

WTAF?

What weird things do people you know do that make absolutely no sense at all? Anything as odd as that?

Washing raw meat. Very odd

That's an orthodox jewish requirement to ensure they don't eat blood.

My grand mother during a thunder storm would close all the curtains, put all cutlery away, cover the mirror with towels and sit in the middle of the room. Not at the same time but my mother always peeled mushrooms. I’ve no idea why

Oh yes, I'm a mushroom peeler too! Gets rid of all the soiley bits without having to get them all soggy when cleaning in water. Far better!

My mum switches the oven off at the wall - the big red switch that switches the electric supply to the oven.

In her defence, it relates to something from decades ago and she knows it’s superfluous, but she still does it.

We have always done this, its just way easier and means the kids/pets/anything else can't accidentally turn it on.

JaneJeffer · 18/08/2024 19:48

@PuggyPuggyPuggy I'm not in the U.K. and here it would be bad manners to sit a mile away from the only other person and we don't think anyone we don't know is going to accost us in broad daylight Grin

Can someone please help me out with this ..

re people turning off all switches such as microwave, tv and so on..

how do you feel about the fridge/freezer that’s switched on? Am I missing something.

I don't turn things off from a safety point of view so am unbothered by the fridge being left on. I do it because the oven and microwave switches have little red lights that are very visible if you go into the kitchen at night and, for some reason, I feel it's 'tidier' with them off! Weird, I know. Besides, I can just peep in and see those lights are off and know that I haven't inadvertently left a ring on or the oven or grill on.

As Michael McIntyre says we trust the fridge

People do weird shit all the time!
like
living in cities
eating bananas
wearing court shoes
going on any kind of holiday with evening‘entertainment’
but that’s just IMO, we’re all different and so is our definition of weird.

Obviously "weird" does not apply to you in your circumstances. I think OP is after something a bit more off-the-wall - dare I say, light hearted.

Just explaining why people might do it. No doubt I look a right idiot with my wipes wiping down the pub table, door handles, tv remotes etc.

People have criticised others for doing it so i am providing a context why people might.

I think the squash idea is sensible! We used to make a jug of squash and leave in the fridge so people can just pour from it. Why is that weird? 😂

I do that.

No reference to a post !

Wondering what you wipe ?? 😀

Haha the remote control but I feel sad I've stopped the speculation now ;)

Guessing you never gut and fillet fish then! When you butcher meat for different cuts (especially if you’re gutting fish) you want to get rid of the blood or it will make the meat bitter.
Not necessary to wash to wash preprepared meat.

I meant meat that you buy in a package from the butcher/ supermarket! I'm not I'm the habit of slaughtering and butchering my own meat!

You can pay per view "adult" channels in most hotel rooms and rent "adult"
movies. And many still do, despite it being available on their phone/tablet. Which they can also hook up to the TV if they wish...so they can have their hands free.

Oh god, do they have no shame?

Houseshmouse · 18/08/2024 19:18

Inseminating a cow then drinking milk that they produce for their calf's. Makes no sense when you think about it!

Calves

Are you a vegan?

I wipe down everything when I go away. But that is mostly because I have a child with anaphylactic nut contact allergies and was advised to do so by his consultant. So i have wipes for tv remotes, handles, basins, airplane trays, the lot. We still go to pubs etc and I always wipe everything down.

Really? Have you ever considered that people feel alarmed by your behaviour? Anyone who gets closer to me than is neccessary, I assume is going to accost me in some way. Makes my skin crawl but if I told them to get the hell away from me, I'd be seen as the weirdo 😂

Same.

And it's always a man in my experience. If a car pulls up beside me and I'm still in mine,
I move it. I also move seats on public transport or a cafe if someone sits directly beside me (i.e on a takes up the other seat on a two seater or booth). I value my space. I might sit near another woman on a bus or train but not next to her.

PerkyMintDeer · 18/08/2024 19:33

MounjaroUser · 18/08/2024 19:29

Hang on, why would they be watching porn on a hotel TV? Surely they wouldn't be able to get onto that sort of channel and would use their phones or a laptop?

For me, it's the people who park right next to you in an otherwise empty car park/sit next to you in an otherwise empty cafe/on the seat directly beside you an otherwise empty bus or train.
That's just safety in numbers

People who drive excessively large cars when they only use their vehicle for commuting and errands (there are valid reasons for owning a larger car, such as being disabled or being a handyman character who moves lots of shit around, but these reasons do not apply to the overwhelming majority of people).
There's rarely a valid reason for owning a large car- people think it's normal to sink huge sums of money into cars, just because they think they are impressing people that they don't even like.

Some people sit in their cars with the engine running. Why? The AA and RAC have advised this damages the car's engine, and that car engines should be switched off when vehicles are stationary. So why leave the engine running?

Personalised number plates. Or people putting that stupid plane wing on the back of their car. Getting "twat" tattooed across your forehead would achieve the same thing.

Lying sprawled out on the grass, or on a beach, on hot days. This quite literally serves no purpose. It is something that people only do because they have seen other people doing it.

Men taking photographs of themselves. I'm ugly. Most men are ugly. Taking a photograph of yourself doesn't change that.

The really weird duckface pouty-lip facial expression that people do in photographs. This one is disgusting.

Seeing dozens and dozens of men flocking to a woman's photographs on social media and all of them telling her how wonderful she is. Cringe.

People listening to shit and generic music in the charts just because everyone else listens to it, and they think that's what they are supposed to like. There's nothing wrong with liking different music.

ive never washed meat and also never washed any fruit or vegetable or salad item ever. Cannot see the point. Will knock soil off if there is a bit in there but to be honest supermarket stuff doesn’t tend to have much on. Also eat raw carrots without peeling them.

also find having a washing up bowl very weird. They are really small and the actual sink is perfectly adequate and designed for washing up.

Both of these things! Hands need to be thoroughly washed for 2 minutes with soap to to kill bacteria and prevent the spread of diseases, but grapes are apparently clean after being run under the cold tap for 20 seconds 🤔

And having a washing up bowl that needs to be moved out of the way or emptied every time you want to wash your hands / pour some dodgy milk down the drain etc - why are people going out and handing over money for something that causes extra faff without any benefit? It actually makes me angry when we go on holiday and there is a washing up bowl in the kitchen 😂
